1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

Played a massive pot with one pair tonight, it was. 3! pot at spr 3 and I got there against 2435 on Q24r for piles with AQJJTds. Not the worst stack off at this spr with top pair and overs and bdnfd. 😀

Took a dinner break to relax and cool off and gonna finish the session strong. Up a few grand right now. Raaawr! Let the comeback begin.

Lost some back at the end wrap fd and top pair to nfd bottom pair and AKQ93ds to AJ874 both against table spot. Up $2,230.

$68,373 to go.

Woke up a little late, needed the rest I guess, will adjust my schedule when I wake up tomorrow again. I am pleased with my progress this month, approving nods and glares when I lose from the colluding couple notwithstanding. I am starting a challenge within a challenge: $15,000 by the end of the month. It is an achievable goal mainly for my confidence and to maintain focus. Having a $100,000 challenge is longer-term and can seem daunting at times especially facing a couple week break-even stretch in the beginning of it.

Played with my student at the same plo table, his first session didn't go great, mainly losing with AA (welcome to plo5!), but he also ran top boat into quads. At least he enjoys the game.

Hopped in the 20/40 mixed game, made a couple 8 lows in badeucy and scooped one, chopped the other, a T low 7 dugi scooped in razzdugi, off to a good start for the mini-challenge!! I am getting much better at the mix over time, I can tell I am plugging leaks like overlimping bad three card draws in the draw games and not calling weaker hands in the blinds to an open.

Lost with three aces in stud..definitely my worst game by far and my least favorite!

Ran pretty well except one hand at plo, JT975 versus A7532 on 468r, I had 70% equity with my freeroll and 4% to lose and he went runner runner flush, I shipped a board-pairing turn and he still made the call too. So tilting! Ended up making around $1,388 on the day. Quit when the game got mediocre and I needed to get to sleep relatively early anyway.

Sat down the other night after my dinner break with what I left with (over $4k) and half the table including colluding couple frantically told me to take the money off the table and come in for the $700 max, lol. I told them I was playing earlier so I could buy in for everything I had on the table previously.

Mini challenge: $13,622 to go.

Mega challenge: $66,985 to go.

Woke up with the sun shining as planned, good 9 hours of sleep, feeling like a light exercise day and maybe a walk.

Plo looked mediocre so I jumped in a decent 5/T/25 where IÂ’m card dead so far. Cool sweatshirt someone was wearing yesterday:

.

Staying patient letting game come to me not forcing it. Resisted the temptation to play the big mixed game which was running.

Got AKo stacked a shorty.

Sitting in 5/T and Argentinian pro moaning about getting nuts against second nuts every hand during his trip is shipping $1,000 every hand blind. Omg….got him once with JJ against his 62o. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such an epic meltdown. We’re paying his time for him.

#mentalgame

Up around $900, at 5/T/25 chopped AA v. T9s on 642r, V crai I called in 3! pot and he went 9-9 on first runout lol. Very nice fellow, couldn't be mad at him, we chatted about the faous line from Fight club, "[people working jobs they hate to buy things they don't need.]"

Woke up a little earlier as planned with the sun out, very nice weather may go for a walk.

Mini-challenge: $12,722.

Big challenge: $66,085.

Fantastic! Go get him. I am envious 😉

Wasn’t interested in sitting in a nitty-looking 2/5 while I waited for plo so instead I am enjoying a little early evening sun and view of the harbor:

Wellness.

Lost AA nfd to wrap in plo4 round of mix (we ran it twice…Yeesh), then left after a little more dicking around at mix for plo5 where I immediately got the double JJ on J high flop. Running hot..!!!!

Rip…!

Running well tonight again. A little gay penguin energy.

Up $2,480, mini challenge: $10,242.

AQJJT on Q96 won verus low wrap at 10/10, some AA held at 1/2 as well.

Big challenge: $63,605. Almost $20k month. $100 a hour. Super happy how things have turned around…after a brutal start! Perseverance.

Woke up earlier than normal for some house stuff, gonna play maybe take a nap later depending on how I feel.

Won AKJT9 nut diamonds on AQTdd last night, J turn freerolled naked KQ with three pair nfd and got there! Funny because earlier V cockily said to me "there's no way I can lose this hand" with just AA nfd gutter when I had top set...and there was literally no way I could lose THIS hand!

Another gay penguin article…

.

Some great advice from an og of poker..

Up $1,159 tonight from plo, won top set versus three straights on 864, lost top set AA in 3! pot, all good though.

Big challenge: $62,446. Mini challenge: 9,083.

Had a rough sleep night, overheard toxic pro lying to management yesterday about never having spoken to me and me spreading false rumors about his treatment of me...wow what a dude.

Still got 10 hours but it took a while to finally get to bed, lots of anxiety and insomnia. Sun is shining now outside, feeling like it's gonna be a good day! Excited about wrapping up the mini challenge soon and then on to finishing the big one.

Watched some big o stream with Greg vail commentating. Some questionable stuff he mentions …like choosing low variance lines with AA932ds and not 4! it pre. Not my style at all.

Lost an AA pre, AA open ender double bdnfd to top set and at 10/10 AKKQTds to two garbage hands. Flopped nfd they both made a straight. The grind goes on….

Well that was terrible…worst session ever.

But I am very honored that I am seeing so many 1/2 5 card players following me to 10/10 recently to take a shot. It’s great for the game!

Had a good chat with a friend who also had a much rougher day than me. Gonna have another shortly with another friend also running bad lately. Nice to have so much support. Blessings.

I heard getting a seat at the 10/10 game is really hard, anyone know a short cut?

Sorry you had a bad session. Glad you have others to commiserate with.

Lost around $10k, to get into a semi-private game you need to build relationships with players in the game be a familiar face and you are more likely to get invited. Also be ready to give action and be a friendly likeable guy.

Thanks for the support, Javanewt. Lost AA AK9 flop to whale's QJT almost all in pre and AJT98 to KQJT8 at the end before I quit.

10k is not a big loss if you’re playing 10/10 5 card PLO with a straddle. How much do you buy in for? There is a mandatory straddle am I correct?
