Need a salary floor >>>> cap imo, I’ll refrain from arguing why cuz it’s been beaten to death obv

Y not both

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

both would suffice more than neither

Just sayin floor is better to prevent scenarios like the twins selling off literally half their team in middle of a playoff race despite them and every other franchise being owned by billionaires except maybe the reds

by miamicheats

Lack of a real salary cap and distribution networks controlling revenue splits and then ultimately the amount a team can spend is pretty shitty.

Signed an angry fan of a team spending bout tree fiddy times less than the super teams.

if there's gonna be headrubs involved, can I get in on that too?

Im more in favor of a spending floor, based on a percentage of revenue. I don't think the poor mouthing "small market" owners will go for that. And I don't think a salary cap will go through either. Not sure how I'd bet on the chances of a lockout in 2027 - hope not since the last long one in 1994 really hit the overall fan interest in baseball.

I've heard one suggestion for a realignment which would put larger markets together in one conference and smaller ones in another - that would be similar to the premier league in soccer I guess (though I don't really know anything about how soccer works). But I'd be amazed if that sort of move is feasible.

I feel the same. No hatable players

Tbh though, I quite like super teams and I find the forced parity of US sports to be quaint commie bs

Superteams are cool when you have multiple of them to battle it out. That's why the Premier League is such a good product.

If it's a Bayern Munich situation then that's boring AF.

All European leagues in most of the major team sports are built on the premise of promotion and relegation, which IMO is way way better than the closed shop franchise model of the US big sports. Meritocratic (in a capitalistic way), provides interest at both ends of the tables, disincentivises tanking etc etc.

Another implication of promotion and relegation is that there are no drafts and clubs do their own junior development and it doesn’t block the earlier ascension of super talented teenagers like the draft/college system does. Which again I prefer

This system also ensures that most teams spend almost all of their revenue trying to compete at the top or avoid relegation.

The outright tanking in US sports is so bad to watch. The Colorado Rockies function as a giant outdoor bar basically. Why spend money trying to field a competitive team when people will show up to drink beer regardless of how bad they are?

Relegation is good, but parity and uncertainty at the top is better. **** Real, Barca, PSG, Bayern, City.

Arsenal are the best team in Europe right now.

too much sportsball talk, not enough head rubs discussion

Well you are not dependent on routine if you are roaming the continent.

Cute pics and I will abstain from my favorite pun.

gotta balance all the chaos here with some cuteness :p

ELI5?

by miamicheats

I have no knowledge other than him and Vlad being tight. Why do you expect them not to bring back Bichette?

I expect the Jays to do everything in their power to bring him back, but I know he'll be courted by everyone and I just get the feeling he might move on.

ELI5?

each year worst 2 mlb teams get sent to AAA and are replaced with the best 2 AAA teams

it's a devastating blow that punishes teams intentionally putting out bad products to improve draft equity or just save money on payroll

Not sure you understand how minor league baseball teams work. Their personnel is completely controlled by the major league team they are associated with. If someone is good, they move up to the main team. No owner is going to want to support two teams and make them competitive.

You can’t have promotion and relegation with the draft system imo.

He was explaining to RtP what relegation means.

ELI5?

in the English system, every single amateur, semi pro and professional league and division is linked from the local all the way through to the national and by winning/placing in your division you can eventually rise all the way to the top division. Divisions generally have 12 clubs each

So eg, in rugby the top division is

Premiership 1 then comes
The Championship
National 1
National 2.

all 4 are divisions covering the whole of England so in any week you can be playing someone in the north, south, east, west etc.

Below National 2 the clubs/divisions are spread regionally....so North 1, Midlands 1, South East 1 and South West 1. If you win your regional division you get promoted up to National 2 and the losing 4 teams in National 2 get relegated down to North, SEast 1 etc

underneath each of those are second and third divisions which are all regional. Again...the winners and losers of each go up and down.

Underneath the bottom regional division you go to County Divisions and generally each county has 2-4 divisions. There are 50ish counties in the UK and again you move up or down divisions based on results. IF eg there are 10-12 counties in each region then the winner of the county divisions have to play off to gain their place in the Regional division

So....it could be feasible for a team in the bottom divisioon in say Surrey (my county) division 3 to rise from the bottom league in the country to Premiership 1 in a decade or so if they win their division each year. And likewise, teams can fall all the way down

In my rugby career, when I left college I joined a club (Esher) who were in South East division 2 and spent 6 years with them. In my first season, we won South East 2 then spent 2 seasons in South East 1 before we won the third season. In my final season before moving to Australia, we won National 2 and were promoted to National 1. The players get better, the standard gets higher and there's more money and investment needed from the club to pay the players, coaches etc.

soccer has the exact same system ...but with more leagues and levels

that system is excellent. i imagine skilled young guys get poached from higher leagues?

you need to google what eli5 means 😀

you guys would love this show

What happens, if anything, to players that are really good and/or high paid?

Do they get relegated to or do they play for the team that got moved up or traded?

yes. Ambitious clubs/club owners can invest/pay overs. Plus success attracts other good players from the areas who want to win.

So eg the club I joined had a few former players invest a ton of money. They hired a very high profile former international player as the coach, then they used him and match payments to recruit me and a few other good college players who wanted to build careers and not try to play full time (i wasn't good enough anyway) to play a division or two below where we could have played. Then they also lured 3/4 former Premiership/Championship players who were still good but not good enough to play top division anymore and who also had good jobs/businesses but still wanted to play a decent standard of rugby and be part of something.

every time we got promoted, the success attracted more young players and the squad got tougher and the opposition and playing standard got higher as we moved up. In my 6 years I went from one of the best players to 'just hanging onto my spot in the team' and I wouldn't have been good enough probably after we got promoted again.

My club stalled at around that level and are still there but there are other clubs who are now in the Premiership who were below my club's level when I was playing who have had multi millionaires throwing huge $$ into them

in soccer, generally if your team gets relegated from the Premier League and you are a top player, you'll be sold to another Premier League club/somewhere overseas.

the club needs the $$ to re-invest in new/heaper players to get promoted again and they can't afford the wages either. There is a giant $$ difference in funding for Premier League TV money to the level below - tens of millions

then same again in terms of more money for the top 4/5 who qualify for UEFA Champions League. That is a 9 figure pa win/loss
