Did you know? When exwife #2 and I were in SF we asked filthy how it was to walk across the golden gate bridge and he said it was terrible, awful, noisy, chaotic, he'd rather jump off it than walk across it.

We did it and it was fine.

11 is maybe...

the train
friends couch
uncomfy bed
nicely carpeted floor
passenger seat in a car

sunburn is no joke. he said sunny, and with nothing at all to mitigate to sunburn. he used three ****ing words!!!! he had other words to mitigate sunburn and didn't use them. that person is getting sunburned sleeping on the sunny beach with no protection at all from the sun

it's almost as bad as falling asleep in the sunny desert with a towel.

hell, i'd rather fall asleep in the desert than a beach with all those people running around and screaming and throwing balls and playing shitty music

totally forgot about that lmao

to be fair though i'd rather jump off than the bridge than do a lot of things

but yeah I can't stand walking feet away from that traffic. it's literally walking next to a freeway! and usually with howling winds, but also really nice views

sometimes you are so close that if you just reached your arm out, a car going 65mph would hit your arm... and it's non stop traffic.

i've walked across dozens of times. back when I was too young to stand up for myself.

as an adult I rode my bike across a few times, but with headphones, and that was nice.... also the bicycle side is the side with the view of the ocean and mountains. I much prefer that to the pedestrian side of the city

the only way I could this being lower is if Dr z made a terrible clue. which is possible. it happens.

or his clue was fine cuz he knew his team wouldn't think about the sunburn part.

but mentioning "sunny" and nothing else completely indicates sunburn to me

I'm on Team Lower. A towel on a beach is a perfectly reasonable place to sleep, sunburns notwithstanding. I'd consider even a 12 or 13 to at least be unsafe or uncomfortable but a beach towel isn't that.

a beach towel with no sun protection is unsafe.

I think the towel is there specifically to let you know it's nice tho.

right totally agree the towel is a modifier for maybe +3ish

but if I were to sleep on the beach with no umbrella, and no sunscreen... I mean you'd be way better off sleeping under the towel than on top of it

sunburn is no joke

anyway..... I'm passionate that sunburn makes this a bad place to sleep. but I'm often wrong. and I'm outvoted 2 to 1.

i've said my piece. you've both listened, and if I didn't change your minds already, then I'm not going to. so you outvote me 2 to 1

-3ish

So sunny beach would have to be >=15 for us to go higher.

There could be an umbrella. Starting to sound pretty cozy right.

there is no umbrella

right got the thing backwards... just meant a towel makes it about 3 points to the better place to sleep side

I agree there is no umbrella I was being optimistic.

I'll wait for a final word from bolt, I have nothing else.

you'd be way better off sleeping on a rainy beach than a sunny beach! as long as it was warm, and the rain wasn't too bad

WHAT

No one else in the WORLD thinks like that.

Is a cat going to curl up on a towel in the rain? Heck no. In the sun? Heck yes! And cats don't get sunburn.

I'm still on lower. I realize that the sun is probably a modifier to make it less comfortable, but it could well be that a cloudy beach is an 8 and a sunny beach is a 9.

I also accept that many people, including filthy, would never ever nap on a beach, but it's still fairly common to see a handful of rappers on just about any beach.

I gather that filthy also wouldn't lay on a towel, awake, to get a tan for any extended amount of time, but on any sunny beach that's exactly what people are doing, with or without sunscreen.

lower

i've fallen asleep in the sun and been horrifically sunburned.

it happens. i'd guess 30% of people who go to a sunny beach get sunburned, and they aren't even falling asleep.

I'm thinking like kauai

i've enjoyed some absolutely beautiful rainy weather on beaches in Kauai. gentle, warm, sporadic light rain. paradise

tom Hanks in castaway would probably be better off falling asleep on the beach in the rain rather than under the sun. even if it was raining kinda hard

probably better to be wet and cold than sunburned, possibly brutally sunburned on half your body

have you ever had a bad sunburn? like 4 hours under the hot sun with no protection whatsoever. most people go to the hospital for that

I have had canoe trip sunburn. I have never been to the hospital for it. You just put the lotion on it and try not to move or touch anything for a few days.

I challenge Dr z to come to CA sleep on a towel on a sunny beach.

UV Index 3–5 (Moderate): Damage can start in 30–45 minutes without protection. UV Index 6–7 (High): Unprotected skin may burn in 15–25 minutes. UV Index 8–10 (Very High): Burn risk starts as quickly as 10–15 minutes. UV Index 11+ (Extreme): Skin can burn in under 10 minutes.

AI Overview
Three hours of unprotected sun exposure, particularly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., poses a high risk of severe sunburn, dehydration, and potential sun poisoning (fever, chills, nausea). Skin damage can occur in as little as 10-15 minutes.

Altitude and Environment: Sand, water, and snow reflect UV rays, accelerating burn times.

Recommended Precautions for UV 10

Because damage occurs so quickly at this level, experts recommend the following:

Minimize exposure during peak midday hours.Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) at least 15 minutes before going outside.

Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.

Seek shade whenever possible, as "unprotected" refers to any skin not covered by clothing or sunscreen.

sure... sounds like a great place to nap!
