What's the punishment if your citizens were to troll and gaslight an issue like this?

by formula72

You really might be the most tyrannically minded Indvidual that I have ever met

Were your parents tyrannical when you were a kid ? Did they let you stay up until 3AM when you were 6 years old ? Did they let you eat cookies and potato chips for dinner ?

I hope not.

That's a really good question.

We all know it's inappropriate to yell "fire" in a crowded theater when there is no fire ..... because people can get hurt in a stampede.

It seems to me that it should also be inappropriate to say everything is fine when there is an actual fire that people need to get out of the way of.

I would probably tell people like Musk and Zuckerberg that they can't be hosting climate science denial on their platforms. I would declare an emergency similar to WW2 with respect to the cllmate crisis. People who want to claim that it's a hoax might need a timeout. That might mean taking them out of circulation until they can pass a basic science test or agree to refrain from spreading dangerous and misleading perspectives.

I would deal with it from the standpoint of the security of human civilization being the apex priority. There has to be a deterrent to being on the wrong side of a war.

Milankovitch Cycles are an extremely important piece of science in that they provide a documented historical reference point for carbon-warming feedback loops. If people are going to mislead people about the underlying science behind these cycles, they are undermining the simple truth which helps people grasp the problem.

We'll let the PhD's explain it to them in boot camp.

Well ... if someone is explaining to me that an elliptical orbit is the default and a circular orbit exists in nature ..... then perhaps someone can explain why there is an exception ?

Triton's orbit around Neptune is effectively a perfect circle.

Why ?

You're looking at it backwards. Billions of years ago Triton’s orbit was much more elliptical. Billions of years later - as Triton lost energy due to [insert physics] - its orbit became much less elliptical, ie, almost a perfect circle.

Can you tell me where you learned this ? Do you have a source that you can link ?

At this point .... I think we're going down a worthless tangent with this dive into orbital dynamics.

The term which is used to define the deviation from circularity in an orbit is eccentricity.

What I have been saying all along and what NASA says in the linked article above .... is that the principal reason for the Earth's eccentricity in its orbit around the Sun is the gravitational pull from Jupiter and Saturn.

If you don't like what NASA has to say ..... take it up with NASA. I am just regurgitating what NASA (and many other sources) says. Unlike some people here, I don't pretend to be smarter and try to engage in one upmanship with people from NASA. I respect that they are the experts on this kind of thing.

The entire purpose of getting into this topic was to explain why the Earth has regularly oscillated between ice ages and warm periods for millions of years and to enlighten people about the carbon / warming feedback loops inherent in these cycles which illustrate an example of the new feedback loops we are triggering with the rapid increase in greenhouse gases.

We have started a chain reaction ....... similar to a skydiver jumping out of a plane ...... once a person steps out of the plane .... there is nothing that can stop them from coming down to Earth.

I don't take pleasure in exposing people who pretend to be smart about something when they really aren't. But in the world of debate .... sometimes it's necessary to compete in order to establish one's credibility. I hope you posers learned something.

Neptune's moon Triton just might have a subsurface ocean
[....]
Directly after capture, the moon would have been in a highly elliptical, eccentric orbit. This type of orbit would have raised large tides on the moon, and the friction of these tides would have caused energy to be lost. The energy loss is converted into heat within the moon, and this heat may have melted some of the icy interior and formed an ocean beneath Triton's ice shell.

The energy loss from tides is also responsible for gradually changing Triton’s orbit from an ellipse to a circle, researchers say.

Of the many unjustified victory laps I have seen people take in the 2+2 Politics forum, this is the most recent.

Why is it not justified Rococo ? Are you just butthurt that I was right ?

Edit: Perhaps you are more comfortable keeping the conversation about me than the substance that we are f***ed as a result of no grown up steering the ship ?

Good find.

Well ... if someone is explaining to me that an elliptical orbit is the default and a circular orbit exists in nature ..... then perhaps someone can explain why there is an exception ?Triton's orbit around Neptune is effectively a perfect circle. Why ? Some force that is present almost everywhere else is missing in that scenario. What is it ? It's not critical that I understand

Sure! In the video you claimed nobody here can understand they set F=ma equal to the F from Newton's Law of Gravitation. When you do this you get a term, in polar coordinates dr/d(theta) [1/r^2] + some other stuff equals 0. One possible solution is to just set r to a constant then any derivative involving r has to be 0 so you can eliminate this term. But there is no requirement from Newton's laws that that is always valid. As you can see, even from the vety best examples you can find in our solar system, it's only an approximation and the term is not zero, but just very small.

No.....you are not. NASA is correctly pointing out that the changes in the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit over fairly long time scales are due to the influence of other masses, mainly Jupiter and Saturn. Nobody disagrees with this. You incorrectly conflated changes in eccentricity with nonzero eccentricity, as in the first post I replied to

1) Gravitational forces of other planets. When the Earth is between the Sun and Jupiter, the gravitational force of Jupiter pulls the Earth further away from the Sun. When Venus is between the Sun and the Earth, the gravitational force of Venus pulls the Earth closer to the Sun. The result is an elliptical orbit

That is again, not how orbital dynamics works. Without other planets, the Earth would be in an elliptical orbit with constant eccentricity, not 0.

Fine ... but from a quantification standpoint .... the majority of Earth's eccentricity is due to the gravitational force of Jupiter and Saturn. Do you dispute that ?

Yes, I 100% dispute that. The majority of Earth's eccentricity is from the fundamental laws of orbital mechanics evidenced by solving Newton's equations for just the Earth and sun. The majority of the changes in the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit is due to Jupiter and Saturn. Nobody has shown any calculations to justify that, but it's pretty obviously true.

So ... why is Triton is not in an elliptical orbit ?

It is. But specific details about the Triton Neptune system like Tritons mass, position, volocity and composition lead to a situation where the approximation I discussed of dr/dtheta=0 works better than normal. Why do you care so much about this one random moon out of all the dozens in our solar system?

Triton is relevant because it represents an example of a circular orbit and it begs the question .... what forces cause an orbit to be elliptical or circular ?

Back to regularly scheduled programming.

Property insurance rates have increased by 70% in the last 5 years, far outpacing inflation.

This is an example of how capitalist society will unravel. These are the impacts of our toxic waste .... no different than what occurs in a microbiology lab with bacteria in a petri dish.

So you basically want to be a lord and consume a lot. I'm curious .... some people have a need to be useful. In order to feel good about themselves, they feel a need to add value to the world. I understand your saying that you want to be free of the need to work. But is there some work that you would choose to do if you had complete freedom ? Do you want to do anything more tha

I want to come back to this question Lucifer. You haven't answered it. I'm curious about what makes you tick.

From what I can gather from your writing ..... your sole ambition in life has to do with ranking vs others.

by Nut Nut

Triton is relevant because it represents an example of a circular orbit and it begs the question .... what forces cause an orbit to be elliptical or circular ?

Like you said, Tritons orbit is elliptical just with lower eccentricity than other observed moons/planets. There is nothing different going on with the dynamics of Triton than any other orbiting body.

Ecriture d'adulte .... the entire purpose of explaining Earth's orbital eccentricity was to explain why Earth has oscillated between ice ages and warm periods.

How would you explain to a layperson why that oscillation occurs ?

by ecriture d'adulte

Yes, I 100% dispute that. The majority of Earth's eccentricity is from the fundamental laws of orbital mechanics evidenced by solving Newton's equations for just the Earth and sun. The following is from NASA's website. You think NASA is wrong ?

Eccentricity – Earth’s annual pilgrimage around the Sun isn’t perfectly circular, but it’s pretty close. Over time, the pull of gravity from our solar system’s two largest gas giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn, causes the shape of Earth’s orbit to vary from nearly circular to slightly elliptical.

I find orbital mechanics to be deeply troubling. entropy is always increasing.

This science article documents one of the feedback loop items inherent in Earth's systems.

As it gets warmer, soil leaks out more CO2 to the atmosphere.
