lol really unmasking yourself here eh. Go look through her social media posts and you will find the mayor wearing culturally appropriate attire for a wide array of constituent groups including jewish, tamil, hindu, greek just in the last couple of months alone.

In the first part of this post you (correctly) assume I haven’t gone through her social media posts. And then the second part you imply I have done so and made that post anyways, and in doing so “taking my mask off”

Second, I find it extremely hard to believe the mayor feels compelled to dress up in “traditional” ethnic attire (especially when such attire is often compelled for women for discriminatory reasons) for everytime they host a meeting in their own office to entertain ethnic/racial grievances.

But if she does actually do this, I would say it is wildly inappropriate. But it is a democracy. So if that is what the people of Toronto want, more power to them I guess.

She is they mayor of a diverse constituency and does things that pander to them all. This week she appears to be very into Passover.

Getting mad at a political leader dressing in culture attire when meeting religious community leaders is just silly. Says WAY more about you than it does about them. And complaining about removing shoes just shows ignorance of common practices in the muslim community.

I am not sure why she needs to wear this attire in Canada ? I would be curious were this meeting occurred . If the meeting occurred in their place of worship fair enough if she chooses to so but even if she didn't fair enough. Many have referred to forcing women to dress like this as oppression and I have heard Bill Maher call it a genocidal act against women

She obviously doesn't "have to". She's showing cultural respect to leaders of a big demographic in her city.

I personally dislike all religions and the way they distort public discourse around social and political issues. I'd prefer we don't pander to Muslims, Christians, Jews, etc. but I don't find this any different than all the other iterations of it...

As an official representative of Canadian with power like a mayor that suppose to represent Canadian , which is not a theocracy yet , I actually do bother ….

She doesn't "need" to. It's just a respectful thing to do when you are meeting various religious leaders of all faiths to build community. Just as your boy Poilievre regularly does with all sorts of faith communities. But if you ONLY get upset about it when a female politician does it to muslim leaders, well pick your -ism.

Speaking respectfully with faith leaders of many different faiths isn't a bad thing. It's a good thing. A healthy, multicultural thing. That isn't a challenge to secularism.

Half an hour in, and poilievre hasn't hit the kind of knock-out punch he needs. A static debate is a win for the presumptive poll leader.

Probably several. You have never once complained when, say, Poilievre - a man - wears a yarmulke - a jewish symbol. But when Chow - a woman - wears a hijab - an islamic symbol, you through a hissy fit.

I just thought the juxtaposition of her hijabing it up, while dude rocked bare feet pretty amusing. Regardless, given demographic trends in a few election cycles the Islamists will likely have enough demographic strength to elect their own candidates, and then it will be a very moot point. Demographics is destiny.

Me personally I always felt a mistake that the bloc isn’t aiming at all francophone counties throughout Canada and never understood their small vision of not aiming at all the franco communities in this country .
They say they do care about all of them but they don’t act upon it .
But that just me ….

I agree, with two points

1. If you don't have enough candidates running in Canada to form a minority gov then what are you doing on the stage? The NDP won't get there, but at least they theoretically can. The bloc cant. They should not be in the debate.

2. I think MPs should serve the country first and constituents second, and therefore I don't really care about anything a provincial protectionist party has to say.

Kelhus you’re making the basic mistake of puttting your cultural perspectives on a different culture. In western culture, bare feet would be considered extremely casual and nobody takes off their shoes when entering public spaces, only private spaces like a house. In Islamic culture, taking off your shoes in inside places is much more common and a sign of respect and cleanliness. Just have an iota of basic cultural relativism - for once.

You don’t have to, but doing so isn’t remotely a threat to secularism. Being able to engage with faith leaders in their cultural context - which can include wearing religious clothing - is just obviously not the same as endorsing that religion from
a political office. When secularists get mad over stuff like this it just hurts secularism and makes it look inflexible and unwelcoming.
