Chinese feminism is incredibly ideologically diverse. It includes some messaging remarkably consistent with state sponsored ideological viewpoints, it includes others that are positively iconoclastic. It includes some viewpoints emphasizing radical autonomy and being one's unapologetic self, defying suffocating societal expectations that were formed solely due to the genitalia you were born with. It includes other viewpoints that celebrate maximal strategic parasitism and mocks men for being inadequate hosts. That phrase "ideologically diverse" almost seems impossible to exist in a country like China. How can so many people with the same label have beliefs that are so at odds with one another in a country known for ideological unity and incredibly low political polarization between men and women more broadly?

This would be an excellent topic for a series of wall of text posts or even a 2 hour long youtube deepdive... It would involve a looottt of audio translation work that I'm not prepared to allocate time to at any time in the next several months.

In fairness western feminism as a concept has been around a long time and has gone through numerous iterations (often generalized as waves).

What you are calling feminism isnÂ’t really feminism as many past waves would understand the term. It is left wing progressive religious orthodoxy, which incorporates some ideas from feminist movement and rejects others.

But as you noted, like most orthodox religious movements, the focus of progressivism is on collectivism, conformity, appeal to authority, and ideological purity tests.

Different cultures are weird and not surprisingly most people are incredibly myopic about understanding social norms. The key point is to understand and hate them for what they are rather than remaining ignorant about why you hate them. For example: Eating with your fingers. If I can wipe my hand on my pants and be on with with my day, its finger food. If you can't meet this simple test, you are not a finger food. So brown people eating curry with their hands are gross because it makes a giant ****ing mess, not because there is something inherently wrong with eating with your fingers or being poor brown people.

Most poor people have some really non-western views toward sex work that are almost entirely driven by money. I think most of this is also that when memes (in the Dawkian sense) are generally countercultural and exist on the fringe there is a lot of room for heterogeneity and exploration. And then when they get consumed by mainstream culture they become homogenized. In the 1960s United States there was probably a lot more heterogeneity and exploration of feminism than the current understanding.

I think it's neither; it's a job like any other and it seems to have higher mental health costs for those doing it as a career. I'm sure being an park ranger, beekeeper, gardener, or interior designer have positive mental health effects, being a sex worker, special education teacher, maximum security prison psych ward guard, or front line combat infantry all have very high mental health costs. Last year being the singular exception, being a high school teacher has had a VERY positive impact on my mental health over the years and despite all that big talk about moving onto coaching, I still have some ambivalence because the point of life is not just maximizing money and freedom but also mental wellbeing and generally a career involving nurturing other people, altruisim, and being able to very directly see the results of one's individual efforts have very high EV on mental health. Add in ample time off during each year, good compensation, and very high social status in the particular place where I do it now (though not necessarily in other countries) and you've got a real banger that's hard to get up and leave just because of one abberational bad year.
