He won in 2024 largely because the Democrats were tied to the worst inflation in 40 years. Exit polls showed that was the biggest issue for voters and voters blamed the Democrats for that.

"Not my fault" never works as an explanation for Presidents. Voters give Presidents blame when things go bad and credit when they go good.
If inflation comes roaring back to 8-9 percent due to tariffs and rate cuts, voters will crush the Republicans because of it. There wasn't just a "little inflation" that pissed off voters.

So part of why his rating on inflation is that far under water is a decent chunk of his voters were expecting something anyone mildly knowledgeable knew wasn’t going to happen; some combination of high employment and decreasing prices.

yes when he promised to fix inflation they understood it as "bringing the price level where it was before".
except for energy where potentially that is possible through extreme deregulation and international shenanigans, it's quite absurd to think other prices can go down 10-15% without a massive, disastrous economic depression.
And even in that case it would be terrible for asset prices, public finances and so on.
