1/3 Grinding and Bankroll
Hi all,
First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll manageme
I asked my boss if I could focus my work moving forward on the community hospital work which I strongly prefer. Will see what she says. If she’s willing to accommodate I’ll probably stay for the time being but if not I’ll probably leave.
Ran fine at 10/25, played ultra nitty folding all speculative hands, got AA twice AK twice AJs once, made nut flush with AJ and top set in 4! pot with AA. Got AKs in pre versus QQ and chopped AKo 4! versus a late position battle got through. M Folded KJo 22 JTs QJo and a bunch of junk. Called a 3! With KQs and whiffed. At plo lost AKTT7 to a worse A high and KJT98 to dsAA.
Still waiting to hear back from work about my accommodation request to telework four ways a week and about the job responsibilities.
My marginal opens all got 3! yesterday which was bad timing. Ended up a few hundo maybe. Oh and lost with bottom set to middle pair at limit hold em.
Won 24s v. AQo three handed 3! pot A35r flop then met a friend for dinner and now 10/10/50/100 invite gonna play well and book a big win.
Started stuck $9, 000 in the first hour losing all my AA but then ran it up to plus $17, 000. Lots of AA held multi-way. Yippie!
Now that is a comeback!!!
Walked into the poker room sat down at 2-5 and almost immediately left to go back home and work out and maybe get a hair cut and beard trim. Don’t feel like playing.
Must be nice to have that option. Technically, I have it, too, but only on Thursday and Saturday nights :(
After seeing friends for a bday dinner grinded some and won $1, 900. Funny, two players didn’t see the board pair on a flush runout within the same orbit in a big pot at plo and lost to boats. Poker is alive and well! I also flopped quads against someone and trapped him as he was repping aces full in A33. I tanked called and crai river and he snap folded saying he had nothing.
Prepped my hearings including dealing with a rude nurse who told me to stop calling them back to get my clients’ medical records….
Played mix a little lost in the limit hold em round before I had to give up my seat for people who were invited to play, QJs and AJo lost in lp battles. A6s also went nowhere. Told myself no marginal opens and then…lol. So much for playing like a super nit.
At plo was a bit annoyed to have gotten stuck at the mix and not have a seat, squeezed AKJ94ds got 4! by bad KK and lost, went with 87754ss multi-way against figuring high cards and the slightly better low hand scooped (98876). Gambled against two tight players in a raising war with another low hand and lost against AAK and KK. Won with A9875ds though. My bluffs did not get through at 2/5 either, someone turned aces up and someone else has two pair. What a bother!
At least I’m doing really well this month at around $20k profit.
Got out of court early and avoided involuntary admissions for all my clients, worked the weekend so took the afternoon for myself and witnessed a ridiculous hand at 10/25 open utg 3! co btn cold calls $6,500 eff. utg 4! small co flats the $575, btn ships $6,500 folds to co who calls with JJ and loses to BTN 54o. BTN snap quits...!
I mentally prepared myself to play a very disciplined session at the mix, no mistakes and no marginal spots. Everything that could have gone wrong did anyway, I was very card dead all session and the large blinds added up quickly. I did not force the action in general nor could I with the cards I was being dealt. Got A532ds in big o bvb he had A754 and made a wheel by the river when I flopped better low and two pair. AJ82 iso’d K742 and runout A53A6.
In 2-7td started with 872 defended bb v btn steal I improve versus his d3 and donk he raises I 3! he 4! I flat and make an 8. I am all in and a little excited blurt out what I made failing to realize we had another draw left. He pats his slightly worse 8 thankfully saying he was going to pat before I said that and I scoop.
In Badacey start with A75 versus sb steal three ways they draw 2 I made a 8/9 and get it in with one draw left and lose to loose player’s 4/8. He almost broke his low and thought we were chopping.
In badeucy get dealt a 742r which to me looks like gold by now and facing a raise and 3! and cold call I just put in another raise which basically put me all in, improve to 234r7 and brick and lose.
I open AKo limit hold em utg two callers flop KT8ss bet get raised call turn 7 bet call river dreadful 9 x/fold.
Won 3/4 in dramadugi with J dugi AJ nuts broadway and chopped Q dugi versus nut flush. Made the slight mistake of folding a J dugi once in this game from early position.
Got 456r in badugi squeezed and got it in heads up with a lot of dead money versus a T and failed to improve.
Folded a ton in the blinds to raises with garbage. Remarked that I go on good rushes in the smaller limits but almost never here. Just seldom gotten a good run of cards. Maybe once a year or so ago. Bummer.
I was thinking what’s the point of life yesterday. Seems pretty pointless for most people.
I played a little plo when the game was about to break and lost there too with top set and AAJT9. Wow.
Yuck. Sorry for the run-bad :(
Thanks. At least I won some back tonight the game ran again and I ran decently for a change and got some playable hands. I guess when that happens I have a chance at winning.
I was in a really foul depressed mood earlier today thinking bad suicidal things but playing and winning helped somewhat. Dealing with suicidal clients a lot really impacts me emotionally. As does losing nearly $10, 000 in a session. It still hurts no matter what. Maybe beating this game gives me another reason to enjoy life and not feel like nothing matters.
It's incredible how much a losing session can affect our mood, and it seems to have a disproportionately more powerful effect than a winning session. The winning sessions do help a lot, though, and I'm glad you have more of those 😉
You have a pretty darn good life from what I'm reading, but that doesn't mean diddly if you are not feeling well emotionally. Focus on the good things. Talk to a friend, and listen to someone wiser than I!

Yeah I know, we feel the pain of loss more than the joy of winning too.
Last night got dealt an 8 dugi got it heads up and improved to a five dugi and eight low and scooped. Got dsAA at dramaha high and flopped nfd rivered nut flush scooped with just aces in the hole. 234 cold called a 3! at 2-7td and went nowhere unfortunately. Then there was a cold 4! and I folded 742 reluctantly with no money invested and everyone was drawing three (good game!). My one card wheel draw got outdrawn by a two card draw. Flopped nld wheel draw in limit O8 and that didn’t improve. In big o got it in with AKT92 and scooped.
No weekend work thankfully except potentially a little prep for an appellate hearing I have on Tuesday. Maybe one or two hearings tomorrow.
Ran good at plo up $3k there. Nice to book a couple good wins back to back after that rough mix session to rebound at the end of the month.
Don’t you game hop all day long to bumhunt and hit and run? Can’t fault them for not wanting a parasite in the game. The people at low stakes don’t notice but at higher stakes and games with smaller players pools nits who constantly try to take advantage of others are shunned
Yeah this guy is basically the most hated person in the room.
Last session of October I ran good at mix and plo and booked a $4k win. Solid monthly nut. Lots of made hands holding in the dramaha variants and made a #1 #2 in Badacey against a 5/6. Got lots of good hands. 234 in stud 8 made a wheel I raised on fifth with 2345 and got there. Also pulled off a nice snow in badugi with a btn open with 238Qhhhh verus a d1 patted the whole way. Maybe I am finally going on my mixed game heater?
I was reviewing my results for the year and I am down a little (relatively speaking) in the biggest games, $20k at 10/10 plo5 and just $8k at the big mix, but extremely profitable in the midstakes games, making over $100 an hour at 1/2 plo5 and over $200 an hour at 5/10/25. I am also a slight winner at 2/5, believe it or not.
I did not go on my first heater at plo5 until three-plus years in and I am about at that point in the mix and start to see improvement and rungood. Heck, I was slightly winning in the big game until the recent rough session. I am hopeful if I keep it up and game select I will start winning in the big mix.
They are closing the boxes in the poker room unfortunately, but front money will be available, so I opened an account. Between that and cutting checks I feel like my money is safe and secure.
Ran fine at plo and 5/10/25, making strong hands and getting paid, KQo T985J runout got a quick call on my river pot sized bet in a 3! pot. Even got to play 25/50/100/(200) reserved game for a couple hours at the end of the night, ran well there too. Would have played longer but did not want to mess up my sleep schedule too much and regretfully told the host I had an early wake up that morning and was tired. (I was indeed very tired.) up around $6k to start the month. Let’s gooo!
