1/3 Grinding and Bankroll
Hi all,
First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.
I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.
I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?
I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.
Appreciate the feedback.
Thanks,
DT
Running meh at plo in the big pots, won a little at 5/T at least so not stuck much. Lost AA345 to AKJ83ss in A73ss in 5! pot among others. Grinding it back.
Might try to get a seat in the big private hold ‘em games soon, will see if anything opens up.
Lost another big pot to same action player with AAKQ9 to her AJT42 in 3! pot at a low spr when her wrap got there on the turn and I flopped top two, but made a stellar comeback winning nfd + nut wrap and top pair nfd to stack this nitty player both times, also called axn player with second nut straight + fd ott and lost to her better straight (I will make lighter calls against certain players if I think it's warranted), ended down just $800 on the day, not bad given I was stuck over $3,000 at my low point.
Woke up a little late but it's still daylight, got more coaching interest which is always cool to see.
Got pretty beat up at plo today, lost most of my AAs pre, lost Q-high ds rundown to two worse hands blocking each other, misread my hand once costing me a buy in but I wasn’t drawing dead at least, lost A5 with four overs on 554 to 36, got slowrolled for good measure too, and doubled up 28 on 228 with AA in 3! pot with my fd. Finally fed up with losing I quit for a good looking 5/T. Some of the bum hunters are playing this instead of plo so it must be a good table change. Trying to grind it back now.
Won AJo to ?? on A34ssJ turn when it went it, and then won another 3! pot against the same player but he folded on the flop to my jam. Now only stuck a very manageable $1,700. Relief. Grinding this rec-heavy 2/5 now, 5/T got short-handed.
I was called out by a dealer for going north today, I was in for $6,000 and bought in a few hundo above the max, and running like a$$, what a bother. He waited for me to lose a pot before saying anything too. He’s a sassy one who you can tell looks down on the players from his attitude. Definitely not tipping him generously!
Made almost the rest back at 2/5, flopped quad 5s in 3! pot against a drunk maniac, and got AKs through pre and post. Glad I can go home soon not as poorer as I was a few hours ago stuck a modest few hundred as opposed to several thousand! Still got it…!
Good move to leave plo, I was definitely steaming and hold ‘em is a quick reset and cool down for me mentally.
At the end of my 2/5 session this Indian reg with a condescending attitude had a flush on the river and I said “what a surprise,” prompting him to tell me not to comment on hands and call me a “fa..g.” I told the floor what he said but because the dealer couldn’t corroborate it nothing happened to this twat. And apparently he has called another person the f bomb too and isn’t allowed to talk to that person anymore. Anyone who plays 2/5 in my room at all regularly will know who he is. He’s probably a homophobe if he uses that word so often…especially to people he knows are gay…if you are LGBTQ friendly, do not be nice to this person! What a terrible way to end a session.
So sorry for that guy :( I wish you could get him kicked out or at least banned from talking to you. It's so sad that so many humans suck. (I always loved the "Mean people suck" sticker on cars. The rebuttal sticker was hysterical, too!)
Yeah just ignore that guy and don't do anything that would antagonize him in the future. Put him out of your mind entirely. Stay zen, that is the path to winning.
Or you go prison rules and anyone calls you that or punk or biatch you have to swing on sight. "When keeping it real goes wrong." It's up to you which life you lead, your mind is your own.
Thanks ya'll. I don't believe violence as an answer (although I was tempted, trust me!), I will use the legal means at my disposal to deal with this guy. Woke up a little late today, needed the extra rest after a swingy session - and just realized it's Pride month! Happy Pride! 😀

Sorry to hear you were subject to that kind of abuse. Seems like a valid reason to ban the player from the casino.

Thanks a lot, I wish some people were more accepting.
Running meh at plo, seems the norm lately, got squeezed and re-squeezed in an action game with AKQ84ds a and k high suits, bricked, but won almost $1,000 at the 20/40 mix with KKQQT in Omaha and a couple hands in 2-7 held too. Now at hold em. Won AA on AK88 versus A4s for the full double earlier. At least I’m winning decently today and the market is still roaring.
Edit: just got the full double with 77 in single raised pot on 762dd versus 64o, I cbet he shipped $1,700 eff. Wow.
That's my kind of opponent! Lucky you.
Wrapped up the session losing at plo again, flopping royal draw with QQJJ9ds on AK8hh versus a flatted AA pre, I bet/called off at a medium spr and bricked. Also lost AKKQ7ds multiway and lost the main pot to an extremely bad winner who brags and makes everyone else who lost feel like crap (he also told me to kill myself once a while ago...nice guy). Fed up, I left for 2/5 where I won a few pots, QQ held against ?? all in pre and JJ held in multiway 3! pot.
Good sleep, up during the day again which is nice, enjoying the sun and caffeine and music. I feel a mental reset in the making! I might even go for a walk.
After losing some at 2/5 (77<43 in 3! pot 332 flop), played plo well into the day to hunt this whale who sat down at our table, except he got me instead, flopping top set in 3! pot against my AA + nfd. Made some back with dsAA against ?? on 943dd in 3! pot spr 1, but then lost with a draw to top set and called it a session as the whale stacked most of the table and quit after bumping up the game to 5/5/15. Not playing my best towards the end there, was tired and missed a value bet, also folded a wrap on a fd board where bettor had top set nfd, probably should have called but I was OOP. Posted a small loss on the day. Woke up after the sun set, annoying to get going through a rough patch, only winning a little this month so far and it's mostly due to hold 'em. It'll turn around, just gotta be patient and let the game come to me.
Booked good wins at plo5 and 5/T,nice change of pace from the doldrums as of late, then played 50/100/100 briefly to try it out but it was short-handed and not great by the time I got a seat and lost a little there, raised AA once and got no action, TT held but a bunch of off-suit broadways went nowhere. Asked the host if I could maybe get a seat when the game is full ring sometime. Will see!
Lost a lost back towards the end of my long session, 99+nfd lost to QQ picking up nut hearts ott on Q92, then an annoying 5/T session where I always seemed to have second best hands given the action and had to deal with two friends who may have been colluding playing at the same table. Booked a small win in the end. Still a very modest winning month so far.
Woke up super early, a least it's technically during the day (wee morning hours more like it, the sun isn't out yet), enjoying my lattes and toxic by britney spears, watching gazzy's latest vlog, a bit annoyed at the recent bleh plo run, I guess it can't always be up and up.
Meeting some friends for lunch later today, will be fun.
Playing with friends at same table is fun if you are going after each other like anyone else, not so fun for the rest of the table when you are not. A few comments yesterday about it, so when I quit I said "nice playing with both of you in the same hand," prompting snickers from the table.
Arrived to the poker room early in the morning to see a 5/5 plo was still running on fumes, ran well there short-handed and heads up and won a $200 flip at the end to book a $1,500 win in an hour or so there, then got bluffed in a pretty big pot at 1/2 plo by someone I could have looked up especially holding good blockers and versus a line that wasn’t entirely adding up. It was such a bad bluff I figured he couldn’t be bluffing. Alas lol…he showed it to my face too. Lost nfd+nut gutter and top pair as well.
Left for 5/T where I lost with a set on a monotone flop to a flush and doubled with KK to AQs, about even here before lunch with a friend soon.
At this rate it will be a decently winning month but no records broken. I guess I’m spoiled and making a couple dimes isn’t what it used to be. Blessings.
Ran bad at the smaller plo game losing dsKK to two A-high hands in a bloated 5! pot, A still came on the flop but the spr was so tiny I still got it in, then got a seat in the 50/100 game again and was pretty card dead but got a double with 99 in a straddled pot, later bled down again and got stacked AQo versus AA after I 3! and got 4! there was no folding for my stack size 30bb eff. Chipped up again after rebuying with a couple good hands and called it a day pretty tired stuck a couple grand or so. The month is still early and at least I’m getting invited to the big game.
Happy to make some progress moving up again in stakes, would be nice to run better early to give me a little confidence though.
Good start to the day, slept way in, woke up early afternoon and downed my caffeine music and poker vlogs, filled up the tank and back at it.!
Session is going horridly, lost AA all in pre with top set to back door wheel 34, winner was ready to muck until his neighbor looked over at his untabled hand and repeated “you have a straight, you have a straight, table your hand.” Went off on the player (who definitely knows better) for being a total a hole. Lost top two to a fd as well, and top pair bdfd bd wrap to AA nfd in 3! pot spr 1. Already stuck a couple grand. At least Annie is in the room, hopefully she plays 2/5 again and I can join her game.
Edit: got the double KK versus ?? against the a hole, threw in a “good call”
for good measure and let him know my neighbor whispered I had top boat. Hehehe…
Made a stellar comeback from down a couple grand to up $1,400, last hand I flopped nut wrap nfd no pair and flop checked through, turn K checked through too and river at least I got to check raise with the nut straight, but sad to get so little value with such a monster. Someone allegedly checked top three pair…on the turn…eek! Anyway, happy to book a win for a change at plo and get some sleep after a long 13-hour session. It was nice to run good again finally. AA nfd nut gutter and low open ender got there in a decent pot too.

It's definitely bad etiquette to help someone else read their hand they haven't tabled. But based on your posts in here I'd guess that you rub quite a few people the wrong way and that's going to attract these sorts of things. For example you saying "good call" after you win. Totally unnecessary. Any sympathy I might have had for you goes out the window when you act like that. Haven't you ever heard "two wrongs don't make a right"? At least try to be aware that these things that are happening to you might not be happening in a vacuum. You might be a key part of the equation in a lot of these interactions. You can't control other people's actions but you can control yours. If you don't want to attract so many of these negative interactions maybe try to think about the things you could be doing differently to avoid these situations.
Do you think I'm right? Or do you think this a-hole would have told this guy to table his hand no matter what? If it's a bad player who's money everyone is going after it would make sense another reg would prefer him to win over you, I get that. But if this other reg knows you would extend the same courtesy to him he might have shut up in that situation. The best way to handle this situation is to just tell him one player per hand and that each player is responsible for reading the board and their hand until it's tabled, not antagonize him after you win a pot vs him. Say "It's ok but please don't do it again." But now everyone at the table probably wants to do it to you. Antagonizing him after the fact is very childish behavior and only going to lead to more negative interactions.
I remember I accidentally did this once eighteen years ago at Chumash. Someone tabled 8 high, the other guy was about to muck and I just blurted out "You can't beat 8 high?" without thinking about it. The dude tipped me $5 and I gave it to the dealer. Later on that dealer, Wakana was her name (how do I remember so much?), she said she was surprised I said anything because she knows I know better and I apologized and said I just blurted out my thought. She was cool about it. She also told me that guy never tips which is just awful. People who don't tip are such misers but that's a whole different conversation.
Good luck! Keep calm and poker on!
I literally physically stopped a fish from mucking on a broadway board a few months back against the biggest douchebag in the room.
Dealer had announced chop pot already (obviously wrong to do) and it induced new player fish to try to muck his hand not realizing he had to table to get half the pot.
Was what I did wrong / against the rules? Yes.
Would I do it again in an instant against the dbag opponent of fish? Absolutely.
Floor even thanked me afterwards because everyone hates the dbag lol.
Just to give more context — I’ve gone out of my way to be really nice to the guy who called out his neighbor’s hand, I’d done nothing to rub him the wrong way until now. All our interactions had been positive. I try to make it a fun atmosphere when he’s playing because he does the same. He probably just wanted the fish to have the money. I felt a small slowroll in a small pot for good measure was appropriate payback. It was quite a large pot he did it to me in and everyone at the table agreed it was major foul play of him. I even announced he had a slowroll coming his way after he said it, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise.
Everyone knows to shut up in these situations and he broke the rule in a big pot. People misread their hands or miss things all the time and it’s a cost of the game. You don’t get a buddy to help you play, and hand reading is part of playing the game. I wouldn’t do the same thing to him if the shoe was on the other foot because I know better. (As does he.) It just seemed like a big stab in the back or betrayal given our previously friendly interactions. But maybe I have too high of expectations from strangers at a poker table and I should expect this kind of thing at this point.
