British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

Same thing happened under Obama, who called off the whole plan as a result. It affects Fairford, Akrotiri and Diego Garcia. Without those bases, US long-range bomber and tanker operations get complicated.

They weren't used by trump last time.

They weren't used by trump last time.

No, but that was a one-shot thing with a very small number of very long-range bombers plus in-theatre fighter support, backed by US-based and in-theatre tankers. Which worked for that mission at that scale, but for a big and sustained operation it's trickier without those bases. It could be done, it's just trickier.

Sure. I suspect netanyahu is gearing up to be a lot more involved this time.

Also afaics starmer hasn't refused to let them use the bases. If trump really needs them then I somehow suspect an excuse will be found - nukes nukes nukes, secret information, 31 minutes. we know the drill

It's like his whole family secretly despised him because he was his mummy's over-indulged favourite and now she's gone they want him buried (hopefully).

nah, they're just tossing him out there (to get a slap on the wrist, probably) to save their own asses

hopefully it doesn't work, and yall burn the entire thing down

Starmer finally growing a pair and telling Trump he can’t use UK mainland air bases as a launch pad for strikes on Iran.

What is the issue with Trump using UK mainland bases as a launch pad - I thought we all wanted to help the protestors overthrow the regime?

I think the US should offer asylum to white Britons on the basis of racial discrimination. Seems like it would be a win-win. The people that would sign up for such a program you all would consider white racist losers anyways, so good riddance to bad rubbish. And the US would gain people that would actually appreciate coming here. Unlike most of the recent immigrants we have

...You have to be trolling with this.

Almost every one of his posts itt are trolling, probably as hurt pride after years of us all laughing at Trump. Just ignore him. If they're longer than one or two sentences I don't even bother to read them.

Pseudo-pollster turned Reform by-election candidate Matthew Goodwin was accused of sexual harrassment by a young woman working at GB News (where he was also employed).

Farage was informed of the serious complaint but went ahead and approved Goodwin's nomination anyway.

A number of sources have told the Guardian that they were aware of the woman’s complaint against Goodwin and that GB News had undertaken an inquiry into the complaint.

One source at the broadcaster said: “She was very upset at the time, and her colleagues were upset on her behalf that she was so distressed by the situation.”

What a shocker that another far right weirdo has turned out to be a sex criminal.

Oxbridge liberal media are now coming out and calling for people to have sympathy for the Pedo on the grounds that he’s a father and “has children”.

His youngest child is 36 ffs.

Meanwhile the Streeting Trial, the Mengele-style puberty-blocker experiment on children as young as eight, who were going to be paid a £500 bribe each by the clinicians responsible-- talk about sweets from a stranger-- has been 'paused' by the regulator due to serious ethical concerns that the Secretary of State was cheerfully ignoring.

I hadn't realised it was his andynesses birthday yesterday

I wonder if initially he though it was a prank - that's my cheerful thought of the day

Lord Mandelson arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office

A short while ago Peter Mandelson was seen being led away from his London home by police officers.

oh dear what a shame

Came to post the same thing.

Yeeehaaaa!

Heh.

Lol at Starmer agreeing to release documents now that Mandelson's been arrested, like he didn't know what a wrong'un he was beforehand. I wonder will he ultimately step down over this.

Surely Starmer has to go now having selected him as ambassador to the US?

It would probably be better for the party if he did

Mandelson is claiming that the sudden arrest was because someone tipped off the Mets that he was planning to flee the country.

“Despite previous agreements between police and the legal team over a voluntary interview in early March, police arrested me because they claimed the lord speaker received information that I was about to flee to the British Virgin Islands and take up permanent residence abroad, leaving Reinaldo” – his husband – “my family, home and Jock” – his dog – “behind me.

“I need hardly say, complete fiction. "

Ok, so you were taking your husband with you.

He issued this criticism at 4am. The sense of panic is palpable. Even the plethora of funny handshakes that have probably taken place might not be enough to save him from a humiliating trial.

If the Daily Mail backs Reform at the next GE, it will be the first time the paper hasn't endorsed the Tory party since Mosley's British Union of Fascists.

At last. Oxford St is to be pedestrianised.

Labour beaten by reform in by-election

oh and by some party they didn't notice were running. 😃

Another nail in the Starmer coffin, hopefully.
