Ted Turner died today. As this obituary makes clear, whatever you think about him, you probably are correct. He was all the things at various times:
"Terrible Ted" one of the most fascinating Americans of the past 100 years imo.
As a kid I was a huge baseball fan, and never even knew who he was until he purchased the Atlanta Braves in the mid-1970's.
(I'm an 'original' Padres fan; I grew up in Oceanside and when I was 11 my Dad took me to a Padre game in their inaugural season [1969].)
I have a friend who had to attend a business meeting with Ted Turner on Turner's private plane. This was a long time ago. My friend said the plane was absolutely filthy, like a 12 year old boy's bedroom.
I had an opportunity to listen to him speak once and missed it, still kicking myself.

I saw Oscar Goodman speak many years ago. This was back during the time when he was mainly known as a very high profile mob lawyer and just before he became mayor of Las Vegas.
He was very entertaining.
The TV show start times at :05 and :35 past the hour always threw me off. But it was awesome during the WWF and WCW heyday when WWF would end I could flip over to WCW for the last 5 minutes.

The least entertaining I ever heard was James Earl Jones. Totally incomprehensible.

Around 1988 I attended a lecture and Q&A by former World Chess Champion Boris Spassky. A very kind and humble man. (Aside of course from being one of the all-time great chess players.)
