My question obviously was rhetorical. [...]

I know, I just found myself in a soapboxing mood today.

The modern view of the world reminds me of this old line from The Simpsons. Just substitute the word "technology" for "alcohol."

I am starting to see the wisdom of hermits.

60 min cliffs?

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/tv/a...

Hartman went on to address CBS editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, adding, "And Bari Weiss, who was the engineer of what Scott correctly called this effort to 'murder' 60 Minutes? She didn't even have the courage to show up at the meeting. And by the way, when Bilton left the room, the assembled 60 Minutes staff gave Scott Pelley a sustained ovation."

Hartman noted that he has "never met" Weiss, but understands "she's a talented opinion writer." However, Hartman alleged that Weiss is "demonstrably unqualified to be running CBS News and 60 Minutes."

Well that's certainly one side of the story. I just started watching Scott Pelley's interview with the NYT. He says that his firing at CBS is, on an emotional level, like finding out your spouse has been murdered. I'm not paraphrasing.

says his bonds with fired colleagues were pretty tight. And when somebody wipes out, MURDERS, a large number of your family members.....

So far this guy is a clown. Reserving judgement though....

Sounds like he is a clown. New management he didn't like came in so he pitched a fit, which is his right. They took the attitude of kick someone's ass or become someone's bitch, which is also their right.

unfortunately, I agree.

He's weeping about his bullshit cushy telejournalism job. He said a newsroom is like a foxhole. Never liked the guy.

Mike Wallace would not be out here crying like this.

I believe most of what he said, but he seems rather high maintenance. Complaining that bagels were brought in for the kickoff meeting w/ Nick Bilton. Huh?

He also said at least one part of the NYT interview that he was searching for words that would not be hyperbolic. That shipped sailed earlier in the interview dude.

A diva.

These people are just celebrities, basically actors. He shows up on camera and asks questions that have already been vetted by the advance team. It's purely performative.

This is why they're all perfectly fine with fascism as long as they get to hold the mic.

He's losing his status.

Remember they always ask the question twice . I can only imagine working at a company and they bring in a new boss to meet the staff and I tell him your only here to ruin the company and show him total disrespect and than shocked that I was fired

IOWA CITY, Iowa β€” Immigration and Customs Enforcement will no longer report deaths of detainees who have recently been released from its custody, in a change that could obscure the full human cost of the Trump administration’s mass detention policies.

Any new yorkers in here have anything to report on mamdani?
See fluff pieces on him fixing potholes and stuff. Anyone actually see any noticable change in just 5 months?

lotta people getting RICH today

Seems to happen every Friday for last two months for some strange reason.

I'm very confident a deal will be signed Monday at the latest.

Given the spacex IPO, I think this needs to be updated.

The top 1% of households owned 31.7% of all U.S. wealth in the third quarter of 2025, the highest share on record since the Federal Reserve began tracking household wealth in 1989. That share has increased even as wealth growth for the rest of the population has stalled or slowed, the data shows.

But, hey. I'm sure he's putting that trillion dollars to good use.

4000+ new millionaires is just a tad more than a trickle of wealth.

Sounds more like a blockage than trickling.

its fine give him all the money he deserves it

I'm with munger in never investing in musk or betting against him

but this seems insanely speculative. in my worthless opinion the more obvious potential huge value in musk's stuff is the robotics - which is tesla not spacex. I'm sure space type stuff will be insanely huge but sufficiently mega profits looks so far off and the level of investor risk looks insane.

I know what you mean, I feel the same way about Juice Wrld.

Who didn't see this coming?

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday that the Department of Justice is investigating him, claiming that President Donald Trump is targeting a β€œpolitical enemy” despite no evidence the Democratic potential 2028 presidential contender has committed a crime.

I've lived in the city for a long time. Other than a modest uptick in enthusiasm among people of lesser means in the city, I don't really recognize any change. Crime hasn't increased or decreased in any way that is noticeable to me. I haven't noticed any significant change in things like sanitation, homelessness, etc. A visitor to the city would notice zero change imo. People who were expecting dramatic improvement or dramatic deterioration don't understand city government well imo (or the city generally).

The recent back and forth between Dolan and Mamdani over the Knicks watch party outside MSG was a bog standard kerfuffle for the mayor's office, and a good example of the difference between reality and perception for a lot of people. There were twenty or so arrests after game 4. Conservative media of course tried to portray Mamdani as allowing the city to descend into mayhem. In fact, no such thing was occurring. Mamdani's message after game 4 was that there was zero tolerance for violence, and he imposed much more significant restrictions on the watch party in advance of game 5. Dolan complained and accused Mamdani of ruining the "joy" of Knicks fans (which of course was pure theater from Dolan). After Dolan said that he would rather not have a watch party outside MSG at all than have one with the restrictions Mamdani was imposing, Mamdani called his bluff and just cancelled the MSG watch party entirely.

I do think that Mamdani has done a good job of staying connected to voters. He is bringing a lot more youthful exuberance and positive energy to the office than the last few mayors. I also think he has done a good job so far of managing Trump. I would say that I am cautiously optimistic based on how things have gone so far.
