Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
I don't know whether I liked this film or know whether or not Von Trier is full of ****, but I did find it engaging.
It's like GG Allin. Are you laughing at him, with him or just bummed out about the whole thing? Either way, it's something.
that's one von Trier I haven't bothered with yet...doesn't seem like something I'd enjoy.
I think it is worth seeing although you probably won't want to see Shia and Mia in the same film.

beau travail is a great, great movie, spirit of the beehive too. i’ve seen many from the list but nowhere near John. I know Jeanne dielman was or is on MUBI so maybe ill get around to watching that soon

A friend and I were just talking about how great Andrew Garfield is, and he mentioned this movie. Said he watched it a few months ago and didn't really understand it but still thought that it was cool. Didn't say much else. I hadn't heard of it but put it on my watch list. Gonna watch it tonight after seeing your comment.
Today I watched Mallrats. What can I say, I'm a fan of Jay and Silent Bob.

released 40 years ago today...still makes me laugh

My favorite throwaway laugh is when Ricky chases Monique and Lane out of the school dance and he's carrying some helium balloons....as he's running after the other two, the balloons get away from him and float off...and he turns back and does this little hop after them, like he might be able to catch them. But he can't. then he continues his chase of Lane and Monique.
It's a purely visual thing that only lasts a second or two, but it always makes me laugh out loud.
Better off dead being 40 years old makes me feel …old. I watched the **** out of that movie on vhs.
For me the skiing was always a bit of a headscratcher. Not unwelcome, just something that was out of left field. I always liked to picture them already in production as Hot Dog came out and then someone gets a call where the studio tells them they need to have skiing in the movie.
John Cusack had that and the Sure Thing in the same year.
A few years ago, we had a new guy join our bar-poker league. At one point, he asked if I'd show if he folded. He'd been playing a few weeks at this point; I'd gotten to know him a little and new he had a good sense of humor.
I said, "Sure, for three dollars," expecting him to laugh and fold. Surprisingly, he tossed me three bucks and I showed whatever.
Later that night, I said that I messed up, and said I should've asked for "my two dollars," trying to imitate the kid's voice. All of us of a certain age got a good laugh out of that.
Watched Grosse Point Blank the other night with both John and Joan Cusack and Minnie Driver.
I love the ending when Cusack asks Driver to marry him. Her father who's sitting in the bathtub with her after Cusack blows away tons of guys trying to kill him says, "You have my blessing."
Great soundtrack, too.

I've been reading a lot of Fantastic Four comics so I decided to try the movies that came out 2005,2007 and the 2015 reboot. The 2005-2007 movies actually were quite faithful to the comics. A lot of inside jokes (like the Thing having 4 fingers instead of 5) and I thought the performance by Evans as Human Torch was great. Overall, the movies were much better than I expected (I had very low expectations). I also thought the reboot was better than I expected, but mainly because the first half was solid, the second half went off the rails and it didn't really have any sense of humor (the comics have a lot of sense of humor).

Three psychopaths in the top seven, how cute. Ledger, sure. Denzel was much better in Man On Fire. LMAO Bardem’s toupee lugging around an air tank, flipping his silly coin. Store owner should’ve told him “Ve a casa y coge tu caja para lustrar zapatos.” Most overrated villain ever

Speaking of odd, if I am reading something about Say Anything or Better Off Dead, I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the other. Started from when they were first released. I used to have the same problem with Cate Blanchett & Tilda Swinton.
Aykroyd was also great in GSB; along with High Fidelity, two of the best examples of a “perfect little movie”. Sideways & Lost In Translation might be considered the heavyweights of that genre.
Other than the one he did with Pacino & De Niro, has Cusack ever been bad or been in anything bad? May have asked that before.
Can't remember the name, but the end of the world where he's a limo driver seemed pretty bad.
