British Politics
Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.
--Cozying up to Xi because you are upset at Trump is the definition of cutting off your neck to spite your face. Whatever the rhetoric, in action dealing with the CCP is nothing but bad news, especially if you are doing it from a position of weakness like Britain is.
Speaking of cosying up to Xi, do you have any thoughts on this?
Donald Trump has been accused of “corruption, plain and simple” after it was revealed that a member of the Emirati royal family was behind a $500m investment into the Trump family’s cryptocurrency company.
Ethics experts say the deal – struck just days before the US president’s inauguration last January – amounts to a deep conflict of interest for the White House, amid calls for a congressional investigation into the transaction.
Months after the deal, the Trump administration announced that the United Arab Emirates would be allowed to import 500,000 of Nvidia’s powerful AI chips – overriding concerns that the deal could eventually allow China access to the technology.
Would you consider that worse than what the EU did...or just transactional?
Palestine Action activists cleared of aggravated burglary at Israeli defence firm site
None of the six activists were convicted of any offence over break-in at Elbit Systems factory near Bristol in 2024
Another hammer blow may await starmer, cooper & co. Given what they have done to the peaceful protestors, don't forget why we must never vote for 'changed' labour.
A spokesperson for Defend Our Juries, which has organised rallies opposing the ban on Palestine Action, which took effect on 5 July last year, said the verdicts were “a huge blow to government ministers” who had “tried to portray Palestine Action as a violent group to justify banning it under badly drafted terrorism legislation”.
Amnesty International also said it showed how disproportionate the proscription decision was.
I always found Mandelson to be a creep.
McSweeney quits as PM's chief of staff, saying he takes 'full responsibility' for advising Mandelson appointment
😃 😃 😃

I suspect from the timing of this that there's communications between McSweeney and Mandleson that cannot be spun away. Hopefully enough to consign McSweeey to the dustbin of labour politics.
In a race that's very hard to call, the Greens are now odds on with the bookies to win the Gorton and Denton by election.
He’s lost his closest allies, and if Sarwar calls for him to go it’s probably the end of Starmer.
I cannot think of a single decent replacement. Are there any? Yvette Cooper is the only one I can think of that I have any kind of respect for, but I'm sure the diehard lefties here will give me a million reasons why she's a terrible choice, so that's probably not a good pick...
At this point, the only positive thing they could do it choose a woman or minority just to chose some actual diversity.
Not Lammy though. His brain would rattle in a walnut.
Cooper is more of the same conservatism. Rayner is better but still bad. All the leading names are bad, like Shabana Mahmood. Her flag shagging could be right up your street, though.
Clive Lewis is a decent man but like all decent people these days he probably has no interest in becoming PM.

Yvette cooper is responsible for the arrests of peaceful protestors on terrorism related charges.
She should be sacked from the government not made PM. If that makes me a diehard lefty then so be it.
It is a sad bunch now. Hard to think of anything better than giving Milliband another go. He ha been the best thing about this deeply tragic government
I just want them to beat reform, preferably a proper hiding.

Dunno man, he always had a touch of a young uncle Fester mixed in with Sheldon from The Big Bang for me.
But you are right, he's better than the other candidates. He's not an utter twat, for one.

Nothing peaceful about a man inflicting spinal injuries on a woman (in this case a policewoman) with a sledgehammer.
Except those present in court who actually heard the evidence say that's not what happened.
No-one afaik has ever objected to them being arrested.
The peaceful protesters being dragged from the streets remains a total disgrace

Probably this, but Miliband is another good choice on the basis that he is possibly the only candidate who can placate the centre and left wings of the party.
Says a lot that it's Miliband on R4's Today programme defending Starmer and the government.
