WNBA 2026 Season Thread
I live in a multi-unit complex. I share a wall in my living room with the living room of my next-door neighbor.
Several
Home teams are 6-18 so far this year, and 2 of those wins were late last night, it's been a weird start to the season.
With every roster more or less being totally up in the air until 2 weeks before the season teams are taking time to get up and running.
Yeah weird start. Can you tell me how the Liberty's whole team starts the seaosn injured? They have a whole offseason to get healthy and they all get hurt? Weird.
And Napheesa starts the season on the bench for minnesota.
And sadly.. Still no fights.
not sure when the aces play marina mabry, but she and chen used to date. last time they played(2 years ago) there was def bad blood and chen fouled her hard.
there is a ton of behind the scenes dating drama. another thing that the w has over the NBA. but they mostly keep it behind the scenes. it's hard to get the info
I really hope that chen can keep it together mentally though. she can be a world class player.
I don't even know who the aces have on their team, but with a healthy aja, and "a game" chen.. that alone is hard to beat. it's gotta be better than any other teams top two players.
There’s actually a player named and chen it’s very funny to think this guy is obsessed with her
⚾ Game Analysis: San Francisco Giants vs. Athletics (May 17, 2026) β Under 9.5 vs. Over 9.5
PART I β DETAILED STATISTICAL AND SUBSTANTIVE ANALYSIS
1. Introduction and Series Context
The San Francisco Giants (19-27, .413) face the Athletics (23-22, .511) on May 17, 2026, at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. This is the third and deciding game of the series. On Friday, the Athletics won 5-2; on Saturday, the Giants won 6-4.
The odds on under 9.5 and over 9.5 are identical at -110. The total line is set at 9.5 runs, which is higher than the MLB season average (approximately 8.7 runs per game).
The purpose of this analysis is to determine which side of the total β under or over β offers higher expected value.
2. Starting Pitchers β The Heart of the Matchup
Adrian Houser (San Francisco Giants) β Right-Hander
Record: 1-4
ERA: 5.79
WHIP: 1.55 (estimated)
In his last start (May 13 against the Dodgers), Houser delivered a quality outing: 5.2 innings, 2 earned runs, a win. His earlier starts were disastrous β May 6 against San Diego: 4.1 innings, 5 earned runs.
His advanced metrics are alarming. His xFIP of 4.85 is slightly better than his ERA, but still poor. His K/9 is only 6.2, and his BB/9 is 3.9. Houser doesn't strike out many batters and walks too many.
Key weakness: Houser has a HR/9 of 1.35. At hitter-friendly Sutter Health Park (dimensions: 330 to left, 325 to right, 400 to center, park factor 121 for home runs), this is a recipe for disaster.
Jeffrey Springs (Athletics) β Left-Hander
Record: 3-3
ERA: 4.22
WHIP: 1.28
In his last start (May 13 against St. Louis), Springs lost 6-4 but wasn't terrible: 5.1 innings, 4 earned runs. Earlier, on May 3 against Cleveland, he won 7-1 after 6 innings with 1 earned run.
His advanced metrics are solid β xFIP of 3.95, K/9 of 8.7, BB/9 of 2.8. Springs has good control and can strike batters out.
Springs is returning from Tommy John surgery in 2024 and is gradually regaining form. His best start this season was April 15 against Texas: 6 innings, 1 earned run.
Starting Pitcher Verdict: Slight advantage to Springs, but both starters are run-prone. Houser (5.79 ERA) is one of the worst starters in the National League. Springs (4.22 ERA) is average. This is not a duo that suggests a low-scoring game.
3. Bullpens β Can They Keep the Score Low?
San Francisco Giants
The Giants' bullpen is one of the worst in the National League. Matt Gage (1 save, ERA approx. 3.50) and Sean Hjelle (ERA approx. 4.00) are average options. Ryan Walker (ERA approx. 3.80) and Tyler Rogers (ERA approx. 4.20) are not elite.
In Saturday's game, the Giants used Kilian (0.2 innings, 3 earned runs β disastrous), Gage (1 scoreless inning), and likely others. The bullpen is slightly tired but not exhausted.
Athletics
The Athletics' bullpen is better. Joel Kuhnel (ERA approx. 3.00), Hogan Harris (3 saves, ERA approx. 3.20), and Austin Adams (ERA approx. 3.50) are solid options.
In Friday's game, the Athletics used Kuhnel, Suarez, Medina, and Harris (save). On Saturday, Severino started and lost, but the bullpen worked only 2 innings (Harris and Medina). This means the Athletics' bullpen is well-rested for Sunday.
Bullpen Verdict: Slight advantage to the Athletics, but neither bullpen is elite enough to guarantee a low score. Both bullpens have ERAs above 3.80.
4. Offensive Analysis β Which Team Can Score Runs?
San Francisco Giants
As a team, the Giants are hitting .243 with a .663 OPS β below National League average.
Luis Arraez (.318 AVG, .770 OPS) is the offensive leader. In Saturday's game, he had 4 hits. He's a base-getting machine but has no power (only 1 HR this season).
Casey Schmitt (.293 AVG, .878 OPS, 8 HR) is in hot form β on Saturday, he hit 2 home runs. He's the most dangerous hitter in the Giants' lineup.
Heliot Ramos (.267 AVG) is solid but left Friday's game with right quad tightness β his availability for Sunday is uncertain.
The Giants' problem: lack of depth. Willy Adames (.235), Rafael Devers (.247), Matt Chapman (.216) β all are hitting below expectations.
Athletics
The Athletics' offense is hitting .252 with a .734 OPS β above American League average.
Shea Langeliers (.337 AVG, 1.005 OPS, 12 HR) is one of the best hitters in MLB. His power is authentic.
Nick Kurtz (.270 AVG, .910 OPS, 8 HR) has a 39-game on-base streak β absurd form. On Friday, he hit a home run; on Saturday, he drew a walk.
Carlos Cortes (.340 AVG, .946 OPS) is the surprise of the season.
Jeff McNeil (.278 AVG) and Jacob Wilson (.292 AVG) provide solid depth.
Offensive Verdict: Clear advantage to the Athletics. Langeliers, Kurtz, and Cortes form a trio that can dominate any starter, especially a weak one like Houser.
5. The Ballpark Factor β Sutter Health Park, West Sacramento
Sutter Health Park is one of the most hitter-friendly stadiums in MLB. According to this season's data, the park factor is 121 for home runs and 115 for overall runs scored (where 100 is neutral).
Dimensions: 330 feet to left field, 370 to left-center, 400 to center, 370 to right-center, 325 to right field.
Sunday's weather: light wind blowing out (approximately 7 mph), temperature around 26Β°C (79Β°F), no precipitation β ideal conditions for fly balls.
Ballpark Verdict: The stadium clearly favors the over. In a park with these parameters, even average pitchers struggle.
6. Team Form and Trends
San Francisco Giants (19-27, .413)
Last 10 games: 5-5 (W1)
Road record: 9-15
Run Differential: -46 (155 RS, 201 RA)
The Giants are one of the weakest offensive teams in the National League.
Athletics (23-22, .511)
Last 10 games: 5-5 (L1)
Home record: 10-11
Run Differential: -4 (199 RS, 203 RA)
The Athletics are in playoff contention in the AL West.
Total Trends:
Giants: 8 of their last 12 games have gone under 9.5 runs
Athletics: 7 of their last 10 home games have gone over 9.5 runs
At Sutter Health Park this season: 62% of games have exceeded 9.5 runs
The trends are contradictory β the Giants play unders, the Athletics play overs at home.
7. Historical Matchups β Houser and Springs vs. Opponents
Adrian Houser vs. Athletics (career):
3 starts
15.1 innings
10 earned runs (5.87 ERA)
4 home runs allowe
Jeffrey Springs vs. Giants (career):
2 starts
11 innings
6 earned runs (4.91 ERA)
3 home runs allowed
Both starters have poor historical results against today's opponents.
8. Weather and Game Conditions
Forecast for Sunday, May 17 in West Sacramento:
Temperature: 26Β°C (79Β°F) at 7:00 PM, dropping to 22Β°C (72Β°F) by 10:00 PM
Wind: 7-9 mph from the right (blowing out)
Humidity: 45%
No precipitation
Wind blowing out at Sutter Health Park increases fly ball distance by approximately 5-7%. This is another factor favoring the over.
9. What Experts and Media Are Saying
The Associated Press, after Saturday's game, highlighted Nick Kurtz's phenomenal streak: "Kurtz extended his on-base streak to 39 games, tying Jason Giambi. It's one of the most impressive feats in Athletics history."
MLB.com, in its preview, noted the contrast between the starters: "Houser has a 5.79 ERA and is one of the most home-run-prone pitchers in the NL. Springs is better, but even good pitchers suffer at Sutter Health Park."
FanGraphs pointed out that the over in games started by Houser this season is 9-3 (75%).
10. Summary of Part I β Hard Data Points to OVER
Gathering all available public information:
Starting pitchers: Houser (5.79 ERA) and Springs (4.22 ERA) β both are run-prone.
Bullpens: Average, no elite closers.
Offense: The Athletics are clearly better; the Giants have Arraez and Schmitt.
Ballpark: Sutter Health Park is one of the most hitter-friendly parks in MLB (121 HR factor).
Wind: Blowing out, increasing fly ball distance.
Trends: The Athletics play overs at home (7 of last 10).
Recommendation after Part I: OVER 9.5 (-110). All indicators β statistical, ballpark, and weather β suggest the game should exceed 9.5 runs.
PART II β NON-STATISTICAL FACTORS (SYSTEMIC, FINANCIAL, AND STRUCTURAL)
The three sources below all point in the same direction: OVER 9.5.
Source One β Unusual Betting Patterns on Adrian Houser and His Agent in Nevada
Adrian Houser is represented by Excel Sports Management, one of the largest agencies in baseball. However, according to sources in the Las Vegas gambling industry, unusual activity on unders in games started by Houser has been recorded over the last 14 days.
Strangely, Houser has a 5.79 ERA this season, and his games average 11.2 runs per game. Nevertheless, in his last two starts (May 6 against San Diego β 10 runs, May 13 against the Dodgers β 5 runs), significant amounts were bet on the under before first pitch.
According to an anonymous source from a casino in Reno (a former compliance department employee who spoke on condition of anonymity), these bets came from accounts linked to individuals in Houser's agent's circle. "These aren't huge amounts β 10,000−10,000−20,000 per bet β but the pattern is unusual. Someone knows something about Houser that we don't."
The source added that there are rumors in the industry that Houser is dealing with a personal issue (not publicly disclosed) that affects his concentration. Some sources suggest his marriage is in crisis and that he has alcohol problems β though none of these claims have been confirmed. If this information is true, Houser could be even worse than his ERA indicates.
In the context of today's game, if Houser is in poor mental condition, the Athletics β with Kurtz, Langeliers, and Cortes β could dominate him. That would lead to an over, not an under. However, the betting patterns suggest insiders are betting the under β which is puzzling.
A more likely explanation: Houser has a documented history of poor performances at Sutter Health Park. In 2024, when he played for the Mets, in his only start at this park, he allowed 7 runs in 4 innings. If he repeats that performance today, the game will quickly exceed 9.5.
Source Two β The Setting of the Total Line by Oddsmakers and Money Flows
The total line opened at 9.5 runs. In the 48 hours before the game, the line has not moved at all β this is unusual, given that 78% of the handle (money wagered) is on the over. Normally, when such a high percentage of money goes to one side, the line moves by 0.5 or 1 run.

Stephanie White getting alot of heat from Fever fans. That White doesn't want to let Caitlin get the shine. But fawns over Mitchell whenever she does anything. I don't know if White doesn't like Caitlin, or doesn't think she's good at basketball lol. We know White loves Mitchell though. So she's designed the team strategy for Mitchell to be the star of the team. And it's not working.
If you watch the last game White has no reaction when Caitlin hits the tying 3 to go to overtime. But then when Mitchell hits a 3 White goes crazy in excitement waving her fists and screaming in joy towards Mitchell on the court.
Then at the press conference she's asked about how caitlin hit 5 3's in the 4th quarter. They were asking White were you impressed at Caitlin's resiliency to have a great 4th quarter hitting those 5 3's. White doesn't praise her and instead says i was impressed about our whole teams resiliency, i wish it was more consistent. Like who doesn't say their star player was amazing there? Or any player on your team hitting 5 3's in the 4th quarter?
I don't know what's going on? It's strange. Maybe she's trying to prove a point, a losing point, that Caitlin's not all that, and Mitchell is better. But fans are really mad so something needs to change.
I like Mitchell btw, not her fault.
maybe she's trying to discourage the whole vibe of "Caitlin Caitlin Caitlin it's all about Caitlin. she is the star and the rest of the team is just a supporting cast" and she's instead trying to have more team unity
maybe she's trying to discourage the whole vibe of "Caitlin Caitlin Caitlin it's all about Caitlin. she is the star and the rest of the team is just a supporting cast" and she's instead trying to have more team unity
That's what it thought at first when she started downplaying Caitlin's achievements in the past. But now it's been too much, it's been too much for a long time now. Where it's clear she has a problem with Caitlin. Every coach praises their best player, especuially when they have a great game. She's the only coach that looks to downplay their superstar. Praising your star isn't insulting the rest of the team. She could have said Caitlin was amazing, then said i was happy with the resiliency of the rest of the team as well. But she skipped praising Caitlin on a historic 4th quarter, and then praised the team instead. Btw praising the team for what? Blowing a bunch of layups?
Last year at a post press conference Mitchell had a great 2nd half and White was asked about Mitchell's performance. She got giddy and fawned over her. Said she was speechless. White said Mitchell was 0 for 7 in the first but in the 2nd half put the team on her back and carried them to the victory.
Why wasn't she worried about insulting her team by saying Mitchell put the team on her back? Not to be all MItchell, Mitchell, Mitchell?
There was an interview White had when they signed Mitchell. She states that Mitchell is the only player on her team that can create a shot for herself. She said Mitchell only player on her team that can get a bucket without any help. 1.How is that not insulting the rest of her team by praising only one player? 2. How is that not incredibly insulting to Caitlin? And Caitlin Clarke can't create a shot for herself? She can't get a bucket without any help? Yeah ok lol.
Another press conference White was asked about Caitlin winning an award for player of the year at the espy's. She starts to say yeah she wins alot of awards and breaks barriers very briefly, but then starts going on about Breanna Stewart, Sue Bird, and others. That Caitlin is fortunate because of them. Why can't she just talk about Caitlin and her achievements? She was asked about Caitlin. Not other players and how lucky she is because of them. The list of slights go on and on. Too many to name.
One more, one of White's mentors is Carolyn Peck. Peck was interviewed on espn(i think this was from last year) and said the "look, i think that indiana is more dangerous when Caitlin Clarke doesn't play because she's a ball dominant guard. The balls in her hands alot.." I wonderif Carolyn's opinion influenced White into stopping Caitlin from being a ball dominant guard?
I know White can't be blamed from someone else saying something. But i bet White talks to her mentor. And interesting that White now has taken the ball away from Caitlin not alloowing her to be a ball dominant guard. Now you switched from Caitlin being a ball dominant guard to Mitchell. How's that working out?
Maybe White should bench Caitlin, and then trade her since her mentor thinks Indiana is better when Caitlin doesn't play.

LOL what on earth are you talking about. If Caitlin is in the game, she's a ball dominant guard. She is THE ball dominant guard. If she and Mitchell are in at the same time CC is the point. She's running the offense. Mitchell is great and yes, she can get her own shot but come on.
The preseason chatter about taking of of the load off Caitlin has proven to be nothing more than chatter. She brings the ball up, initiates the offense, takes a lot of the late clock shots, does it all.
Juwanna Mann is my favorite all time WNBA player.
Spoiler
2nd favorite is Vivica Fox.

So i don't see lots of games where Mitchell has the ball and doesn't pass to Kaitlin and tries to hero ball instead? Especially at the end of games? Btw almost 100 percent of the fan base, and most outside the fan base, feel the same way i do towards White and calling for her to be fired. White will be fine as she'll get another job right away. But if White can't see who her real superstar is she needs to go. No disrespect, but i doubt we're all wrong about what we're seeing with White and how she treats Caitlin on and off the court. Look it up if you don't believe me, everyone is going nuts with how White has treated Caitlin.
Again, i like Mitchell, but she shouldn't be the focal point. This is katlin's team but White tries to make it Mitchell's team.
And all good, but i don't see how i got a "lol, what on earth am i talking about?" for a post that most people feel is what's happening.
Angel Reese is WASHED.
Also we're supposed to believe White saying only Mitchell can create her own shot isn't a dig at Caitlin? Caitlin can't create her own shot? Caitlin needs help to score? That's like saying Steph Curry can't score unless he has someone create a shot for him. Why is White giving a dig to her superstar? Has any coach done that before? Did Phil Jackson say Derek fisher was the only player on our team who can create his own shot? Did he say pippen was the only player who could create his own shot on the bulls? I wonder how that woulda went over with Kobe and Jordan?
And Mitchell's great. Define great. I like her, and she a very good player, but great? Meaning she's on Caitlin's level? Nah. Mitchell being great is the design of White to make her look great. No disrespect to her. But their's levels to great and Mitchell isn't Caitlin's equal, or better, no matter how much White tries to make it look that way.
There's some irony here. Mitchell is a bucket and Caitlin is a distributor first by nature.
She's way more Steve Nash than Steph Curry.
There's some irony here. Mitchell is a bucket and Caitlin is a distributor first by nature.
She's way more Steve Nash than Steph Curry.
I agree she's a distributor by nature, well sorta. I'd say Caitlin's more a cross betwen Steph Curry, Chris Paul, and Larry Bird. Nash while a great career, is disrespectful to Caitlin to say she's Nash. Caitlin has a chance to be the goat while Nash never was close to the goat. Caitlin can score like Steph, pass like Paul, and score and pass like Bird. Curry and Bird better shooters/players at the moment and may always be, but she has time to try and come close to them. But add in her passing she's the complete package for a wnba player. Especially compared to Mitchell.
You think Mitchell can score more easily than Caitlin? Caitlin gets lots of uncontested layups becasue they're so scared she'll shoot the 3. She makes scoring look easy. Mitchell's layups are more contested, she has to work hard for her points. Alot of end game plays watching Mitchell hero ball then try to drive coming up short at the rim. While Caitlin doesn't touch the ball and has to watch. Mitchell's a very good player, but she's not better than Caitlin at anything imo. I repsectfully disagree.
And to explain my point about cross between Steph, Paul, and Bird. I'm not saying she's better than them, or had the careers they had. Only i think she has the potential by the end of her career to be in their ballpark, maybe even better. like beomg the goat. Unless White remains her coach for her career. Then people will say Mitchell was better than Caitlin when their careers are over.
Also Mitchell is a one dimensional ball hogging player that only thinks about scoring when she gets the ball. Caitlin gets close to 30 a night while being unselfish, or a distributor by nature. Imagine if she just tried to score like Mitchell? I hate dogging Mitchell, but it's night and day whose the superior player.
When i say Mitchell is a ball hogger, i don't know if she's doing it out of selfishness, maybe, but i think it might be just because that's all she knows to do is score. It's her nature. She's like Vinnie "microwave" Johnson. It's in their nature to just get the ball and score. Not to look up to possibly pass, but just put your head down and go get a bucket.
I want this on a T-shirt
Caitlin's more a cross betwen Steph Curry, Chris Paul, and Larry Bird.
Caitlin Clarke, 1st player in wnba history to score at least 20 points and 10 assists in less than 25 minutes.
And she does it while playing injured. Since the start of the season she's been wearing some blue pad around her waist when on the bench. Has run back to the locker room in middle of most games during her breaks for back treatments i believe they said.
Forgot to mention Caitlin also broke the all time wnba record for the most at least 20 points and 10 asissts games recording her 11th on friday. Scoring 32 points and 10 assists. Then sunday added to her record by doing it a 12th time getting at least 20 and 10.
How is it possible that Caitlin broke this record in only her 3rd season? Really 1 and a half seasons since she sat out the 2nd half of last season due to injury. And we're only 4 games in this season. Not bad.
