Yeah, this. You have to remember the social context in which he developed his theories, in other words within academia humans were seen almost entirely as blank slates. For him to therefore develop a theory that pushed hard against the orthodoxy of the time and still largely holds up today illustrates how important his work was/is.

One might say that back them academia was in Locke-down! 😀
In other news, you have to appreciate the irony of a literal Uighur doing a pro CCP PR stunt, while shitting on America. If this guy's family was living in China, they would have sterilized his mother to make sure he was never born. And given his families home to an ethnic Han family loyal to the CCP. Instead him and his family comes to America, the land of opportunity, that welcomes him with open arms. And he does nothing but **** on it (ironically for money in the capitalist system)
Thirld wordlism is literally the worst.
I mean, his ideas of universal grammar as originally posed are largely abandoned today, though they exist in modified form (some of which he himself has suggested). Of course, even if a lot of his original ideas on linguistics are no longer all that relevant, his influence on how to study linguistics and language is very much alive.
Regardless of academic position on linguistics or political stance, Chomsky is a brilliant man, which is to say he is worth reading even if one does not not agree with what he says or find it controversial. You'll learn something either way. Of course, he is from an age that occasionally managed to celebrate brilliance, these days we prefer mediocrity and celebrity.

We live in a time of moral panic and witch hunts for heretics who don’t pass ideological purity tests. This is true in the right and left. Not a good substrate for brilliance.

admittedly, I dont follow Piker or know really anything about his personal life, but a quick google search does not indicate he is a Ughur.

And it's not just pure linguistics where he's had an impact. Enough Turing Award winners have cited him as a major influence in creating some of the first high level programming languages so his legacy is no longer all that dependent on what's going on in philosophy or linguistics departments.

His uncle's last name is literally Uighur (obviously spelling in translation will differ). Regardless, the ethnic Turkish people basically came from that general area, the Uighur's are a population that ended up in Western China, and the general point stands.

Uighur is an ethnonational group so without the cultural side of things in what meaningful sense is Piker a Uighur?

this point?

Fair enough. I am the last person to criticize how the CCP handled their Islamic extremism problem. They actually took real steps to stop it, and by all accounts were succesful, as opposed to Europe which is letting itself be eaten alive through misguided empathy.
I still find Hasan's CCP PR tour to be very ironic. If you don't, suit yourself.
turks and uygurs are cousins and speak mutually intelligible language
remember my time in istanbul a lot of people had awful things to say about china
Yeah, church is where all the criminals hang out.

China committed and it still committing a genocide. They have over half a million people in concentration camps, and some 3 million slaves, all policies based on ethnicity.
We've just politely agreed not to bring it up, because China does not like it when we talk about it which could cost us like half a percent of economic growth and nobody can afford that.
As for combating extremism, I strongly doubt they have been successful. They have likely made sure it is illegal to say that have not been successful, and I would also guess they go out of their way to not define attacks within their borders as terror attacks. External threats and terror against Chinese interests abroad seem to have escalated, both as a response to their ongoing genocide, but also as response to their expansionist ambitions.
As for the influencers of the world which stumble in their haste towards the next atrocity to deny, they seem to like money.

nearly all the evidence about uyghur genocide comes purely from accounts of people abroad
china had a large semi nomadic muslim population that refused to send their children to school, learn chinese, nor participate in chinese society
many would literally send their children to madrassas in afghanistan rather than enter them in the local school system
this flew under the radar for a long time as china was ok with them doing their own thing
it wasn't until you had several dozen terrorist attacks transpire in the span of a few years that china decided they needed to do something about that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrorism_...
they figured the problem was extreme poverty (unable to integrate into society/job markets due to lack of basic education, job skills and language ability) and that made them very easily manipulated by al qaeda cells in bordering afghanistan where many uyghurs would send their children for a religious education in al qaeda madrassas
so they said - we don't care if you're happy living in your yurt amongst your goats - you need to learn chinese and get some basic vocational skills and your children need to go to school
the detention centers are exactly that, they bring them in and teach them chinese as well as job skills - with the condition that they can graduate once they show they know enough of the language and have enough skills other than tending to their flock in order to make it in the modern chinese world
since then - there's been zero instances of terrorist attacks in china - it's worked brilliantly
stories of sterilization, forced abortions, execution, etc are all unfounded and based on testimony of activists - who are very likely taking a page from kuwait - who's pleas for western help fell on deaf ears until they started giving fabricated speeches about iraqi soldiers killing babies in hospitals for fun
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nayirah_te...
does it suck to be a uyghur now - absolutely
has china stamped out terrorism - absolutely
is there a genocide transpiring - very unlikely
what a joke and not a surprise.
"Treasury secretary says ‘we will see’ about $2,000 rebate checks to Americans as Supreme Court weighs Trump’s tariffs "
since the tariffs isnt a tax and doesnt bring prices up.
why the needs to send a 2000$ check to every americans ?
ah yes, the debts matter all right....
2k check , what could possibly go wrong, no inflation for sure...
didnt baham accuse democrats for inflation, printing money and sending check to household ?
another crash and burn for baham
I guess you have already contacted the whole world's journalists with this insight? Ah well, of course you haven't, because you're just another Maga nut...
this could of been a moment to show hard evidence of said genocide - instead you make laughably stupid comments
you're such a pathetic loser, have no idea why the mods allow this alt of yours to exist
and... you will never be able to find a single instance of me praising trump

Being a troll isn't necessarily a bad thing if the troll is at clever or funny. BTS unfortunately is neither of those things in my humble.
Trolly oth is often very funny and even says something insightful on occasion imho.
