The 2026 Winter Olympics thread

Was more entreating then I thought. Was expecting more of a marathon to the top of the alpine course but there wouldn't be that much close racing doing that.

You could go pretty crazy on this event with more actual mountaineering. Scrambling on class 4 type rock routes. I assume that is what the stairs are trying to represent but a climbing wall or natural climbing would really make it an all around sport.

What stood out to me was how much longer some athletes needed to change materials in such a short race. 12 seconds instead of 4 in a 3 minute race seems like more than a tiebreaker, almost like shooting in biathlon, and I don't know if it should be. They can copy each other's optimizations now, maybe that mostly fixes it, and maybe they can extend the climb a bit.

Something natural-ish would be more fun for that, I agree.

The lady who won came into both switch stations behind. She switched faster both times, and on the last exchange she came in second and then left the station with an insurmountable lead.

Her story is incredible.

the ESP woman did a transition outside the transition that is an automatic DQ

they pretty much have bronze locked up but appears its ghana be a DQ

wow only a 3 second penalty so ESP still gets the bronze

I suppose I should say the Canadians curled very well,
but I'm gonna say the Americans stunk out the sheet.

Yeah the women kinda stunk. Their coach didn't seem to be that helpful either.

I'm still gonna guess once AI solves curling the strategy changes drastically

I don't know anything about curling other than the basic rules and scoring . Has the strategy evolved significantly at any point?

I would think often the best strategist isn't necessary a great curler themselves. So is a coach calling the shots?

They can talk to the coach when the other team's clock is running. Seemed like they only chatted a little bit at those times, though.

Wait, Canada lost to us in hockey again? lol indeed! USA!

Well it was fun anyways. The local casino opened the bar at 5am for the game and maybe 300 people were packed around the sports bar watching the game and drinking in the morning hours. Would've been a big party if Canada won. All the major bars downtown got special licensing to open at 5am for the game.
