looking at Hurts' stats and advanced stats and a few things stand out.
most obvious is way less rushing attempts - 30-40% less than the past five years
lowest rushing TDs too since rookie season, but actually his most ever passing TDs
advanced stats wise....
- he's making a lot less yards per scramble attempt and
- he's running way less on his RPOs - only 10 rushes from 80 RPOs vs 32 from 90 RPOs
last season
- his pressure numbers are the same so nothing there
- his on target throw rate is the lowest since rookie year
- his bad throw % is the highest since his rookie year
- he hasn't suffered badly from drops relative to other years
interestingly, his air yards per completion are higher than any time since his rookie year but his YAC per completion is the lowest of his career. Which might be a scheme thing or might be him putting the ball in worse areas or that he's got less help from receivers
of all of those...there's no excuse IMO for him having so many fewer rushing attempts - it's one of his greatest strengths

The reduction in rushing makes no sense. At best, Hurts is an average thrower. His threat of scrambling/design runs opens everything up. He is not a pocket passer. He's 27 years old. He should still be in the prime of taking advantage of his rushing ability, especially because it's more built on size and strength rather than speed and agility. Let's hope the next OC goes back to it.

Hurts might be the best deep ball passer in the NFL.... or at least up there.
And yet, he was 22/36 in yards per attempt with one of the best WR duos in the league.
Lamar Jackson is #3, yet a lot of people on this board think he should be traded for a 1st or less and his coach just got fired.
Also, you should have probably mentioned Goedert, who was great this year, while AJB and Slim were both not exactly healthy.
Goedert was under career averages in almost every category, except TDs, which isn't predictive.
AJ missed 2 games. DeVonta didn't miss any.
I've said it before that I think Hurts catches more flack than he deserves. You can put my opinion in that same camp on Lamar too.
But to maximize Hurts and the entire offense, he needs to be more of a rushing threat. It opens up the running game. It opens up the deep ball. It opens up everything. Hopefully your new OC will be more creative.
Ok. I agree with all of that. It either means that it's Hurts fault or the coaching... and I tend to not believe Hurts forgot how to run or throw.
I will say that Needle's comments (or non comments) about the players makes me reconsider things, but that could mean that a coach goes through a lot and doesn't think the player is executing the play that the coach had in mind. I still tend to side with Hurts on things, though.
