A lot of easy listening would have been at the bottom, that one just hit the sweet spot.

xander any reason why you're making us click open new tabs like peasants instead of embedding it directly into the post?

You're the only one who embedded videos in your entry. Links is the norm it would appear.

Plus, what's wrong with new tabs?

It's 1 press either way to get to listen to the song.

Frank Mills - Peter Piper
https://youtu.be/4VisjVQ1NUk?si=EGp8tuLv...

This was so close to being first on merit alone. It's really lovely. Just the right level of fun, light, bouncy and melodic for what I'm liking right now. Church organ and strings coming in to compliment the piano and drums are spot on. Great song, well done.

Sorry, I missed the reveal. However, whoo-hoo for first in a category!

Frank Mills is best known for "Music Box Dancer", which is similar, but I have always preferred "Peter Piper". He has a lot of instrumental pieces. I almost went with "Ballet Russe".

Just completed listen 1 of the next 21 songs.

Gonna do another couple of complete listenthroughs before I even think about 3rd best and rankings.

Been on holiday, but I am back on this as of right now...

What a coincidence.

It's time to reveal some stuff.

So I'm going to review each set of songs and declare the 3rd best for each entry and then they'll face of against each other at a slightly later date.

Rickroll

CHVRCHES

https://youtu.be/4Eo84jDIMKI?si=pTaw2uSi...

Leave a Trace - fun poppy song. I'm sure I've heard it before, but it could just be because it's so poppy that it feels that way. Good voice, good beat and synthy sound.

https://youtu.be/TTOuVP0iYQs?si=5b5S2App...

Under the Tide - Different singer. Still poppy and I've got an inkling I've heard it before. Interesting beginning and build, just to fake out and go back to the beginning. Second time round the build goes somewhere, but doesn't go very far. Definitely like this less than Leave a Trace. It's not bad, just a bit mid and goes nowhere other than round and round.

https://youtu.be/zEFsh5yCZRk?si=ImL7vI2v...

Never Ending Circles - Back to the first singer who I prefer. Not so much the voice, but the voice fits better with the vibe. Same sort of synthy beat that we're used to but this one leads to somewhere more interesting a lot more quickly. This song is definitely better than Under the Tide. I'd have to listen to it again to rank it and Leave a Trace, but Im not going to because I don't have to.

3rd best song CHVRCHES- Under the Tide.

tchaz - Tim Maia

Bom Senso … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdqM_oFR...

Bom Senso - Latin Soul? I've never heard of this artist before, but like it. Good voice, good instrumentation and a good hook and electric guitar lick. No idea what he's singing about, but I like it. This is a strong start

Que Beleza … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nq_AOktd...

Que Beleza - Slower start to this one and the distant sounding vocals are hiding how good his voice is. Still an above average song. Guitar lick doesn't hit as well this time. Sounds lmao bit Santana-esque. Is that a good thing? I'll let you decide. Oh and the song has now ended.

O Caminho Do Bem … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwUGJXm0...

O Caminho Do Bem - A bit slower and less gripping. Not a fan of the spoken word stuff. Maybe that's my fault for not speaking Portuguese. Guess this is the more chilled song that you are meant to just absorb. I'm not there with it and it's definitely weakest of the 3 based on the 4 listens so far.

3rd Best Song Tim Maia - O Caminho Do Bem

IBeDrummin - Sigur RΓ³s

Ok, I know this band for Hiphopiola or something similar to that. It's a great song, they're Icelandic and I know nothing se by them.

Sigur RΓ³s - NΓ½ BatterΓ https://youtu.be/TU9T3T2pmjQ

ok, it has the same sound as the band but it's very slow and unassuming. Builds slightly after almost 2 minutes. Some lyrics after 2 mins 30 which definitely adds to the song, but I'll be honest it's from a low starting point for me. Would it mean more if I understood it? Probably not. We're at 4 mins and my enjoyment has not really risen much. Ok 4 mins 30 and we've got some drums. 5 minutes stronger lyrics and drums together. It's definitely getting better but still I'm sorry to say that it's not great for me. I csn understand someone loving this, but it's just not my cup of tea. Perhaps if I listened to it another 10 times I'd love it too, but I'm not going to do that.

Sigur RΓ³s - Untitled #1 (Vaka) https://youtu.be/b8ByoWG1iGo

Untitled #1 (Vaka) - this was very meh to me the first couple of listens, but it grew on me. Nice piano and tortured strings/vocals opening. Melodic and pretty. It still takes 2 minutes to actually get anywhere different to this but I'm enjoying it, not just waiting. Lyrics at 2 mins 30 are nice and fitting with the rest of the song. I'm enjoying this and don't care if it goes anywhere else. It eventually does at 5 mins, which is really nice. Overall great song. Much better than Ny batteri for me.

Sigur RΓ³s - StarΓ‘lfur https://youtu.be/7fEUUnXDnbk

Staralfur- Oh I know this one. This one's great. Nice sound, nice sounding lyrics even if I can't understand them. Good piano hook, then guitar and drums/fireworks. All round enjoyed. Then some more strings. Best of the 3 for sure.

3rd best song - Ny batteri

eyebooger - Beach Bunny

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7i6JDMg...

Good Girls - Wow, this is a great bolt of energy from second 1. Fun, poppy disposable, good voice, good music. 2 minutes in and the song every so slightly changes. Ramps up and then goes ti the reprise. Pretty standard but very good pop song with all the needed elements.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsLLmb1Y...

Clueless - Ooh, I like this one too but in a slightly different way. Still standard pop but still very well made. I can't put too many into describe it, but I like it. I think better than the first song. I'm also liking these 3 minute 30 songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCLZaiAA...

Vertigo - Straight into it again. Still poppy but with a bit more of a rock and roll twist eith some of the music. I like this band, great band, no nonsense or pretense, just good well made pop made. This is also better than the first song.

3rd best song - Good Girls.

Falconhoof - Guided by Voices

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjZ6HL-8...,

Game of Pricks - I know this band but only song Tractor Rape Chain. They sound a lot like the Beatles to me. The classic instiments played in the classic ways, even to the extent of the low fi production. I know they're American but even the voices are Beatles reminiscent to me. Great song by the way. Really doesn't overstay it's welcome.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKhLNZQr...,

Blimps go 90 - Same sort of sound as before, but this doesn't feel like a single, more like an album filler sort of song. Inoffensive but not great. Definitely the worse of the songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZayXKRsr...

My valuable hunting knife - Back to the good stuff. Driving guitar throughout and vocals that complement but don't match it. Another 2 minute banger.

3rd best song - Blimps go 90.

FerencL - The Blue Shadows

https://youtu.be/8amvps0uSEg?si=v5oKZvGR...

Think on it - Country and Western. Nice. A genre I don't dislike but don't really know anything about. Decent enough ballad. Grows slightly on relisten but never really gets up there to the heights of a great song.

https://youtu.be/K_Fb0jgA0-Q?si=DYbX-CXF...

Why oh Why - ok, this doesn't sound like the same as the previous song. It's better than the previous song. Sorta like the band who sang "wake up little suzie". Just looked them up and they're "alt country" (something I've never heard of) and also they're a lot more modern than I expected. I like this song. Still not amazing, but very pleasant and I find my head nodding.

https://youtu.be/zv7CCUJhg3c?si=eGJASqJ6...

Deliver me - Back to traditional Country if you ask me. This one isn't doing it for me so much. I think I'm going to have to listen to Think on it again to figure out which is better of the 2. Ok I've listened to it again...

3rd best song - Deliver me.

Eric- The Corries

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lFHamW...t...

The Braes o' Killiecrankie - I don't think I like this type of music outside of a very specific set of circumstances. I'm on holiday in Scotland, I'm 3 drinks in and these guys are playing live. Outside of that I don't think I can appreciate it. It's competent, but just doesn't hit me in the feels even slightly.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8cPitx...c...

The Massacre of Glencoe - This is ever so slightly better. Feels a bit more polished than the last one. But still not my thing I'm afraid.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Vyx1xe...N...

Flower of Scotland - Think this might be the best of the 3. Bit more of an anthem. I could possibly envisage more scenarios where this would fit. Perhaps at a sporting event or a protest to try to stop the government closing the tin works. Also would be good to hear live at a pub.

3rd best song - The Braes o' Killiecrankie

So the songs that are going to be ranked for round 2:

CHVRCHES- Under the Tide

Tim Maia - O Caminho Do Bem

Sigur RΓ³s - NΓ½ BatterΓ

Beach Bunny - Good Girls

Guided by Voices - Blimps go 90

The Blue Shadows - Deliver Me

The Corries - The Braes o' Killiecrankie

Please let me know if my 3rd best matches your 3rd best.

Please let me know if my 3rd best matches your 3rd best.

Yes for mine. Was certain I wanted to use the other two songs, but flipped a four or five-way coin for the last one.

your 3rd is my favorite from that band πŸ˜€

would have submitted this instead of neverending circles as my 3rd one if i put more thought into it

You were spot on with The Blue Shadows.
I put on Deliver Me because it's probably their best liked song (but not by me).
I also thought it might get a boost because it has a video with Billy Cowsill on lead vocal. Turns out that The Cowsills were totally unknown in England as compared to their Stateside popularity (they even made a TV show about them called The Partridge Family). So, in England it would be Billy Who?
Their 2nd LP had their 2 best songs (Why Oh Why being one of them) but it was hated by their fans because it wasn't "alt-country".

3rd tchaz Neojiba – Tico Tico no FubΓ‘https://youtu.be/SFRR3wdmDqE?si=jW0xfeLb...I liked this one a lot. It's lively and playful. I don't listen to this sort of music at all which is one of the main reasons to tuna walrus. It seems like you took it as a personal challenge to go off the beaten track for this one and it paid off. I don't really have much more to say abou

Glad you liked it. The group is basically the state (of Bahia) youth orchestra. The song is very well known...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tico-Tico_... ... and I guess more that 100 years old at this point.

A bit tough to understand the lyrics. I'm not sure entirely necessary. However, if you have a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Maia_R... and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rational_C... you'll see that lots of it was tied up in/about this variant religion, based on some kind of "rational" view of spirituality. (I'm not sure the use of the word "cult" in the articles is helpful ... I imagine it's a translation from the Portuguese "culto" which would be a normal word for any religion.) [I can talk more about this in a completely inexpert way if necessary.]

Yes, I'm generally in favour of more upbeat things, so O Caminho Do Bem would be _my_ least favourite. Que Beleza may be the best known now in Brazil. O Caminho Do Bem was on a Gilles Petersen "Best of Brasil" double CD in the mid 2000s, so maybe better known in the UK.

Tim Maia is a "big" name in Brazililan music....principally for the 1970s...but nothing truely dies in Brazilian music, so ...

Chvrches is certainly a pretty interesting choice here. :applause:
