Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Mad Max Fury Road (2015)Caught this on tv the other night and it's still pretty awesome, albeit essentially one long car chase, but a great spectacle of sheer excess with some nicely nutty touches to it. About the only quibble I have with it is I still think Tom Hardy was woefully miscast as Max, but other than that it's still a definite yay. Hard to believe it's just over 10 y
Hardy was terrible, Theron was great, all the other actors plus the script are nowhere close to Thunderdome, the action was great, the storm was cool.
Probably the most overrated movie of all time that is still well worth watching. Mystic River is the most overrated movie of all time that actually is great.

The claustrophobia in Iron Lung is well done but that’s about it. Probably would help to have played the game. Guy should not have tried to channel Keanu.

Masterpieces since 2013? Well, the ones I was most WOWed by were Ex Machina, I Am Mother, Joe, and The Black Phone, almost certainly forgetting a couple.
Fury Road is the definition of delivering on a promise. The movie does exactly what it sets out to do and that's part of why it is held in such high regard.
Hardy has never struck me as being grossly miscast. Wikipedia suggests Armie Hammer, Jeremy Renner, Michael Fassbender, Joel Kinnaman, Heath Ledger (rip), Eric Bana, and Eminem (lol) were all considered for Max. Fassbender would have been awesome likely, not sure I can really see any of the rest.
Hamnet was very good. Heavy and intense, excellently acted. Buckley surely has Best Actress on lock.
On a bit of a 90s kick lately
Internal Affairs (1990)
Sleazy thriller in which Internal Affairs investigators Andy Garcia & Laurie Metclaff go up against Richard Gere's corrupt cop. I usually have no real time for Gere as for me he's just Richard Gere in all his movies but he gives a really good performance here, playing against type as ice cold psychopath Dennis Peck.

Smart and quite gripping in parts thriller in which veteran secret service agent, the always reliable Clint Eastwood has to stop a creepy John Malkovitch from assassinating the President

Richard Gere is also in it as an IRA gunman, whose diddley idle dee accent always cracks me up. 😆
Yeah he also popped up in a minor role in Dead Man Walking, which kinda surprised me.

It's been years so I watched Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Still holds up really well. Jim Carrey is CONSTANTLY doing something funny. He's one of the few people who can make kicking a box down a hallway hysterical. This was an interesting time for pre-Friends Courtney Cox, HUGE crush on her back when this came out. I recommend it if you haven't seen it in a while.
One of My Wives is Missing (1976 TV)
A man reports his wife as missing to Inspector Jack Klugman, only to have a complete stranger show up insisting she's his wife, in this pretty ridiculous but rather clever and thoroughly enjoyable twisty-turny TV movie mystery thriller. Was remade 10 years later as Vanishing Act, with Elliot Gould, Margot Kidder and Fred Gwynne. Both are free on youtube and worth checking out, although I preferred the original overall.

funny thing, a 9 & 10 year old just watched that recently and loved it but said they were shocked by how racist it was (their words not mine) and only after further discussion did i learn they were talking about this

I'm in STITCHES after all these years watching him sneak around to the Mission Impossible theme. It probably helps I was a Carrey fan boy because of In Living Color. That show molded much of my comedy tastes growing up and I was so happy Carrey got his own movie. I'll never forget my older brother telling me "That white dude from ILC cannot carry a movie on his own."

What a surprise. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson play middle-aged/Midwest performers who start a Neil Diamond tribute act and fall in love. The music is amazing, the two leads are phenomenal, and the story a little strange lol...but man, I was grinning the whole time. What makes this work is that the movie never makes fun of the impressionists/interpreters - it's a sincere story about older people who are passionate about music and just love to perform. Great movie. It's based on a true story, too!

All things considered I thought she was pretty mellow for being left alone to take care of her daughter. Was she the most responsible mom? Hell no. But considering the stuff she went through: leaky bathroom destroying the floor and creating massive water damage in her home, raising her daughter on her own, having a daughter with a serious medical condition and being completely helpless to support her, and life's stresses leaking into her professional life which definitely affected her job performance. I thought she did a fine job for a woman spiraling out of control. I saw it as an elevated experience that women go through during motherhood, marriage and balancing life while maintaining a career. To me it felt like it gave me a glimpse into what it's like for my wife when she's "overthinking" and cannot turn off her brain. That's something I don't experience. At the end of the day, I have a mostly clear mind and basically zero stress even if life is giving me lemons. It's not that easy for my wife unfortunately. I appreciated the insight and was quite moved by gaining a better understanding of my wife. That's peak art to me.

I actually wasn't crazy about that one. While I found its portrayal of psychopathy very astute and realistic, I found the film itself kinda dull and plodding and although some of my favourite films are non linear, such as Goodfellas, Fight Club, or Pulp Fiction, I actually found its handling of its non linear narrative kinda muddled. At heart I suppose it was a good film, or earnest anyway, but ultimately it just didn't really work for me personally.

Most of my students take film because it fulfills a Gen Ed requirement. Usually only two or three see much beyond the more popular movies.
It really surprises me when they have seen something a bit more "artsy."
I will check out Elephant. I'm guessing no one.

+1 She was a miserable biatch. But that movie wasn't for me as I checked out 47 minutes in. Tried to watch it. Couldn't 😀 I love movies but pretty much none of them in that last 20ish years.
