Rangers putting on a (****) show against their in state rival

The Astros have banged out five bases-empty homers against Jack Leiter and deGrom. The Rangers have managed one run in 18 innings. And Saturday they managed to mess things up with style. They took eight walks and had a batter reach on a hit by pitch and still managed only 1 run. Some context to that, too. Only twice previously in their 54 previous seasons have the usually swing-happy Rangers been granted as many free baserunners and scored as few as one run in a nine-inning game. It was historical futility.

We're a quarter of the way thru the season now and Ohtani's ERA is .82. Maybe one start away from a third of the season. That's a low ERA, in my opinion. Of course with an ERA like that and low IP one rough outing destroys it. It's doubtful he'll get the 162 IP to unofficially "qualify" for a full season, but so far, it is what it is. What it is is 0.82. Of course he is pitching in chitty luck and isn't 5-0, in his bid to get to 100 wins while very high on the career win % list.

I wonder how many starters have thru end of May had an ERA under one. I'm sure there are quite a few. Would be cool to see a list.

Phillies manager Rob Thompson fired.

Seems like the Braves are the only team in the NL East interested in competing for the division

Seems like a good decision so far. It would be nice if the Braves could lose some games.

Gonna win it all for Bobby.

Watched a interview with Greg Maddux and he called his own pitches. How he moved his glove when ball was thrown back to him was the next pitch.

Only he and the catchers catching him knew.

FYP... didn't he have his own catcher?

A’s no-no…OH NO

FYP... didn't he have his own catcher?

It depended on the season. Certainly not every year.

I do think Eddie Perez usually caught the Maddux starts.

I do think Eddie Perez usually caught the Maddux starts.

That is correct. I don't remember if it was every year though. And Maddux played several seasons for the Braves when Eddie Perez wasn't on the team.

Nobody Beats The Miz.

How is this Aaron Ashby guy going 8-0 in 20 relief appearances? He could be the first 30 game winner out of the pen ... with far fewer than under 100 IP. Impressive. Maybe a function of the runner on 2nd granted thing and luck.

Well I guess that's a new one: First player to lead off a game with a homer then be part of a pitching shutout.

GOAT base stealing season over 40 steals (59-63).

38 consecutive successful steals (tied 6th all-time).

Challenging the all-time modern win % for a pitcher while pitching in bad luck his whole career (Kershaw current).

Back-to-back 50 homer seasons (one of seven players to do it).

Four out of five MVP seasons with 2nd the other season.

Way better than his GOAT bidding former teammate Mike Trout.

And a whole lot more.

The win total obviously involves a boatload of luck, but Ashby has always had great stuff. He's had a ton of injuries over the last 3-4 years.

The way baseball is today there'll probably be less than 50 pitchers who throw 162 innings.

I just checked and in 2025 exactly 50 pitchers qualified. So less than 2 pitchers per team. Seems like the qualifications are getting out of date. In 2005 it was 93. In 1960 it was 69, but there were only 16 teams, so 4.3 pitchers per team.

Starting pitchers reach 5 innings much less now. Which leaves wins open to be claimed by the next guy out of the pen. I think it's only a matter of time before you see some guy get 20+ wins and lead the league while pitching 80 bullpen innings.

Starters in general have been getting less and less decisions as their innings have decreased. Back in the 80's you'd see starters with records like 21-13. Now you see guys finish the year at 9-6 when they make 30 starts. Jacob Degrom won back to back cy Youngs with 10 and 11 wins.

The one I always remember is Cliff Lee going 6-9 in 2012. He threw 211 innings at 3.16 ERA and was worth 4.4 WAR.

Ohtani at 3.7 WAR through 50 games of the season. On pace for a career high 12 WAR.

In the last 100 years only a handful of players have gone 0-for-10 in an MLB game. Who was the last to do it?

* I played against him in high school. He was a legend, had won the state a few years before. So I'm playing 3rd base against them, and he is up and had been slumping badly, and their 3rd base coach who was also a local legend, asked me, "What's wrong with him, he looks terrible up there?" I was a freshman and very nervous to be talking to him like that. But I said, "He's way off balance. He's lunging." ... A few years later our family had moved and I was playing for that same team and coach.

Not that anybody outside of Texas cares but the Rangers officially can NOT hit the baseball.

The Knicks could beat the Mets at baseball now I'm pretty sure.

Baseball is weird as hell this year

RIP Horns. His swing was a master class in simplicity, which is why he never spent a day in the minors.

Can someone explain to me why the O/U in the Astros @ Rangers game is 8???

J Alexander @ J Leiter. Both righties so?

Vegas knows something. I'm staying away.

Maybe Astros get it all by themselves?
