Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.

Each year I wonder how the Oscars, a celebration of movies, have such appallingly bad writing.
It's been 10 or 15 years since I even thought about the Oscars? Used to be appointment viewing but todays movies just SUCK and Hollywood long ago ran out of ideas. I saw about half(?) of this years nominees and they all were pretty damn near unwatchable.
The ceremony has become too careful and toned down, and as a result isn't that enjoyable. I did find it funny and also classless to pretty quickly play off and cut out the Original Song winners speech, meanwhile giving a 10 minute bit to the Bridesmaids cast that was not at all funny.
Pretty much chalk on all the awards outside of Best Actor.
Still think Leo deserved it.
Speaking of Leo he is pretty much an all time great. Filmography is insane and has been a part of so many great films. With some of the greats starting to pass away it really cements his legacy for me.
See the short film, The Singers, on Netflix. It's terrific. Also tied for first place for Academy Award.

Predator: Badlands just didn't do it for me, but I think I am spoiled on what makes a great fight scene (more on this later). Going to be interesting seeing the reactions of non-readers that were really hyped about Paul's ascension at the end of the previous film. My brother loves the first two movies and has no idea what's coming, lol.

How was there a tie? I dont remember that ever happening
It's happened I think 4 times before? Most famously in the late '60s when best actress was tied between Katherine Hepburn for the Lion in Winter and Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl
Watched Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein last night, and I finally think I've realized what is it about his films that don't quite do it for me. They are all gorgeous to look at. However, the characters all seem to tell you exactly what the themes of the movies are. There's very little depth, it's all surface. "You're the monster, Victor." Well, no sh*t lol.
Country & Blood should’ve either tied both Picture & Director, or probably more accurately, split ‘em, with PTA getting Director
Latter featured a truly scary (to dorky suburban junior high white boys in 1979) heel turn from Bill “Superfoot” Wallace.
Today, I watched The Banshees of Inisherin again, I part for the locations and in part for the great performances from Brendan Gleason, Barry Keoghan, Kerry Condon, and Colin Farrell. Keoghan has a smaller part, but you will remember his line--"Well there's goes that dream"--for a long time
I'm surprised some times how little I remember from the first I've seen a film to seeing it a few years later. I completely forgot about the crone who predicts two deaths near the end of the film. (And there are two.)
The story is rather simple. Two friends meet to go to the pub every day at 2:00. This time the oldest doesn't answer the door. When the two do meet at the pub, the older one tells the younger he doesn't want to be friends with him any longer.
From there on, all sorts of complications ensue. (Won't spoil them.)
The movie is filmed on Achill Island and Inishmore, one of the Aran Islands.
A couple years ago, I was able to go to Inishmore. The house where Farrell lives was built for the movie on Inishmore, and a couple scenes featured another location on the island. Here's a couple pics I took on Inishmore.

I didn't fully understand what was going on in Project Hail Mary at times. They cram in a lot of sciency stuff at high speed. Still quite fun though. It can be enjoyed as a 'human meets cute alien' ET type movie, although there is more to it than that. Gosling is charming, Sandra Huller is predictably excellent
The line about the aliens not understanding radiation or relativity irked me. Um, what, how the **** are you managing to travel through space without understanding those incredibly fundamental things. That was silly.
I'd probably enjoy Ireland, but wouldn't want to be disrespectful to my ancestors who spent so much time and effort getting away from it and coming to America. Maybe I could compromise: I could go for a visit, but piss on it at every opportunity.

I loved Ireland. I found the church where my great grandfather was baptized in 1853. Golf was fantastic, too. Oh, and fresh Guinness. I've been the past two summers and would definitely go again.
One of my dad's favorite movies (he was English my mom Irish) was The Quiet Man, so when I was a kid I watched all the movies I could that he liked. Recommend Harvey and Call Northside 777, his two favorites.

Believe it or not, this is one of the best John Woo movies made anywhere. Shootouts are here subtle for a John Woo flick--they’re just as imaginative and entertaining, but not quite as histrionic. All the signature moves are retained. Plus, Affleck’s engineer does a great job straddling the roles of a cinematically-mandated action hero and a Philip K. Dickian everyday schulb.
Contains the three building blocks of monumental cinema:

Hot chicks in party dresses [x]*
Stands the test of time. Check it out!
*(Uma Thurman doesn't need a party dress. Uma Thurman could be wearing sweats and still out hot any hot chick in a party dress.)
