Netflix "Watch Instantly"
I just recently rejoined Netflix and was pleased to see they have added a "Watch Instantly" feature where you can stream
I haven't checked out The Shield - but @goofyballer used to claim it was better than The Wire.Season 2 of Southland seems to be finding it's legs through episode 3 or 4. "You Can't Save Everyone" I think was the name of the episode - and it's the first time I felt like they successfully conveyed a point outside of a linear narritive. I've enjoyed the show to this point, and a
I think The Wire is #1 but The Shield is a top 5 type show imo.
It's a shame you can't just ignore people in selected threads only. Definitely need to remember that txdome's tv taste is suspect at best.
This reminds me. I really need to rewatch The Shield. Loved it first time around and now a binge would b awesome 😀
Don't forget about her as the E.T. in the sequel. Plenty of chicks have big tits with busted faces.

Tx has been cranking up the heat on the takes recently. The Sydney Sweeny take was so bad it's haunted me for the last day or two. I literally found myself thinking deeply about why she's so polarizing. I though it was just women hating to hate, but the TX showed up and put my worldview in the blender.

i dunno 😃
I watched southland recently and it was decent enough , it did go down a bit in series 4 and 5 but the cliffhanger was a f**cker cos it was cancelled
The shield i remember i watched it while it aired i cant remember how it ended etc so started a re-watch 3 nights ago and i think maybe its aged badly because i turned it off on episode s1e3 and i might go back it another time but not for now.
Also the i didnt find the wire great either - i mean it was ok but theres no way (in my mind) that the wire is anywhere near the sopranos or breaking bad or a few others i could name
I have tried The Wire twice and just can't get through it
Same. But it might have been three times for me.
I kept thinking I simply can not be this far out of touch with all the people raving about this show. It turns out that I can.
So how far did you two make it?
I felt the same way when I started as the show requires quite a bit of trust and patience. If you make it through the first season, and don't care for it - then the show just isn't for you (and that's ok).
If you made it through 3 or 4 episodes and felt like it was a bit of a slog, but usually like police procedurals - then keep going as the show takes quiet a while to crescendo.
That said, once you make it through season 1, they throw you into season 2, and you're like "WTF IS THIS ****?" Season 2 takes even longer to get going than season 1, but by the end of season 2, you realize what they're doing.
If you make it through season 2, you're rewarded with seasons 3 and 4, which are absolutely fantastic. Then you get to season 5, which gets a bit outlandish - but it's tough to land the plane without a few bumps.
In other news - I just got to the episode of Soutland where they just switch out the cuban partner for a different "that guy" actor. Always strange and distracting when shows do that.
I just read a season summary and I'm sure I made it thru 2 seasons. I'm guessing I bailed in season 3.
I don't think I ever got through the first episode. Nothing about it hooked me at all.

Sounds like you gave it a fair shot and it just wasn't for you.
The Wire takes a while to build. I think having that expectation going in helps with the pacing. Going in with the expectation that it's the greatest cop show of all time after friends and the internet hype it up beyond all reasonability is like going to a symphony expecting an EDM festival.
If you ever want to revisit - maybe that helps, however there's a lot of great stuff to watch these days.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind if temptation ever hits me again.
I accept the reality that people have different tastes in everything, but here's my $0.02
The best description I ever read on The Wire called it "a visual novel", so not making it through 1 episode is like picking up a 1200 page novel like Shogun and deciding after reading 20 pages it's not for you.
Not a criticism, I couldn't get past 50 pages of "Crime and Punishment" and I was an English major.
Ha, I tried to read Crime and Punishment. I think I got thru about 200 pages and realized there is zero chance I can finish this book.

Good description and I totally understand how The Wire is not everyone's cup of tea and yeah, comparing to a novel is a good way to put it. But Crime and Punishment is also an elite novel 😉

Somebody here on 2+2 probably 20+ years ago summed it up great:
"I've never felt this respected as a viewer"
I got through The Wire a few years ago. It is an all-time great, but I would never rewatch it again.
The Wire is both good and tremendously overrated.
The novel comparison might be apt, but I both liked The Wire's first episode right away (the couch setting is tremendous imo), and have rewatched the show. I think I've seen it 3 times in ~15 years? A The Wire rewatch is still miles better than, for instance, sons of anarchy for me.
I would argue that The Wire is rightfully and correctly rated - as opposed to say The Sopranos which is overrated, imho -, but surprisingly, given that these types of shows that are slow paced and more analytical tend to be overlooked...
