1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

Plo was fine but games got slow so I left for a good looking 2/5 where we are graced by the presence of a friendly and action trans woman who mentioned she actually has a pssy. Very card dead unfortunately though. Need to get a hand!

Ran extremely well at 2/5, winning heaps there much thanks to our trans friend. Biggest was AKo 3! pot $300 pre all in flop A-high. I undid all the damage from yesterday’s runbad and then some. Woohoo! Still got it.

Got a great night's slumber, close to 10 hours, the sweet spot for me after a very successful session. Felt quite conflicted about going after the trans player in that 2/5/10 game, after all she is family and I had a soft spot for her. Unfortunately she was incredibly good action and was VPIPing 100% RFI to 6x without a straddle and was at one point calling massive 3!s and propelling me to my best 2/5 session ever. The opportunity was too good to pass up. Plus she looked like she could afford to lose, judging from her attire anyway. Maybe if she knew a little about me she would feel better about where the money went. Next time I see her I'll try talking her up a little more. I liked her confidence and her openness, and she dressed very extravagantly in a miniskirt and dazzling jewelry and heavy on the make up, takes some courage. I am sure she's had a tougher life than most too, something I can relate to. She's a fighter too, like a lot of us. "I am trans and gay, but I just want respect," she said at one point to no one in particular in her high-pitched voice. Well said.

She sounds like a blast. I play against guys who I can't imagine can afford to lose what they do. I used to feel guilty about it, but they are adults, and I'm there to win money. I still feel bad sometimes :( I hope they can afford it.

She made the game really lively and fun, no question about that…. It was the most fun I’ve had at 2/5 probably ever. She was sipping on bud light all night too.

Had a good session, played all day up around $1,700…lost a bluff at the end trying to get V to fold nut flush on rivered paired board but alas he wasn’t buying it. (I had been betting big with the goods earlier and he was probably getting suspicious.) Still a strong day all things considered even if not a huge win. The big game looked only so-so tonight so not a huge loss. Finally some well-deserved rest.

Annie is great for the game. Just don't loan her any money.

Good to know! Not that I was planning on it. I don't loan money to strangers. But I swear I heard her characteristic laugh outside the other day in the distance after I got home.

New day, a delightfully sunny one, 9.5 hours of sleep was enough, cracking the windows for a light breeze with my latte and music (roses, imanbek remix; let go, frou frou).

Remembering everything to be grateful for in life, health, income, friends, family, personal growth. Also staying humble and realizing I have a lot of growth left in me. I still make mistakes and have room to improve. It's not just about the money, but about whether I am playing my personal best.

Stellar 5/T/25 session this afternoon when plo got stale, AA triple up v two QQs, another AA held, QQ held v ?? All in pre sb v straddle too. Took a break and back at plo now running fine.

Ran hot in the evening plo session, now a little mix to have some fun before a well-deserved rest.

Omg…just lost second nut boat nut low draw to nut boat in o8 on 822…A238 v T885. lol! Raises are unlimited heads up so I just offered to get it in. Jeez. $500 I’ll never see again.

could have saved the last $360 that hand by flatting the raise on the flop, oh well. A little bit of my big bet instincts kicking in. Woke up today with regrets about the hand even though I had another phenomenal night of poker overall, I am tough on myself sometimes. could set another monthly record if I do well enough today and tomorrow, will see. Some late month rungood at 5/T/25 is unexpectedly helping boost the bottom line.

Solid sleep, sunny outside, latte and headphones for a change of pace, watching eric prydz call on me music video, it never gets old lol, what a classic!

Switched to a better game, limp raised and got it in with KQJT9ds and AAT74ds and lost both. Oh well. Grinding it back! Day is young. Sounds like I may have a couple more new students soon too!

If you dislike playing hands out of position just raise more pre. Raise $25 to button limp and get them to call with **** or reraise with worse. Most will fold post flop to a cbet. Feel like losing lots of value long term limping there just b/c it’s your SB

lol, is this is response to the hand I played many years ago when I was first shot-taking 2/5 and limped KK in the small blind?

That takes me back!

Was running meh all night but made a come back at 5/T/25 and now 10/10 plo winning AKJ54ds three ways all in pre over a blind raise and two calls after losing AJJ84ds with similar action but ran into AA. Grinding it back!

Lmao that explains the bankroll. I was like hmmm I thought I had read you were playing 10/10 interesting.

Yep, lol - not limping KK in SB anymore, and I am pretty sure if I ever do that now (almost never), it is to limp-raise from EP. No scared money player here anymore! Snap called QQ in my sb open versus straddle 5! jam the other day for $1,700 and didn't think twice about it.

Got plenty of rest, looking forward to a visit from the ex after a while break, some latte sun and music, and happy to see an upbeat inflation reading down to the Fed's target.

Good dinner with ex, he broke up with his bf so maybe there’s an opening again, will see. Not sure if it would be for the best, last time we ended on a sour note.

Some rungood in the early going to 5/5 plo but then lost it slowly and the game was pretty slow with lots of people walking fao I left for the smaller plo game which looked better. Doing well so far here. Could be a record month if I make a few thousand.

Edit: limp/raised AKQT7ds in sb over an iso
to $250 three ways flopped top two nfd freerolled same top two no redraw and scooped.

After playing a nitty 5/5 for an hour, left for 1/2 5 where I ran decently, then a seat opened at 25/25, game looked half-decent but I lost OP+nfd to wrap+fd and top two to bottom set and booked an L on the last day of the month, but still a great month up there with my best. Was also pretty card dead this session, but at least I booked a small win at the smaller game.

June, new month! Halfway point of the year, and what a year it's been already. If I do even half as well as I've done so far this year I will be pretty happy.

Enjoying the sun today, the usual routine going well, plenty of sleep too.

Beginning of session no good, lost dsAA all in pre to t-high and KQJT to same player’s AA…no justice. Sorta frustrated to be stuck in a lame small game right now, the dude who won all my chips tipped the brush $30 if he beat me which he did and then hit and run. Hoping a seat at a bigger game opens up before long….

My local casino runs a similar game to the 1/2/5 one you have at MGM there. What bankroll do you recommend I have to start playing semi pro or weekend warrior type? Maybe just bring 3-4 bullets every visit?

If you're already pretty good and your games are soft, you probably don't need more than $20,000-$30,000 if you're only playing occasionally. If you're less experienced I would recommend somewhat more than that.

Last night was a little frustrating, ran meh at the smaller game then a seat opened up at 25/25/50, won AKJT6ds 3! pot, then won dsAA in 3! pot too and was chipping up, then slowly bled down until I was about to quit for the night booking a decent W on the first night of June when I was dealt a big AAKJ5ds and 3!, the action player cold 4! to $1,700 and I 5! shipped $4,700 and we got it in heads up against his AAKKKds and ran it twice. Unfortunately on the second river he made the nut flush (he flopped one bdfd, I flopped two and a pair or 5s) and I got three-quartered. :/ Pretty annoying end to the session, game was still running but it was getting late and I wanted to get to bed at a reasonable hour and take a call with my friend this afternoon to catch up with her after a while.

Played fairly well overall, just didn't get rewarded yesterday. Got a new zip-up sweater for $20 on sale to reward myself for a stellar May, apparently it wasn't lucky yesterday.

Lost with top set at plo, but got into a really good 5/T/25 with opens to $300 since that’s what the action player is calling. Won a good one with KK and otherwise a little card dead.

Got squeezed out of a couple profitable spots with the action player preflop with mid-pocket pairs, won one uncontested pre with a squeeze of my own to $1,625, and started getting tired so called it a good session up $6,000 or so in the big hold'em game, nice start to the month! Was torn between messing up my schedule and playing longer to try to win more just like the other night, but I was up a good amount and happy with my profits for the day.

Sunny outside, enjoying my "morning" routine lattes with some deep house beats. Life's good!

Hand of the session was action player flats in SB pre versus LP open and BB defend, flop KQ9, turn T, BB bet call call. River 3. BB bet $3,000, call, action flats. BB shows JTo, BTN shows KJo, action shows...AJo!??!!!?!?!?
