I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet
So I am curious on Carney's strategy if Trump puts the 35% tariffs in place August 1 st
The one thing I find puzzling is the argument that Canada never has imposed its 500% tariffs on dairy products as they are so far the quota were it kicks in than why not get rid of it ?

i think the strategy is stfu and dont make him mad untill he does it then do something then. its probably the correct strategy. making trump mad is how you lose. see brazil and maybe justin.

its much easier to eu and the us to accept 15% tarrifs. its like 5% of their trades. its 80% of ours. Just because the usa is such a massive trade partner for us does not mean were a massive trade partner for them. It will hurt us disproportionately easily enough for a major recession

But fwiw, yes something did change permanently, the reliability of the Americans, nothing we could really do about it but move forward and diversify more which we should have done a long time ago .

Diversify means finding new markets for the products we currently ship to the USA . Note I do believe this will apply to all items outside of NAFTA or whatever Trump called it
One thing the USA is paying more for is steel and aluminum which tariffs have already increased. It has already cost many jobs in the Quebec and Ontario region
I am not sure what Carney's strategy will be if Trump imposes 35% tariffs . Personally I like to see them export tax Oil, power and minerals and potash .

Well if the Trans Canada Pipeline Oil is going to China . Problem is China is a good market but we piss them off with our tariffs on EV's
Reality is we do not have much of the infrastructure to ship to foreign markets so I get your point

It's always funny going down the rabbit holes of the far right hate-o-sphere. If you read 1. it makes it sound like RBC dropped a lawyer (like from representing RBC?) BECAUSE of their association with the freedom convoy. That seems entirely reasonable regardless, but it isn't close to the truth. This person was dropped as a banking client because of making sketchy crypto transactions outside of RBC's risk appetite.
She said in an interview that the letter that let her know the bank was severing their relationship with her, also known as being debanked, followed two transactions with cryptocurrency platform Shakepay Inc.

I don't really care, it's fact people involved with these protests were debanked. But I know a bunch of people who regularly use shakepay and have not been debanked.
Sure sounds like you care since you immediately started up with spuriously connecting this case (which seems to have nothing at all to do with the freedom convoy protests) with that old political debate. Like lozen probably was just deceived by seom far-right social media to connect those dots, but you just learned they were not connected and STILL wanted to make the point. Great job not caring!

Well it's a good thing we have a (pretty good) criminal justice system so that the mob rule of far-right nutjobs listing off examples of people with immigrant-sounding-names and giving a half sentence of context isn't the one who gets to decide these things. Like you get that "hey look at the bad [insert immigrant archetype]" has been a hallmark of racism for like forever, right?
I mean either getting the identical deal as EU or as Korea or as Japan would all be horrible for Canada - our dependency on the US is insane. Although I do agree with Shifty for once, this magical "just diversify markets" is mostly a pipedream, like if we had competitive advantages before we would have diversified already, and getting free trade agreements is going to be even harder in this protectionist era of the global era.
