British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

Starmer clearly taking lessons from Irish politicians and refusing to resign

starmer will do do the honorable thing just as soon as there's no other option

He says he's going to lead the party into the next election

"My ancestors fled pogroms, you incite them on refugees"

"My mother didn't fight Mosley's fascists in Cable Street for this"

"My mother fled Germany, you would deport her"

Ms Reeves said: “A closer economic relationship with the EU isn’t about choosing sides but about geography.

“There are three big economic blocks: US, China and Europe. We will always seek every opportunity to grow our economy, and these trading relationships, but ultimately only one of these is on our doorstep, and so the biggest prize is closer integration with Europe.”

It comes days after Labour London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan described reversing Brexit as the “ultimate goal”, while both the chancellor and prime minister have made it clear Brexit will be a dividing line with Nigel Farage’s Reform UK at the next election.

In addition, many now believe that the removal of former Downing Street chief of staff Morgan McSweeney, following the scandal over the hiring of disgraced peer Peter Mandelson despite his known links to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, has removed a major block to reversing Brexit.

Unintended consequences?

If they manage to manouver things so that at the nedxt election reversing brexit is solidly on the agenda then I might even hold my nose and vote for them. Or the one after that.

On what terms would that be now though, after the diebitters trashed the favourable deal we had?

Either way it’s been a hugely harmful act of self destruction.

JFC you people do not get it, do you.

I'll probably prefer the terms to how it was. This time we have to mean it and carry people with on a positive vision of the future.

The bigger problem imo is I don't want us to do the dirty on those we have signed new deals with. I would have near thought it was impossible but trump may have changed things enough so that the EU is able/willing to look at something more encompassing. India where we now both have trade deals is an example.

I'm sure if/when we do rejoin then many like you wont give up either.

Unfortunately we do get it. Every time we see English flags being put up on lamp posts by skinheads or far right videos from Reform inciting hatred of foreigners, we get it.

This is all on you, diebitter, and your horrible ilk.

"ze EU" indeed. Only one step removed from teenage Farage whispering "Gas them all" to Jews.

Oh I will be ok to rejoin if the terms of the rejoin are clear, and there is a national referendum, where the result is abided by.

And I'd even go so far as to say there should be a national referendum every 10-20 years, where the result is binding for a specific period.

But you guys just live in your own little wish bubble. You don't get that labour running on this will be basically handing a massive victory to reform, which will be a catastrophe for the UK. They couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery, and to give them the keys because of remainer fantasies.... ugg.

Will you ever actually grow up?

I agree it needs to be a clear vote.

I'd also agree that if the narrative is that if you don't want to rejoin then you're an ignoracist bigot then it will likely be a disaster.

Growing up involves admitting some responsibility for the predictable outcomes of poor decisions you make.

It's always projection with people like you.

What a truly great idea. Business are known to love political and economic uncertainty.

Legislation in the HoP today would block companies without British owners from donating to parties, to prevent foreign interference in elections.

I'm sure there are many effective ways around this.

I wonder how worried Brexiteers are about this lack of sovereignty, a South African born American citizen trying to use his wealth and status to impose political change on the UK?

The High Court has ruled that the ban of Palestine Action under terrorism legislation is unlawful - but it remains in place for now.

In a massive blow to the Home Office, three senior judges said that while Palestine Action use criminality to promote its aims its activities had not crossed the very high bar to make it a terrorist organisation.

The judges however ruled the ban must remain in place until a further hearing later in February as to what should happen next - including the possibility of a government appeal.

The decision means that while the group has successfully challenged the ban, expressing support for Palestine Action or taking part in its activities remains a serious criminal offence.

How many peaceful protestors were arrested just for holding up banners objecting to what they considered an abuse of terrorism legislation by this disgusting government? How much money and police time was wasted to the extent that even the police felt traumatised by having to drag off clearly peaceful protestors. And some want to make Yvette Cooper PM? She should be thrown out of the government as a minimum.

More Reform lies debunked.

Farage's claims that a million people here don't speak any English is exaggerated by a factor of about six.

And some want to make Yvette Cooper PM? She should be thrown out of the government as a minimum.

Do you remember when Yvette Cooper told us all that Palestine Action had done or planned terrible things that she couldn't tell us about at the time?

Guess what? She still hasn't told us, and the High Court doesn't seem to be swayed. They take us for fools.

Rupert Lowe has announced his new party, Restore Britain, which will hopefully divide the neonazis, racists and cranks.

Reminds me of the Andy Burnham joke.

A neonazi, a racist and a crank walk into a pub. The bartender says, 'Your usual, Jalfrezi?'

Bit touchy on that subject, aren’t we Elracist, the obsessive incel crank up and on this forum at 4.30 every morning?

iykyk

By contrast, Mr Burnham’s plan is a revolution: roll back Thatcherism and restore politics to the heart of economics. Hence his call for electoral reform, abandoning the parliamentary whip system and replacing the House of Lords with an elected senate of nations and regions. A new political settlement, he says, is a precondition to achieve public control of essentials – such as housing and utilities – to reduce costs and support productivity.

hallebloodylujah

Maybe there is still hope

I’ll believe it when I see it. Remember Starmer describing himself as a socialist when in opposition, then as soon as he won the election saying he intended to govern as a Conservative?

These people know very well which people they need to win over.
