Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
LOL Spike dissing Jimi Hendrix and not having the courage to show the Asian market get done just like Sal’s.
Never watched Seven Psychopaths before. If I knew who made it, I would have watched it a long time ago. Love his movies, and he has a new one coming in November.

Seven Psychopaths isn't bad from memory.
I can take or leave Robert Eggers as I liked The Lighthouse and The Northmanbut wasn't keen on The VVitch or Nosferatu but based on the trailer, I'm quite intrigued to see Werwulf
Just watched Obsession and all I can say is believe the hype it's great and the best Horror I've seen this year and Curry Barker is definitely a director to keep an eye out for. Inde Navarrette is excellent in it and deserves an Oscar nom for her performance.
The algorithm keeps suggesting a guy who reviews movie trailers. A guy who reviews movie trailers. WTF?

Totally agree. Obsession and Bone Temple are the best horrors of the year so far, and the outstanding performance I've seen this year is Inde Navarrette.
There's something about actresses in horror movies in the last 5 years... the talent is incredible, be it Mia Goth, Betty Gilpin, Lily Rose Depp, Samara Weaving, Sophie Thatcher. And now Inde Navarrette.
Desk Set with Tracy and Hepburn. Both are terrific as usual, and the film anticipates AI almost presciently, except things go away when Tracy, an efficiency engineer, tries to replace humans with computers.
Hepburn's range is amazing. She is, without a doubt, the greatest actress of the 20th century.

Excellent timely point about a 70 year old movie nailing future events. The chemistry between Tracy and Hepburn alone is worth the watch.
Coming from Europe agree with how tf have you never heard forever Young lol
hot take Robert eggers is a v bad director who makes movies that sound exciting terribly boring, don’t like a single movie he’s made and the most bafflingly acclaimed director in recent times
also Martin mcdonagh has made 1 good movie, in bruges
I Think war on everyone by his brother is underrated, or not rated at all
wrong thread
Believe me. I had never heard Forever Young. Honestly.
Guys, I'm 72. I have not heard plenty of music from the '80s.
In Desk Set (mentioned above) Hepburn starts to sing the verse "Like the beat, beat, beat of the tom-tom." Not every version of the song includes the verse.
Tell me what song that is. I can claim you must know the song. It's famous. The title of the song is also the title of a movie starring Cary Grant that's about the composer of the song.
So you all must have heard it.

Now you've gone and done it.
If you are going to mention Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant in the same post, we are going to have to add in some Jimmy Stewart and talk about The Philadelphia Story.
If I had to make a list of the greatest movies ever, then The Philadelphia Story makes the list easily. Great dialogue, comedy and an all star cast. Top 100 film for sure and probably Top 25 comedy film.

My favorite is Bringing Up Baby. But The Philadelphia Story that features Tracy's little sister singing "Lydia the Tattooed Lady," is a bonus.

I believe you believe it. But do you think it's more likely that you have gone over 40 years without ever hearing a super famous song that has been covered extensively and been used in a bunch of movies/tv shows, and then out of the blue you hear it twice on the same day, or that you have heard it before and it just never registered until now?
I believe it's possible that I may have heard a few seconds of it in some TV show. If I did, I have no recollection of it.
Of course you could fill an ocean with all the things I haven't seen, heard, or don't know.
The answer to my question above is Cole Porter's "Night and Day."
Just one version of hundreds.

Amber Midthunder & Madeleine McGraw too.
The Invite - yeesh Olivia Wilde is talented. This so well written, acted and directed. Manages to make a story that seems better suited to theatre (four people in a single setting talking) cinematic. Seth Rogen is especially good.
The Sheep Detectives, surprisingly good and moving. Who will remember us when we are gone?

This one snuck up on me. Here I was thinking I was signing up for a cute, quirky whodunnit featuring celebrities voicing CGI sheep. What I got instead was a deep film with a beautiful story about grief, legacy, and a celebration of life. Kind of a mind **** of a movie for a middle aged guy like me.
A few nights ago I was scrolling through my library and landed on Labyrinth. Figured it's been years so I watched it and fell in love all over again. Bowie is so fantastically whimsical and weird, his music will forever stand the test of time and then I remembered being a boy having a crush on Jennifer Connelly. This time around I'm a dog dad and enjoyed Didymus and Ambrosius even more this time around. I went to log the movie on Letterboxd and like I always do, I look for reviews from friends. I learned that Labyrinth is my recently deceased friend's favorite movie of all time. It was really nice to read his words and it made me so sad because my immediate instinct was to send him a message about it. Life is too short, man.
Can't wait to see the Sheep Detectives lol
I have not seen it since I was perhaps 10 years old, but a scene that will forever stay with me, is the one of the 2 guards, one of them that always tells the truth and the other one that always lies. The answer seemed almost metaphysical/transcendental back then, by now seems trivial.
Another part of the movie that will be engrained for the rest of this lifetime, is a back piece tattoo (35h) of Bryan Froud's art, who was the conceptual designer of the film (as well as in The Dark Crystal and Fraggle Rock) : https://au.pinterest.com/pin/43185305174...
Watched a really cheesy scifi movie on Prime called America is Sinking. This is one of those so bad it's good movies. It was just like a cheeseball 50's scifi and the dialog was amazingly hilarious and I really don't think it is what they were going for. I think they were trying to play it straight. Earthqaukes under both the Atlantic and Pacific occur at the same time which will engulf North America with Tsunamis. But they have 48 hours to fix it! The whole thing is hilariously ludacris 😀
This did whet my appetite for 50's scifi cheese so I watched double feature I probably hadn't seen since I was 12. The Amazing Colossal Man and it's sequel The War of the Colossal Beast. They don't really hold up 😀 There are some nice vintage shots of 1950's Las Vegas though. There is a very disappointing lack of action from The Colossal Man/Beast and the special effects are laughable by today's standards but I really remember loving both of these when I was a kid.
I like watching movies with vintage footage of Las Vegas. I had lived there for many years. But since movie editors don't necessarily know a place, sometimes you'll see a scene where a character is driving down a street next to a certain group of casinos and then a split second later be driving past casinos in a completely different place and your mind goes, no.
