I explained to you the undeniable statistically provable benefit immigration has on the US just yesterday and today you are calling abject racist nonsense "common sense"

You made some good points and I think Charlie makes good points. I agree with him we need to be more careful who we let into this country. There are a lot of loopholes and scams.

Who let you in?

So this Charlie Kirk guy thinks both NYC, and the country, are ruined? Maybe he should be moving to another country himself, like all the right wing smartasses like to say when I say anything negative about the US.

addendum: I like Charlie Kirk.

Least surprising thing I've ever read.

I'm truly devastated that you didn't like my post.

"Love it or leave it" doesn't make much sense. If you truly love your country, you would want to stay and try to make it better, not leave it.

On the 'other side', I think Rosie O'Donnell is the only celeb to actually follow through on her threat to leave the country if Trump won.

It will take some time, but I'm confident you'll eventually get over it.

It's another way of saying, "**** you, I got mine." People can't afford housing, health care, or children. Being poor is criminalized and a literal death sentence for your family. No one can afford the minimum $350,000 to leave.

No chance you could take her back?

We should take her back. Restaurants need her business.

Speaking from a general viewpoint, not New York specifically, rent control is a notoriously tough policy to pull off. It has a tendency to turn into a black market, where people pay substantial amounts under the table to get the contract. At the other end of the scale, unchecked markets also tends to very little to alleviate rent crises / housing crises, as the market unchecked

I will say I am going to be very disappointed if Momdani doesn't win the general election or if he does win and nothing happens. I want the full socialist experiment:

Rent control
Wealth taxes
Govt supermarkets
Defund police
Ban all federal law enforcement
Israel divestment
Increased public school "equity"
$30 minimum wage
Free puberty blockers for kids

--Give me all of it.

Rent control has been tried a lot of times in many places. Under the proposals by Momdani it's not even a complete rent control (ie there is no complete cap on all new leases) . It's "only" about the approx 1M units that are "rent stabilized" already, and it just reverts back to pre-Adams rules. Instead of very small increases being allowed every year, you sometimes get a freeze in some years.

Basically it's baddish but it's not as bad as the rent control that we saw in many other places across the world and it doesn't destroy incentives to build new housing (when regulations permit it) and so on. It won't devastate the city at all, it's a minor element in the grand scheme of things even if it passes as proposed by Momdani.

I am VERY much more interested about city managed supermarkets (i expect grotesque ****ups and money to be bled significantly in the effort, with automatic failure) . That will be fun to watch. Won't destroy the city either though.

Now the $30 minwage... if actually implemented without a plethora of exceptions, grandfathering of existing workplace conditions, long delays and so on (ie, if they actually implement it, not if they claim to implement it and then the next mayor can delete it)... that would be truly destructive. And i think we need that real life example to show leftists everywhere you can't magically make all jobs pay "a living wage".

I would be truly shocked if Mamdani did not win the general election. Adams is closely associated with Trump and corruption. Sliwa is an unserious placeholder who is the GOP candidate in the general only because no serious person wanted to go to the trouble of running as the Republican nominee.

What measures are in place to stop people from selling their now rent-controlled lease at a massive markup on Craigslist?

Do NYC crime families exist anymore? Is there about to be a pineapple black market now with government-subsidized grocery stores?

The neighborhood level results for the Democratic mayoral primary are interesting. Just based on a quick scan, several things jumped out at me.

First, neighborhoods that are perceived as cool went overwhelmingly to Mamdani, and generally speaking, the neighborhoods that are perceived as the most cool went the most overwhelmingly to Mamdani. And by overwhelmingly, I mean as much as +70 for Mamdani.

Second, neighborhoods that are perceived as first or second generation white immigrant neighborhoods (mostly Russian or Eastern European) went mostly to Cuomo, though not as overwhelmingly as the cool neighborhoods went to Mamdani. Diitto for neighborhoods that are perceived as working class black or Latino neighborhoods.

Third, Cuomo didn't do nearly as well in the older, wealthier neighborhoods as he probably expected to do. For example, he was +16 on the Upper East Side and +13 in Tribeca.

There is still organized crime in New York, of course, just as there is in any major city, but the old Italian crime families that you saw in the movies are not nearly as influential as they used to be.

As to your first question, if you get caught sub-letting your rent controlled apartment, I'm pretty sure that you can lose your rent controlled status. That's a pretty big penalty. And the risk isn't trivial. If you rent to some jackass who is bothering other tenants in your building, they have a decent incentive to drop a dime on you.

Historically, the more savvy play was to keep the apartment and then let your kid live in it rent free. I think there has been a crackdown on that practice as well, but it certainly was less risky than subletting to a stranger at massive markup.

by Luciom

It's probably a decent bet. I would put Mamdani's true odds at something like 85-90%.

Charlie Kirk is most known for his incredibly weird and off-putting face which features a massive five-head and one of the gummiest smiles you'll ever see. He's second-most known for his racism.

by geezerchess

Gorgo showing us how dumb Charlie Kirk is with a quip that truly is dumb.

I'm certainly no expert on physics, but I suspect that nobody could light a lightbulb with their brainpower.

Jesus H. Christ, it's like you've never heard of the concept of figurative language and figures of speech. Did they not teach language skills on the replica of Noah's Ark that I assume was your high school?

Of course "nothing will happen". He's gonna be mayor. Mayors don't have that kind of power. NYC will look roughly the same after he's done as it does now, book it.

You'd think Ins0 would know this, seeing as how it's his whole job.

The mayor has a fair bit of power, but you are correct that it is far from unlimited power. The real reason why things will look "roughly" the same is because Mamdani can't magic the city budget.

Nah, he's an apartment sub-manager for a slumlord or some ****.

What about minwage setting powers? Can the mayor decide that alone?

One of the things that is apparent to me from years and years in this forum is that many people here consume a lot more opinion stuff than I do. I read the news and long form journalism, but I have little or no interest in Rachel Maddow or some jackass on Fox interpreting the daily news for me. I feel like I can do that on my own.

by Luciom

I am not an expert on the division of power between the city council and the mayor's office, but I would be shocked if the answer is yes. Generally speaking, the relationship between the city council and the mayor's office is akin to the relationship between Congress and the president.

I consume a lot of right wing opinion media because the messaging is the pulse of the right wing machine

I’m fairly certain I understand the right wing ecosystem significantly better than any right wing poster outside of maybe luciom
