Talk About Movies: Part 4

I thought Longlegs was great, except for Cage...I love Cage, but his portrayal was so over the top crazy, that it just seemed like - "hey! There he is! Get him!" lol.

When Harry Met Sally - It's been years since I revisited this one and I fall in love with Meg Ryan all over again every viewing. Billy Crystal makes it look so effortless. The supporting cast is aces: Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher are magic together and are the PERFECT sidekick to our main characters. There's a bit where they talk about playing it cool and how they won't make their move until AFTER the double date. They call a cab and both RUN and jump into the cab together and take off. It's such a funny gag. Highly recommend a rewatch if it's been a while, it's aged gracefully.

sunshine was amazing, one of the best scifi films in recent times

but the third act was a very different movie as it began blending genres

I love this movie, and I've taught a special topics in film course on Romantic Comedy. Harry marks a return to more conventional rom-coms after what some call "nervous comedies," such as Annie Hall.

The cab scene in Harry is one of the alltime great old-fashioned misdirection bits you can see coming a mile away but are still hilarious. Lost art.

Also a starter on The Movies That Don’t Need A Single Thing Changed team.

I noticed a handful of techniques and human things that will be forgotten in time. The multiple POV phone call conversation, where Harry calls his buddy, and Sally calls her friend. They're next to each other in bed, carrying the same conversation. It's a well orchestrated scene and beautifully cut. There's a moment where Carrie Fisher pulls a freakin rolodex out of her purse to give Sally a phone number. We don't call each other anymore. It's instant messages/text messages.

Bring Her Back (2025)
Two step siblings are put into foster care only to discover a grim secret regarding their new carer in this bleak and rather gruesome in parts Aussie Horror.
From the makers of Talk to Me (2022). which I liked, BHB is still a marked improvement, although it wouldn't be for everyone. The Philippou brothers are turning into some of the more interesting directors of Horror and I'm looking forward to future offerings from them.

Revisits

Angel Heart (1987)
I love this film, it's in my top Horrors of all time. A murky and atmospheric tale (albeit somewhat convoluted), it has an Oscar worthy performance by Mickey Rourke, whose seedy gumshoe Harry Angel, looks for missing crooner Johnny Favourite, at the behest of mysterious stranger Louis Cyphre, (a nicely sinister Robert De Niro), only to fall down an occult rabbit hole. It blends its film noir and Horror elements seamlessly and is genuinely creepy in parts.

Heat (1995)
Remember being blown away by the epic shootout in the cinema back in the day and it's still a timeless classic 30 years later and one of the best remakes of all time, with an amazing cast.

Minority Report (2002)

Still a really enjoyable and engaging dystopian thriller from Spielberg, that kinda reminds me of Terry Gilliam's Brazil (1985) actually

my favorite scene is when Sally is hysterical after she learns Joe is engaged and Harry comes over to console her. And she realizes that it wasn't that Joe didn't want to get married, it was that, "he just didn't want to marry ME."

And then, "And I'm gonna be 40."
"When"
"...someday."

was this as unrelentingly dark as Talk To Me? Very well made movie, but my god it was sooooo dark and depressing.

I found it considerably darker actually, it's really bleak and sombre stuff, but still really good.

Sorcerer is great you can see the sweat pop from the screen. I was very lucky to meet William Friedkin at a Killer Joe screening and he signed my mate's Sorcerer dvd and signed my Cruising one. Despite his rather crazy reputation he was an absolute gent.

they should play estranged brothers who are forced to come together in some comedic way

My best mate is a sick son of a bitch. He was the one who loaned me the "proper" version of A Serbian Film (an imported director's cut), and helped me realize it's actually a black comedy. And reflecting on it, it is quite funny. He watches everything under the sun, is a notable Michael Haneke fan and put me on Yorgos Lanthimos back when Dogtooth came out, a ****ing fantastic film. He told me Bring Her Back is pretty hardcore, even by his standards. Lots of walkouts during screenings too, apparently.

I wasn't aware of the Phillipou Brothers' YouTube channel RackaRacka and this **** is incredibly funny. They didn't have any real filmmakers to lean on in their early days, seems they're mostly self taught. This is my favorite of theirs

Their interview on Michael Rosembaum's podcast is terrific. I got a bit emotional listening to this one.

I watched this the other night and I agree. In fact I got through 2/3 of it and bailed out. Not because it wasn't made well, but because it was a too much of a downer. Two innocent kids, one blind , who just lost their father are basically terroized for most of the movie through no fault of their own . Very creepy acting and creepy score makes you cringe. Sally Hawkins acts great in a creepy way. I coped okay with Talk to Me. I like terror movies more when there is some justification like desecrating burial grounds or taunting evil spirits and the victims aren't helpless.
