These people choose an alcoholic media dimwit to lead the department of defense and pretends like it is business as usual when he conducts business outside sanctioned communications channels and includes friends / families in group chats where he brags about classified operations. They even support him in his supposed quest to rid the US armed forces of "unqualified hires".
I mean, I think Musk's behavior in US politics has been corrupt, undemocratic, unlawful, marred by veneration of fascist ideology and incompetent to the extreme, but I'd still be surprised if he wasn't the smartest man in most of those rooms. The bar can't be that high.
