British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

Lashing out without substance? Tiredness I guess.

You should probably talk to a professional about why you can't sleep beyond 4am - it's usually indicative of depression or anxiety.

The utterly horrible people who govern us.

Police have arrested two men in connection with a mobile phone hidden in the House of Commons that was reportedly planted there to play sex noises during prime minister’s questions.

The phone was found near the frontbench during a routine sweep of the chamber. It is believed to have been intended to interrupt the keynote weekly showdown between Keir Starmer and Kemi Badenoch in September.

Rayner has already been offering cabinet posts to MPs in exchange for their support in advance of announcing a leadership challenge, according to the Torygraph.

Another reminder why we must stop voting 'least worst'

People granted asylum in the UK will have to wait 20 years before they can apply to settle permanently, under plans due to be announced by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood on Monday.

The major shake-up to asylum policy comes as the government seeks to reduce small boat crossings and asylum claims.

Under the plans, people who are granted asylum will only be allowed to stay in the country temporarily, with their refugee status regularly reviewed and those whose home countries are then deemed safe told to return.

Currently refugee status lasts for five years, after which people can apply for indefinite leave to remain.

Now the home secretary wants to cut the initial period from five years to two-and-a-half years, after which refugee status will be regularly reviewed.

But she plans to significantly lengthen the time it will take to gain permanent residence in the UK from five years to 20.

Bit rich considering you've made a career out of this on 2+2.

You keep saying this, but when every choice we have is just awful, what do you suggest?

If there's no candiate you want to vote for then dont vote.

We mustn't let them take our vote for granted. Don't fall for the lie that if you don't vote you don't matter. The reverse is true r if you sell your voting power so cheaply

the lesser evil

At least then we know what we're going to get.

It's going very well.

oooookay.

So if Farage where standing against a tub of lard, you think not voting is better than voting for the tub of lard?

That's easy I'd vote tub of lard. Voting for this 'changed labour' party with hideous reform appeasing policies is a terrible mistake. You do realise they are that way precisely because they believe when it comes to it we will vote least worse?

If we keep voting to make things worse then that is a vote for reform and worse. And if we keep voting for it then that's our fault. Democracy works.

and to repeat a point I keep making.

Everything is moving to the right because the right only vote for what they want. They don't have anything like a majority but they are winning anyway. Simply by having the stupidity to vote for what they want. We're too clever to fall for that and we're losing everything.

I will almost be certainly voting Lib Dem in the next election, even though they cannot win in my location, because they, to me, are the least worst. Should I not bother?

If it's up to me then you do what you think is best. Would you vote lib dem even if it's a labour vs reform seat? if so I think you're with me in not voting least worst.

Personally I'd also say that lib debs are a bit better than least worst. Overall I'd give then a decent score although I think we desperately need something more radical.

Unlike politicians, tub of lard can't later claim that everyone who voted for it is an enthusiastic lard eater.

I guess it might change nearer the time, I will never ever vote reform because I'm not mental/a bigot/a moron, I will definitely not vote tory in this election, and if labour actually do something radical in their remaining years, like actually raise tax and start planning health and social care with some level of competence and do something to fight reform rather than be reform-lite, they might sway me, but otherwise lib dem.

Greens would be in the running usually, but I do not like what is going on in their fringe elements one bit, even though I like the central platform and not concerned on the leadership.

Not even going to ask what your dodgy feeds have been telling you about the fringe elements of the Greens though I guess it’s something about Muslims or Israel.

Instead let’s look at a pretty picture:

London: “a world class city attached to a third rate country”

New measures set to be announced by Shabana Mahmood on Monday will include people granted asylum needing to wait 20 years before they can apply to settle permanently.

The plans will also see those granted asylum have their refugee status regularly reviewed and those whose home countries are then deemed safe told to return.

Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said the Conservatives would deport illegal migrants "within a week", while Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey called for asylum seekers to have the right to work.

Countdown to some thick dumbfukk here calling Tikaram racist and sexist.

The state of Labour MPs:

Krishnan Guru-Murthy, "Isn't this a real admission that your bigger project has failed?"

"You could stop all the illegal immigrants, deport a million people, and Britain would still be unequal, poor in places, lacking in opportunity, divided, all the things that are causing so much disgruntlement at the moment and the blaming of migrant communities"

Labour's Mike Tapp, "Not at all"

Krishnan Guru-Murthy, "If you were proving good public services, better opportunity, more equality, people wouldn't be pointing the finger at immigrants, would they?"

Labour's Mike Tapp, "We inherited an absolute mess"

Reform’s Danny Kruger says he “welcomes” and “recognises” the “rhetoric” used by the home secretary today, suggesting that Labour sounds like Reform.
