I don't think i've ever read a book and thought "what concept does this character represent". i've read and reread blood meridian for years. and it wasn't til just today that the thought of the judge as America occured to me. I doubt Cormac intended for the judge to be America. just was thinking they are same in...

absolute selfishness
0 aversion to ruthless violence
absolute self proclaimed supremacy

but idk, it's been a while since I read any of it.

*edit* Also they are both gigantic and kind of repellent

interesting you list blood meridian and shogun as kind of your top two. me too! almost... I think lonesome dove is my favorite.

crazy how amazingly good shogun, and king rat are, but the rest of clavell's novels are absolute trash. like the guy can't write for ****!

also heard that irl he was in a japanese prison camp ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I know, itโ€™s crazy. How tf did he write that perfect book.

Kioshk and i just had this discussion in the OOT book thread but I feel the same love for Lonesome Dove and all mcmurtryโ€™s other books are also trash.

oh I like mccmurtary's other books! I like them a lot actually.

I listen to the audiobook of dead man's walk all the time. that's the one where Gus and call are like 18 years old.

imo, he's just great at using words, like when he is describing this cowboy being in debt to a sex worker in "dead man's walk"

"....the result of a persistent lust coupled with a vexing string of losses at cards"

McMurtry loves philosophy. iirc his favorite is Walter Benjamin. I think mccmurtary's insight into humanity, makes his characters and their experiences good reading.

he wrote a great biography of crazy horse. it's frustratingly short because there is so little record of him.

far and away the two best biographies of crazy horse are mccmurtray's(like 40 pages or something crazy), and then the best is "the journey of crazy horse" by Joseph m marshall. it's entirely based on oral history his grandfather told him.

my favorite part is when crazy horse was coming back from the greasy grass(little big horn) and he was thinking to himself "yeah they're gonna leave us alone now cuz we just killed their army. **** yeah! finally! dream come true! we won! we won!" but then he saw more whites than ever invading, and he just snapped. he abandoned all his responsibilities. he just left! and went on a solo 30 day killing spree of white people.

maybe I should go check out the book thread

you would be a most valuable contributor

the only things i remember about dead manโ€™s walk was they were both drunk all the time and they never actually accomplished much of anything to deserve their fame.

which was probably the point.

oh, I donโ€™t get Walter Benjamin AT ALL i bought The Arcades Project and was like what the hell is this and sent it back.

i donโ€™t have trouble with postmodernists or structuralists i can read everything from derrida to heidegger but walter benjamin is just over my head or something idk.

but i doubt this affects my reading of mcmurtry books

and the crazy horse book i read was by stephen ambrose who is a court historian and also a plagiarist iirc so i prolly need to read the one filthy recommends

the one i like for tecumseh is A Sorrow in our Heart

I can't find the book thread. could you please link?

itโ€™s not you, itโ€™s me. thread is in The Lounge.

And many more!

The move that altered history.

What a dumb tweet.

How was free speech in danger, and how did Elon Musk buying Twitter save it?

I'm assuming both of these quotes are 100% made up.

Elon flipped it from a left-wing propaganda machine to the truth-seeking platform of today. A troll-ish statement but also carries a lot of truth.

I doubt Trump gets elected without the move.

when they say โ€œfree speechโ€ they just mean broadcasting their propaganda

it has nothing to do with individual human beings expressing opinions

many things become clear when you have a basic definition

Pre-Elon Twitter had a simple solution, They just banned anyone they disagreed with.

Twitter/X is now the mouthpiece for both sides.

the people they disagreed with being nazis, transphobes, racists, ultranationalists, xenophobesโ€ฆ

now all these viewpoints are well represented

Don't be mean to Democrats!

do you get posts from the left in your feed? i'm assuming you have a fairly right wing feed.

I actively try to get the algorithm to keep right leaning tweets away from me, but it still shows me misongyst and racist content fairly often.

My feeds are engineering, rockets and Tesla stuff. I see more Nazis stuff here.

so I get more Nazi and misogyny than you do?! wtf man.

maybe it knows mark is on their side. they don't have to worry about him. and they are trying to convert me

NY is hiring left-wing nut-bags to help fill previous Democrat roles. Send in your resume!
