Las Vegas Casual Dining Thread
We have the fine dining thread, but everyone needs some good casual places to eat, either on the strip or local. I'm fi
Went to Jipata and it was fantastic. Reminiscent of Chada.
2 of us ate well:
- Corn Som Thum
- Mushrooms in Miso Butter
- Sour Sausage
- Fried Pork Belly
- Garlic Shrimp
- Crying Tiger Steak
- and a bottle of a nice, simple, Gruner Veltliner
Out the door under 200 with wine. Very happy. All dishes were very good (the sauce with the steak was great), but we decided the corn and the sour sausage were "I'll order this every time i come here" level -- not something I'll crave but the sausage was super unique and well done, and the corn was just so flavorful and fresh (better by the end of the meal actually - it all benefits from some time to marry). Great date spot. But it seemed like the only people there were those "in the know" about the industry (and the lineage), based on the conversations we overheard at the 4-5 tables full a few nights ago.
Do you recommend a reservation for Jipata (if they take them)?
Same but i wasn’t right for 3 days after eating the gua kling at lamaii. Holy ****. It was so good but so spicy and I paid so so dearly for it. Oof. :-X
Very nice of you, sent you a message.
Vegas got too many good places to eat. Been here 14 years and still have a laundry list of places I want to go to, then they keep opening new spots and it’s hard to get to them all. The struggle is real.
I did get your pm, I think the best way to send you the card is to mail it. As I will be in Las Vegas starting later this week, pm me again and I'll drop it in the US Mail for you.
Lol at "the struggle is real". That is definitely a "First World Problem".
I need some inspiration. Taking the family out to a higher end but casual dinner -- kids 9 and 7 need a couple of safe menu options but can otherwise eat anywhere (i.e., they are very well-behaved). Prefer non-Italian, non-Japanese, non-Mexican (which are our usual options).
Where we going?
Grand lux cafe, Mon Ami Gabi?

what's the best strip pizza? is there such a thing? it cant be at cosmo can it?
Our favorite is still Secret Pizza at Cosmo, honestly. Others like others, but for taste and cost, still our champion.
If you want good pizza in Vegas youβre not doing it on the strip.
Any recommendations on asian soft shell crabs ? We have them at lemongrass at Aria and they are really good but we don't want to go to the strip everytime we want these.

I get money line pizza sometimes and it hits the spot. I never pay real dollars for it, though.
I still really like bang bar, eggslut was ok but I got the hot honey biscuit from the district donut place in the cosmo food court and it was damn good. Cosmo food court overall is good. Far superior to Aria.

Cosmo food court is a great food option if down there. Not sure of the name, but I hear thereβs a very solid pizza place in Venetianβs new food court that I would assume has to be better than criminally overrated secret pizza.
Calabash West African restaurant on Rainbow and Oakey...it's in a strip mall and is in the corner next door to the cool cat cafe!
This well-reviewed restaurant has a nice vibe and a great and friendly wait staff.
GF and I ate off the vegetarian side of the menus and got:
Peanut Butter Stew “Mafe / Domoda”
Peanut butter soup with vegetables, spices, and choice of Protein with choice of side. We got fried plantains instead of meat. It was excellent.

Bean Stew “Ndembe”
Black eyed pea stew cooked with onions, bell peppers, garlic, and select seasonings with choice of Chicken, Beef, or Vegetarian/Vegan.
Excellent as well, especially with a side of Fufu (Dough-like starch, made out of yam flour formed into a ball and served warm.)

Fataya Pies / Empanadas
Savory Empanadas with Chicken, Beef, Seafood, or Vegetarian* filling. Good stuff.

Also had some Palm wine that went well with the meal, a side of the smokey-flavored jollof rice and for dessert, some fried beignets that were like sweet hush puppies. Very good.
The also had great music playing - seemed like an Afro-beats channel - and then some live music with a guy playing keyboards, bongos, and singing. Good place to go for a drink and listen to the music, too.
The photos are from their menu, but our food looked exactly like those pictures! We will be going back soon...our waitress helped us with the menu and kept bringing us other free food to try "for next time" lol. Most of the clientele were African - not black, actually African. Always a good sign.
Check it out.
First time at Cote last night. Price is more fine dining but itβs a Korean BBQ spot with a DJ so Iβm putting it here. Food was great, little bit different than Hobak/8oz as the cuts are more steakhouse than bulgogi and thereβs no spicy pork or anything available, just steak for the bbq part.
Pork belly bacon - 9/10, great crust. Bavetteβs bacon still reigns supreme though. $24
Caesar - 8/10 pretty standard. $24
Banchan - 8/10, but shout out to the scallion salad which was 10/10. I need a giant bucket of that to keep around my fridge. Free with entree purchase.
Skirt steak - 10/10, perfectly done. $54
American wagyu Cote cut - 9/10, not sure exactly what the cut was. Great but preferred the skirt which is also cheaper. This was $78.
Steak portions are 8oz each.
Frozen custard with miso caramel sauce - 8/10, no other dessert options here but was a nice finisher. Free with entrees.
Overall 9.5/10, loved it. Ended up being free with poker comps. Was more than enough food, could have skipped the Caesar given how much banchan stuff there was.

yum
100% correct as usual from WJ.
I found Cote a little more pedestrian but i was SO excited to go that it was a little bit of a letdown. For the price, I'd rather go to 8oz. $1300 out the door for 5 of us with one round of cocktails and 2 $120 bottles of wine.
Scallion salad was 100% the star of the show. Inject into my veins.

Yeah we could have easily spent way more or a little less. I could go there and just get an 8oz portion of the steak plus the banchan and it would be enough really, but gotta try all the stuff. Next time Iβll try the hanger steak and galbi. Do wish they had some bulgogi or spicy pork on the menu but I get that theyβre trying to differentiate from the usual kbbq options and focus on steaks
PSA - La Barbecue from Austin TX has a pop up at Fountainbleau today through December 14. Some of the best BBQ Iβve ever had, top 2 brisket (was my #1 until I tried Franklinβs). Very highly recommend going to this, Iβm going to go tonight:
I live in Austin, and LA BBQ is definitely fire, strongly recommend. I'm in Vegas Sun-Wed and considering it even though I can have it here haha.
