Sorry!

we probably aren't getting that far down the list anyway

Yeah. The odds are against us but it's the best shot we have.

Gonna call it here.

Organ
Casino
Mug
Slug
Australia
Mouse
Hood
Match
America
Film
Luck
Slip
Moscow
Space
Club
Root
Staff
Block
Oil
Police
Unicorn
Cold
Cook
Paste
Parachute

oh wow, all but Moscow

not bad

clues can be ambiguous and nothing is 100%, even cat when the clue is jaguar

but n-1 is the only 100% word

and unlimited on turn 2 being 'next 2+ words on list' is next closest thing to 100%

the only caveat there is they may do that knowing you will hit neutral, which is ok early game, which is only reason it's not 100% like end game n-1

Film cannot be clued by simply clueing a film. The Truman Show is literally about a guy who is filmed 24/7 his entire life. Sister Act and The Lego Movie being movies (and one even having “movie” in the title) means nothing with respect to the words being clued.

The words being clued have to be a part of media being clued. You can’t clue Dog Day Afternoon to get bark or other animals (unless those animals are featured in the story).

I also will probably not clue 0 in this game to get more than one word eliminated. It’s way too easy to accidentally get “well, wasn’t there a scene where the guy ate a banana” when all you want to eliminate by clueing Alien - 0 is space. The Lego Movie is about a world made of Lego blocks. Minecraft was not something top of mind for me.

I don’t much care for this variant, but I’ll keep playing because I think it’s worth feeling out. But there are going to need to be a lot of adjustments with clue theory for it to not be a complete **** show.

after turn one, our list was great with just block/police as neutral

just needed Moscow and Luck and then run the list

I guess Guys and Dolls has some Russia connection that we weren't aware of, which is the danger with this variant

also, I read it as Sister Act 2 instead of Sister Act - 2, so was wondering why he would clue the 2nd one, which contributed to my not removing casino from consideration on turn 2, which cost us the game

our guess was:

Luck
Casino
Club
Film
Staff
Block
Root
Space
Bottles

If I had realized Casino wasn't ours, then we get luck/club/film/staff and end on block

we have root/space makeup with unlimited and he just has to clue Moscow for us to win

I knew hood was a risk with G&D, but the list was quite clean and I needed to get luck and club cleared and hope we could get to Moscow. Oh well, good effort guys. You picked up on everything I was doing.

With Sister Act, I was going for hood and organ - I didn't think beyond singing nuns. You all dug way deeper into the plot than I did on that one

I said this to IBD on DM, but I think for this variant we should remove album & film from the word list (meaning, re-rand if they show up). I think they make the game significantly worse, because movie titles are going to be the vast majority of clues here, and then we just spend every turn debating if film is the last word to guess

The only thing I actually knew going in about Guys and Dolls is that the Simpsons riffed on it.

Looking it up, it's about a bunch of street gamblers who work for a guy who runs illegal gambling.

Was it possible to avoid casino even if we knew the show backwards and forwards? Maybe, maybe not.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Casino. I knew that was huge risk with G&D, but was hoping Sister Act (she was a lounge singer at a casino) and the fact that G&D has gambling, but not in a casino setting would be enough to avoid it. There really just weren’t very many good options for our board. But you guys did great figuring things out.

interesting thoughts about words like film, movie, theater, stream, cast, plot

I don't think it's same as Dog Day Afternoon, as Truman Show and Guys and Dolls both don't even have movie or film or a synonym in them. The holistic concept of 'The Truman Show' is 'a movie about ...' so I don't think it breaks the rules to clue it for film.

But, if we assume any movie clue in a variant where 80% of the clues will be movies is for film/theater/movie or plot/cast/stream in a variant where 95% of the clues will hit those, then we will get ourselves into bad situations

only songs avoid plot and only books avoid stream and only books/songs avoid cast

but it's not illegal as it isn't for one of the words in the title like Dog. And in this case where he chose a tv show and you chose a movie, it made sense. But I won't assume it's film/cast/plot/stream/theater unless the clue is actually about one of those things in a bigger way than just "it is a movie" since you aren't doing that

Guys and Dolls was for luck (luck be a lady is its most famous song) and club (the primary setting, where Nathan Detroit’s doll Miss Adelaide is the star). But yes, it was a risky clue with casino on the board. I had to do it anyway.

yeah, I'll take the blame for casino; Sister Act starts with her working in a Casino with her mob boss bf before witnessing the murder which is why she was put into witness protection in a convent in the first place; and her being a lounge singer is the background for her working on updating the Church Choir's songs/arrangements

not sure why I thought he said Sister Act 2; Sister Act - 2 is clearly having the 2 for number of words, like every game; just too fast of a glance I guess

We got close. When you get close you can't really grumble.

looks like me vs eb; i'll rand up a list

Dog Day Afternoon was a bad example. A better example is Creed - 3. That cannot be used to get boxer/fist/olympus.

I can’t clue Brothers Karamazov for novel, but I can clue Misery.

if even i'm red

it's-a me!

Also, need to take care with words on the board like America. Just because something is set in America, it doesn’t mean America is correct. This is where clueing theory will need to evolve in this variant.

I get that The Truman Show was depicted in the movie as a cultural phenomenon in America, so the guess made sense. I was hoping that the setting never clearly being described as America (like, did Truman even know he was in the USA?) could sway you.

But as a general rule, connections need to be explicit in order to guess words like that. I’ll be clueing America with things like “The Patriot.”

I think we should talk more before just diving into another game, but maybe I’m alone here.

sure; I can always re-rand tho I haven't actually looked at anything yet

I agree with your sentiments that we should have more explicit connections for the vague things like America

to me, it was that his whole thing was setup as 50s Americana town, not just that the film was obstensibly in America; so I think that is enough in that case

but generally just because a film is likely set in random America place isn't nearly as strong of a connection since most films are as when cluing a movie set somewhere else (Australia, Moscow, etc.)

and I think understanding the other team's clues and avoiding them is more important as well (e.g., Sister Act) because lots of nuance in these clues and lists so that can help avoid landmines

we probably need to mostly expect to take an extra turn than normal games for these early goings at it, unless a banger happens to come up; playing it slow and safe may make more sense; even with a potential banger, if it's more esoteric media or the connections require someone really knowing the movie well, it's gonna be tough to pull those
