Talk About Movies: Part 4

I love Moneyball so much. It's one of my most rewatched films. I love the dialogue, the cast and this could be my favorite Brad Pitt performance. Is it his best? I don't know, man. It's a compelling argument.

His "Adapt or die." line is universal. I'm in the video game content creation space and I can't emphasize how important this is. Some ppl get stuck in their ways, try doing the same thing over and over and expect better results.

Also "If we try to play like the Yankees in here, we're going to lose to the Yankees out there." Some content creators get stuck in a cycle of trying to mimic larger, more successful content creators. But those people have an editor(s), a manager and who knows who else on their team. The smaller content creators typically have to juggle a full time job, friends/family and their own content.

He doesn't have the most airtime or dialogue, but PSH knocks it out of the park (no pun intended) with every moment he's on screen.

And the point of the movie with the payoff. I love Moneyball. I've seen it countless times and that final scene wrecks me every time.

One Battle After Another - absolutely superb. Maybe every generation experiences this but as a parent of young one I feel a lot of anxiety about what kind of world my kid will grow up in, and the themes of fighting for what’s right while being a parent, trying your best (and often failing), trying to shield & protect them at all costs, and unconditional love through it all really hit me hard.

Aside from that just an outstanding piece of storytelling cinema, as good as it gets in my opinion. Spellbinding, tense, hilarious, the kind of movie only PTA can pull off. At first I wasn’t sure if I bought Lockjaw’s character but holy smokes what a performance by Penn.

Moneyball and Big Short are the two movies that I rewatch the most. Love the scene with Shapiro in Cleveland. All of the scenes with the scouts and when they show up at Hatteburg’s house. Only thing I don’t like is the movie left out that Oakland had some huge stars on those teams. It wasn’t just the moneyball strategy.

Code 3 was surprisingly great! I was expecting a goofy comedy and there was a touch of that here and there, but it’s was so much more. It’s not a flick you’d think much of before seeing it.

“You are outside your mind.” is ****ing brilliance.

Hudson, Mulder and Zito were probably the strongest 3-man starting pitching core in baseball at the time and they never get mentioned and they were the main reasson for the teams success.

Love the Hatteburg house scene. The family aspect and the embrace with his wife at the end? C'mon. That gives me chills and mists my eyes something fierce.

Oh yeah I've seen Big Short a handful of times. Was especially fun going back and watching after watching a few seasons of Succession. Brad Pitt also great in that one. His speech where he told the young stock brokers to stop celebrating and educated them on the statistics of people dying with rising unemployment. That one hit really hard because my father retired just before the crash and he lost EVERYTHING during the crash. He's always been a humble man and came from nothing, just wish he had more of a cushion when he retired. He made the best of it, though.

That's very true about Oakland. That was the tail end of when I followed baseball. I was a Mariners fan back then but had a ton of respect for Chavez and Tejada. I do remember them being gutted and thinking there's no way they'd compete for at least a couple of seasons.

Moneyball and The Big Short are both incredibly rewatchable.

One Battle After Another probably had no chance of living up to my expectations, but I did really like it and will watch it again in theaters. I will say the almost 3 hours flew by and it probably could have been longer tbh. Have to digest it more to do some «review» of it so maybe after the second watch. Also this is sort of a stupid nitpick from my side i guess, but i wish pta never got it in his head that Alana Haim has anything to do in movies. She has a v small role here thankfully, not the lead like in the last one.

Also had to rewatch Inherent Vice after. Have seen it many times before and it’s as funny and beautiful as ever. Simply a perfect movie imo, from the performances to the music to the visuals and of course the crazy Pynchon plot.

I wish it would have been an 8-10 episode limited series. One of the quickest almost 3 hour movies in existence. I really enjoyed it but I need to think about it a little more as well. It’s a lot to take in.

Fantastic 4: First Steps

Another good new MCU movie. The CGI was a little rough in a few places, but I thought the acting was fantastic , and I really enjoyed the story.

Detour by Edgar Ulmer

Love the voiceover and the dialogue. One of those film noirs that hits all the right notes. Unfortunate man runs into lousy dame. Lousy dame brings about man's ruin. It's Adam and Eve all over again. In this one, though, the lousy dam lies dead, accidentally strangled to death by a telephone cord.

(Ulmer got his start directing Yiddish films.)

Also watched Altered States. Years ago, 1980, went on a first date to see it. Hard to believe that was 45 years ago.

Always take a woman to a horror films for a first date. She will grab onto you at least once during the scary scenes. If she doesn't, then don't go to a second.

I've been a major fan of the MI franchise since day 1. I was stoked for this one but felt so let down. I get they want to make it accessible to any knucklehead who bought a ticket without ever having seen a previous MI movie, but the lengthy exposition brought this one to a crashing halt. I didn't want all of the other movies Cruisesplained to me. Was also underwhelmed by the action, and the pacing of the action felt too stretched out in this one. Long stretches without a care chase scene, random fight scene or shootout, so many elements made this a snooze fest.

Probably v hot take but Mission Impossible series peaked with the first one and been downhill since then

My buddy looks at me like I'm taking crazy pills when I tell him the first one was the best one. It felt like the franchise leveled up when McQuarrie entered the picture. They were always an event for me when they came out, but on recent rewatch I do agree the first one is the best of the bunch.

This is what killed MI2 for me. It started out gangbusters, then we had 20 minutes of exposition/character development, then we had 20 minutes of gadget lust, and then I'm asleep.

I would have loved to seen what Buster Keaton could have done with this franchise.

28 Years Later - I ask this with all the hate in my heart, did Garland use AI to write this script? There are some interesting concepts here, but the Tony Scott DOMINO knock off **** was off putting to say the least. The alpha stuff had so much potential but is fumbled with an incredibly boring framework. The camera work made me glad I watched this at home, it’s over the top and ridiculous for no reason. The stock footage and audio **** st the beginning is also a bloody chore to sit through. What a let down.

Apparently this is a new trilogy that is completely new canon that has nothing to do with the previous movies. Apparently I missed it in the ADHD voiceover/stock footage/medieval movie footage that the 2nd movie was removed from canon. The stylistic editing had me so disgusted and triggered I couldn't properly absorb the exposition they dumped on my lap.

Why the **** did they bury Jack O'Connell at the end of the film? He was the best part. I think the Jimmy character(s) at the end were a nod to Eli Roth's Cabin Fever. That movie has a weird kid named Dennis who looks exactly like O'Connell and his crew and he does flips and martial arts kicks and ****

TLDR i hate this movie

"Would that it were so simple." That sequence made me roll my eyes, and I cry through Michael Bay movies.
