British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

It's literally the whole of Reform, from the bottom to the top:

Journalist, "Will you apologise to Grenfell victims over Simon Dudley's comments?"

Farage, "I'll apologise for everything in the past couple of hundred years, absolutely"

"This is modern journalism isn't it. Apologise. Apologise. Apologise"

This is so sad. A once great country no more. Even immigrants are complaining about the immigration problem. I feel bad for you guy’s and I hope it’s not as bad as it looks. I’d love to hear your take on the situation. I’m all for immigration if the people coming in assimilate and treat their neighbors with respect.

Something I don't understand is that Britain actually has a very high defense budget. It is listed #5-6 in the world, around half of Russia's budget any given year, and over double Israel's.

And yet it has no capacity to project power anywhere, not even in the English Channel. What is Britain spending its military budget on, that it gets so little bang for its buck?

kier Starmer is a wanker

Starmer said today the Israeli strikes on Lebanon are wrong and should stop, and the Israeli government are very naughty and shouldn't keep doing it.

Starmer just doesn’t want to be killed by his anti Jew citizens.

This country is a joke and is no longer taken seriously.

He feels this very strongly

It so wierd, even when he is on the right side he says something really stupid

He argued that government policies such as investing in renewable energy, strengthening workers' rights and removing the two-child benefit cap would help prepare the country for increased global instability.

All good things he should build on but wtf do the later two have to do with global instability. If he really went strong on renewable energy, reducing dependence on foreign corporations and European cooperation he could become a real prime minister. Plus the no brainer labour policies like workers rights, removing the cap etc.

Definition of lip service. He has no ideas and no interest in improving people's lives and will do what his handlers tell him. I'm becoming more and more convinced he's a plant.

But he is quite good at doing what his handlers tell him while laying about it.

Pretty sure shooting drones down is better in a multitude of ways than watching them explode in populated areas.

Shooting down drones is clearly a defensive action.

Not if you're only shooting down missiles from one side of the conflict.

Are you serious?

Are you serious about supporting the downing of missiles from one side being attacked but not from the other? Doesn't seem you're as against involvement in this war as you claimed to be.

British assets are defending the British sovereign bases in Cyprus, but mainly defending the Gulf states, which have not attacked Iran but are being attacked by the IRGC. The British are obviously not defending Iran, which is an enemy of this country, and it would be more than slightly weird if the Iranians requested such defence from London.

Sir Keir Starmer has shelved his Chagos Islands deal amid worsening relations with Donald Trump after the US failed to formally confirm its approval.

Trump had urged Starmer to scrap the deal despite earlier expressing support for the treaty. In January the president called the plan an "act of total weakness".

UK government officials have said they are not entirely abandoning the agreement - which would hand sovereignty of the British territory to Mauritius - but have run out of time to pass legislation before Parliament is dissolved in the coming weeks.

However, a new Chagos bill is not expected to feature in the King's Speech in mid-May.

It is understood the UK has still not received a formal exchange of letters from the US - a legal necessity required for the treaty to be enacted.

I'd say you have a brain as smooth as a curling stone, but I don't want to be unfair to the stone.

What does your imaginary girlfriend say?

A group of Labour MPs is to propose a series of new policies to defeat rightwing populism, including a Swiss-style deal with the EU, lower electricity prices, a robust defence of climate policies and a reduced dependence on Washington.

Among those contributing to a new collection of essays is the former cabinet minister Anneliese Dodds, who calls for a fundamental reappraisal of the UK-US relationship, saying alliances should be based on “a hardheaded assessment of which nations share our values and goals.”

Does the UK have a 25th amendment type solution to get Starmer out? I know guy’s like Tommy Robinson and Mayer Tousi would be front runners on the right. Somebody needs to get in here and clean up this mess.

As some idiot was pointing out that was what pro-EUers should have been arguing about.

It's possible trump has changed the conversation enough to find a way back.

Vote of confidence in parliament is sufficient among other ways for the labour party to do it. It's easy to get rid of PMs if they really want to.
