Bernie isn't a Democrat, never was a Democrat. He shouldn't have even been on any ballots. I don't know why the DNC didn't just ban him from running in their primaries, but I guess they thought it would make them look bad or something. I think they made the wrong decision and went to a whole lot more stupid effort by doing the things you note above, when they could have just told him "Bernie, we don't put people who aren't members of our party on our ballots."

Bernie's policies are in synch with the most popular Democrat in American history .... FDR. FDR would not be welcome in the party today.
The GOP had no such trouble with Trump. He came in insulting every member of the GOP establishment during the 2016 primary. Remember "Lying Ted" and "Little Marco". Trump provided an anti-establishment identity when the public was aching for that. The Dems provided the essence of establishment in Hillary Clinton. A politician who had zero track record of winning a competitive election.

I think Bernie would have done better against Trump than Hillary did. I also think if Bernie was given the gift to not age and to be able to run again in 2028 he would be the best candidate so far.

the answer to this question is a definitive yes (although that isn't cruelty).
and we know it is a yes because no state passed a comprehensive coverage of healthcare at the state level, nor free tuition (although that was common in the past) nor whatever you have in mind for housing to be cheap.
btw even if sanders had been a candidate, and had won, you need congress to pass those things
