There are better places to hike around here and it's not a hiking area. As I explained, it's just a spot where I sometimes go to smoke weed and not be bothered by people when I'm not really able to go anywhere else.

Except you got bothered by people and immediately came to blog about the Karen instead of considering that maybe she had a point.

I got a covid dog and I wanted him to be an off leash wonder dog who went on endless adventures with me and it’s not really viable. I also live an hour from the closest metro and about 15 minutes to the start of mountains which sounds significantly more rural than you

It just always fascinates me how self-centered people get. "Why would anyone be out in the woods where I enjoy going?"

She didn't have a point. She had to walk several minutes and cross two locked gates just to find me to complain that she had seen my dog chase a deer for what had to have a very short amount of time as she was only gone for 30 seconds maybe a minute tops but I don't think even that long.

How could she have a point there? What is her point even?

I'm also about an hour from the closest metro.

I do know her point since I talked to her: which is basically that wildlife should be free to exist without being harassed or chased by dogs. (Not to mention an estimated 100 wolves now in parts of California further north)

But that's just insane. There are whole packs of coyotes out here, mountain lions, and bobcats that prey on small mammals. And deer get hit by cars all of the time.

The lady wants to live in a Disney movie but that's not reality.

Her point was that you should have your dog leashed unless specifically in off leash areas

I doubt your dog is trained perfectly. And maybe hes trained good enough for you, but once you start throwing variables in the mix you (should) realize hes not trained well enough for everyone else

Yeah, she expects you to behave like a functional adult and that ain't happening anytime soon.

My concern isn't satisfying the needs of everyone else-- that isn't realistic as some people have unrealistic demands.

And no my dog isn't trained perfectly I suppose if she were I could have her not chase a deer or I could use a shock collar and shock her once she starts after one.

The nearest designated off leash area to me might be an hour away in an actual city that has a dog park. I don't know where it would be. Probably in Poway

Functional adults don't track people down in the woods to complain that a deer was chased by a dog-- that's what insane people do.

Suppose the dog kills a dozen squirrels, five cats and a deer. Isn't that how it's supposed to work?

Its not about "satisfying the needs of everyone else"....

Its that most people have the same lack of respect for their surroundings that you do and will have their poorly behaved dog off leash where it shouldn't be and then your dog will get mauled.

Or your dog might get shot by a biker because your dog approached him

Or an "insane" lady might harm your dog because its chasing deer

How I have given any indication that I have a lack of respect for my surroundings?

I'm not littering and I will pick up trash left by other people or blown by the wind in lots of situations when I come across it.

There is a popular swimming spot near me that gets lots of kids and gets pretty trashy and we went with trash bags and cleaned it up.

Not saying I go to that extent regularly because I don't but I've also cleaned up the vacant lot behind me regularly and do pick up random trash regularly when outside. So definitely **** off with the "you lack respect for your surroundings" bullshit.

To address your other points here: my concern is giving my dog the best quality of life possible-- and I think I do a good job of that largely because I walk her a ton and take her to places where she is able to run free but that also means having to take some risks that come with that. She is trained against rattlesnakes but still one might get her. I've never come across a mountain lion and don't want to but those are out here, etc.

She is very well acquainted with mountain bikers though and pretty much just ignores them and doesn't treat them as things with humans on them but rather as inanimate objects which is nice-- as a younger puppy she'd chase them but that has stopped. But this is California mountain bikers aren't carrying guns.

As for other dogs, she runs from aggressive dogs and any dog big enough to hurt her she would be faster than.

Yeah and I'm being overly aggressive with you by saying you don't respect your surroundings.

In this one instance you seem to think that the rules shouldn't apply to you because your doggo is your baby and I understand that perspective

But I've also seen what its like when a handful of people have that same perspective all in the same place

I've seen it too. Don't forget that I've spent extensive amounts of time in rural Colombia. All the dogs just run free. Leash laws don't exist.

Even in the cities-- I once stayed at an Airbnb near the airport in Bogotá that had an aggressive bulldog right out in front off and the owners were like "be careful with that dog it's bitten like 50 people". If you get bit by a dog there it isn't the dog's fault it's your fault. I'm not saying that is the ideal approach but the attitudes there with dogs are very different than they are in the US.

But in rural Colombia they do just run free-- both personal dogs with owners and street dogs. The vast majority are friendly but I've come across unleashed dogs while walking that want to protect their properties, and you have to know how to deal with them.

The best dogs are the random hiker dogs that will follow on a trail or up a mountain. I've had this happen multiple times where I'm hiking and some dog will just follow me. I honestly think they know that these gringos are probably going someplace cool like a waterfall and they just want to tag along.

I remember hiking up this mountain and had a dog tag along and then I went back a couple days later to do the same hike and there were some people coming down with the same dog that had tagged along with me and I was like "hey I know this dog" and they were like "yeah it's not ours it's just followed us the whole way". And I get that that's not the US-- there isn't some extensive network on dirt roads that are relatively safe for dogs-- roads are paved and cars drive fast. And then it's also filled with Karens, ninnies, and problematic people.

I'll give it some consideration. In the meantime, understand that people don't like random dogs rushing up on them and then hearing some reetard standing next to a sign that reads: "keep your dog on a leash" say, "Oh, it's okay - she's friendly and just wants to say hello."
