The "LOLCANADA" thread...again

So what's new?

I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet

blaming it only on climate change is a bit of a cop out and a little too easy for my liking and will probably be used as an excuse to not increase the budget. Climate changes slowly increases the % and range of bigger fires but its a very gradual increase what happened the last 5+ years is certainly variance but their could be other more obvious contributing factors. Why not in

Nobody says Canadian wildfires are “only” climate change. However you don’t seem to have anything to substantiate your viewpoint that Canadian wildfire fighting has gotten substantially worse, from what I can tell if anything it has gotten better but having to deal with worse fires.

Climate change is indeed the principal root cause of increase in lost fire acreage.

Warmer air causes greater transfer of moisture from soil and plants into the atmosphere. That makes the fuel supply drier.

Warmer air increases the breeding life cycles of bark beetles which feed off of and weaken the trees, making them more even vulnerable to fire.

Climate change leads to more extreme weather including wind intensity which is a wildfire amplifier.

Nut Nut, having revealed yourself as completely ignorant about climate change policy I don’t think you need to feel a call to chime in here. Let the knowledgeable people handle it!

Yikes if the new 50% tariffs, if they get implemented, are going to ****ing hurt. **** Trump.

I am starting to wonder if Carney's plan is Elbows up and wait till Trump is out of office . Many are questioning if he is telling us the truth about the Gordie Howe bridge as well

I mean. You either believe our administration who says we've offered significant trade concessions in hopes of reaching a deal all parties like or you believe the administration that has put out lie after lie.

This one should be rather easy chief.

As for how he's dealing with Trump, everyone is waiting for him to be out of office. Until then the tariff threats will not end. What's to say if we sign a deal 100% pro-USA tomorrow, he won't find another reason to tariff Canada?

May he die in his sleep tonight.

see heres the thing it doesn't actually matter if its got worse or not. it needs to get better even if it has gotten better! Seems like a bipartisan issue.

Some quick searching has shown ontario has a budget of 150 million but spent 300 million last year. 150 million or even 300 million is kind of laughable actually. my small local hospital has a 340 million dollar budget. How much are we wasting on subs again? Oh 100+ billion that could pay for the Canadian wildfire budget for the next millennia LOL. My god what a waste of money

Lozen may be right about Carney not being straight with us on the bridge.

It seems really unclear right now on whether the US gets any money until the bridge is paid for.

This bridge thing is becoming a really annoying symbol of our entire relationship with the US.

We finance and build a bridge, that will be co-owned, and all we want is our money back before anything other funds are split.
Yet somehow, a free bridge just isn't good enough for Trump.

If Carney caved I will be pissed off

I never get these arguments. The government does a thousand things. Some are big, and expensive, some are much smaller. And for any individual thing you can get look at your pet thing you are mad about and be like why don’t we spend the money on the thing we are mad about on the thing we want. It’s basically a vacuous argument.

The argument is its such a small amount of money spent for such an important thing. We could scrap the subs snd double the budget for the next 100 years. Like us the government also deals with inflation. This budget might have been fine 10 years ago

Right so just doubling down on that stupid argument. Ok.

This has been extremely confusing since the beginning, I kind of wonder whether that extends to the highest levels. A part of me is wondering the phone call between carney and Trump literally left with them not completely understanding/agreeing with each other, specifically on whether interest payments are part of operating costs.

Watching Global tonight and they have confirmed what Carney told us was not true as they released the details of the deal last night at 11:30. As well no one was available for comment

I want to hear what Carney has to say since this all this surfaced. I can't believe that he, or any Prime Minister, would cave to the extent that we are hearing. If true, this is nothing short of conceding to blackmail.

I mean we have had to concede to blackmail many times now. We’ve retreated on almost every position. I’m not sure that is even wrong to do, it is not at all clear how best to proceed with Trump. With the bridge the way I put it earlier was that it wasn’t clear if it was a half pound of flesh or a full pound of flesh that was conceded but a concession it definitely was.

There is also a confusion over what exactly is being quoted. I think at one point Carney is talking about how the profit sharing happens after Canada is paid back and he is referring here to the original Michigan agreement which reverts back in place after 15 years, not meaning to contradict the economic fund part in the first 15 years. It’s all rather a mess.

Yeah, but interesting that he is in no rush to clarify anything. He is no financial dummy, obv. He has been quoted sereval times as saying Canada gets paid first (ahead of the 15 years), so if it is otherwise he will look either deceptive (hiding the facts) or incompetent (not knowing the facts), and I really had not expected him to look either at any point in this.

The only other card is that he has a difference in interpretation of what in the 2012 deal supersedes the recent "bend me over" deal.

My apologies Lozen. Looks like you were right after all. I'm a bit behind on politics but it sure seems like Carney straight up lied to us.

Bloomberg said they saw the deal, and it included no provision to pay for debt first.

And to add insult to injury, after seemingly agreeing to a horrible deal we're still getting extra tariffs.

Save to conclude Carney is just as useless as the rest of them.

It happens every now and than.

Uke seems to be making excuses with comments like

if this extended to the highest levels

If carney is telling us at a press conference about the deal he should have his facts straight
Lets be clear he told us one thing and than dropped the actual terms at 11:30 and had no one the next day to comment on it. There is no other prognosis other than he lied to Canadians .
There are other terms that give the US more control on the tolls charged which favors the folks controlling the other bridge that are friends of Trump.

Uke why will you not say Mark Carney lied to Canadians?

by Pablito

Carney straight up lied to us.

This is indeed with Poilievre is trying to say, but I don't think this is the case. Here's the key quote from what I can tell:
"It's not splitting the tolls of the bridge. It is an agreement for 15 years to split net revenues. Splitting of tolls — any sharing of the toll revenue — won't happen until all of the debt, all of the debt is repaid."
This is a pretty clumsy statement. But it's fairly clear here that the debt repaid part is referring to what happens after the 15 years and he is completely correct. For the first 15 years, there is the split with the Trump agreement, and then after the 15 years Canada gets 100% until all debt is repaid. I'm totally on board with you guys thinking this statement should be much clearer, and specifically it was very unclear for a week plus about whether interest costs were or were not included in the initial 15 year portion, but I don't think he is saying this to try and intentionally deceive. I think he polishing a turd, for sure.

To be honest, I have no idea wtf Carney is supposed to be doing with any of these Trump negotiations. Everything sucks:(

Amazing your no different than the MAGA individual that has nothing bad to say about Trump.

Carney lied nothing to debate . I am sure he will get a pass on this though.
