today's worst scores
82: Philip Barbaree, Jr.
79: Adam Scott, Ryan Gerard
78: Sam Burns
Casual water is determined by taking your normal stance. This is crucial because most people put as much pressure on the foot as possible trying to draw water. So to get relief you’d simply stand next to the ball as well as where your stance will be. If water breaks the surface you get relief, otherwise no. That video means nothing for various reasons. USGA officials are
Yes I'm sure they enforced the rule right. But the rule itself might need a tweak. In that situation, or others, with the lie on a downslope up against the cut, the ball could actually be submerged while in the fairway and feet drawing no water. I predict that rule will be tweaked. Long shot, but seems it would be just.
One of the alltime great midcollapse corrections in any sport, along with Leonard-Hearns I, Pats-Falcons SB, and Alcaraz at French recently.
Spaun had circled & squared the drain, and based on how shook & scared he looked at the end of the Players I dismissed him pretourney as not having the minerals for a major but he pulled out the bowling balls after the rain delay, which helped him like the Cubs in 2016.
Huge props.

Well, I'm a big fan of fitting teams/players into slots and using it for its hugely predictive power, but I'm not sure I get all that. You do, that's what counts. I saw Hearns/Leonard I live. How does it go in that slot and how do the Pats/Falcons fit into it? What exactly is a midcollapse correction? (BTW, I'm playing some Billie Eilish on piano as a beginner. Pretty songs.)
Props to Spaun. Could have just folded it up after those first six holes, particularly with that bad break on #2. Rain break maybe saved him a bit, came back with a vengeance.
Entertaining day. However I'll be the negative nancy in the room and say I am a bit disappointed it was Spaun who emerged from the pack at the end instead of Scott, Vik, or any of big dogs chasing. Ya ya, he won by 2 and was the lone man under par at the most difficult course on the planet, it still felt like everyone else lost it. But they're all playing the same course and he shot the best score over 72.
Think this will rank up there with the most random of 1-off major winners.
Spaun with 4 birdies on the back nine. Shot 32. Under brutal conditions with all kinds of players backing up. No fluke. In the playoff at the Players where he struggled on Sunday. Learning curve. Gutsy.

You get relief from lie and stance, ball counts as well. Therefore water did not come up when he stepped normally in the area where his ball was as well as his intended stance.
At age 35 (one year older than Shaun Micheel was), Spaun’s certainly playing the best golf if his career and he’ll be in all the big tournaments for the next five years so we’ll see. He’s definitely shown resilience.
This win was pretty similar to Geoff Ogilvy’s though the collapses yesterday weren’t nearly as extreme and that leaderboard was MUCH stronger, and none of Ogilvy Micheel or Harman are great comps for him.
Actually, Y E Yang might be the closest comp.

USGA officials are tough
All I saw were commercials from the USGA that they ensure that everything is fair across all levels of golf. If its not casual water at the US Open than its not casual water at the PGA or your local course. I bet every golfer here would have taken relief and not thought twice.
I still think the rules officials blew it
The ruling is the ruling. Burns isn't the only player to hit from that area after the weather delay.
poor Tommy lad
he folded like a cheap British suit in a chilly London rain down the stretch
he ain't ever gonna bag one in the States, is he?

i was not watching as it happened live
but so easy to imagine the result after your post
as we click the years more toward getting older
it becomes easier to recognize tomorrow the wood is fleeting
A+ RED
losing to Keegan on his home course only adds extra cry sauce to the eye holes
Fleetwood gonna win the British open.
don't see how Keegan can keep himself off his RC team
currently the fifth ranked USA#1 DG golfer
Was a pretty brutal sequence of events for Tommy Lad. Not only does he misclub the approach, hits an average bump and run to give Keegan the exact line and then his putt hits a mark and diverts (I am a little suspect whether his putt would have gone in anyways but whatever). Almost comical now that he doesn't have a win.
Hard to see Keegan not being on the squad given current form.

Crazy ZJ was so terrible and they tried to make it up to Keegan by naming him Captain . Now he's going to earn his way on the team and have to make a tough decision. At this point name Phil or Tiger captain and make Keegan playing assistant.
not sure if either of these guys will ever make a putt (Greyserman v Potgieter playoff)
Rosie has been complete ass since the masters yet his round today makes me think he has a shot at the open
Thriston Lawrence is 200-1 to win The Open Championship, 25-1 to top 5, 10-1 to top 10.
He finished 2nd last year playing well in the final group, he finished T12 at the U.S. Open, he's had multiple good finishes in Europe over the last year. He just doesn't play well on a typical PGA Tour setup it seems.
IMO, his odds are way, way out of line. U.S. books tend to undervalue European players in majors.
Patrick Reed at 80-1 is a little enticing as well.
