President Donald Trump

I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?

So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at

It would seem that Trump has a flaw in his attempt to bully some of the automakers to relocate and/or expand into the USA or else pay the tariffs and get punished.

What if one (or all) of Ford, GM or Stellantis tell Trump what the future really holds if they are considering expanding or relocating to the US....

1) An uncertain environment where trade deals are abandoned and tariff targets and amounts are constantly changing. Businesses hate uncertainty and you want us to go all-in with you?

2) if we expand in the US, we see our company on the wrong side of relationships with all the enemies you are making. Canada, Mexico, UK, EU countries, China, India, Japan and who knows who is next. These countries have options, and you would like us to join you in pissing them off.

Basically, you want us to disassemble the integrated North American automobile manufacturing system so we can hitch our wagon to a person who is unpredictable, making more trade enemies daily, and could also turn on us at anytime as well.

And, your only ally is Russia

I think we'll pass..

our shared values?

you arent part of "us", your values don't mean diddly squat in America

I generalized the topic to western countries which is what I wrote as the same debate is happening in the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Italy and so on

Don't forget North Korea and it's flourishing automobile market!

Leavitt's an idiot trying to please her senescent boss who always says 'hoax' about anything he doesn't want to hear.

There may be implications to do with intelligence-sharing by America's Five-Eyes allies, particularly as the 'private chat' reveals how Americans casually despise the allies they depend on. (The US has just parked an unprecedented seven B-2 stealth bombers on the British airfield at Diego Garcia, for some reason, and they can only be there with British permission, and the Royal M

The US is an enormously large and powerful economy. When it engages in a trade war, it will be serious for those targeted. Basically, they will have to have to make backroom deals, or they will end up as economical roadkill. They'll have to do that very gingerly, but I think we can read between the lines and see that it has already been happening.

This doesn't mean these trade wars are good for the US economy. And even in the most rosy-hued historical re-imagining of the 1800s where we ignore how interconnected trade is today, it would still have to be done in a predictable and competent manner, which is simply not how Trump or his administration operates. China will of course exploit this by trying to position itself as the trustworthy superpower and building the basis for a world economy with less soft power for the US in it.

As for intelligence work, I suspect very few in that sector was very surprised at the revelation in the Atlantic. You had stories with the same undercurrent in Trump's first term, plus his theft of classified information and refusal to handle the aftermath professionally.

Basically, Trump is a moron and he appoints a lot of morons. To make matters worse, they all think they are very clever and refuse to handle their mistakes properly.

However, what intelligence officials likely get from this story is political support. Now that the public can clearly see the arrogance, stupidity and weakness on clear display, it will be harder to deny that intelligence cooperation with the US has to be reviewed on the basis that any information you provide must be seen as potentially compromised and in the hands of foreign adversaries after a short while.

There is of course also the question about whether the US itself is a foreign adversary or positioning itself to become one.

Trump is really embracing the culture wars. Obviously he's has dumb as a rock so this is not something he's thought about or can even process, so I continue to be interested in who is the actual brains behind all of this

Trump targets 'anti-American ideology' at Smithsonian museums

The Trumpets wailing about Hillary's emails seem very quiet now.

Waiting for their talk points to spam, I guess...which currently has been less than coherent.
(sorry Luciom, ironically, you probably don't get invited into this chat).

The order directs the vice-president to "eliminate improper, divisive, or anti-American ideology" from the institute's museums, centres and the National Zoo in Washington.

WSJ: Trump Warned U.S. Automakers Not to Raise Prices in Response to Tariffs

When President Trump convened CEOs of some of the country’s top automakers for a call earlier this month, he issued a warning: They better not raise car prices because of tariffs.

Trump told the executives that the White House would look unfavorably on such a move, leaving some of them rattled and worried they would face punishment if they increased prices, people with knowledge of the call said

Those darn socialist democrats...raising input costs for car makers but threatening them if they raise prices to cover their costs.

There's a nazi-coded shitblizzard slowly engulfing the USA, given the ominous FUD being applied on businesses like automakers, the attacks on law firms, museums and places of higher learning, weaponizing of DoJ, and DOGE getting their grubby fingers in the election process.

Who the hell is masterminding this, cos it sure aint Dumb (Leon) and Dumber (Donnie).

Or is that my TDS talking?

Remember when all the trumptards were up in arms because Kamala was going to push grocers not to raise their prices. Good times.

Well, it isn't like most of us didn't see it coming.

she proposed legislation/executive action to achieve that, trump (for now) just talks.

I knew were we were going, but still surprised how relentless and fast it's been. I did assume Donnie would be like term 1, get bored quick after 2 months of ****-talking, and then spend the remaining 3.8 years golfing.

Who the **** is masterminding this?

The likes of Stephen Miller, the ones who actually do believe in fascism.

I'm sure she would have been successful. She definitely would have had them lower the price on alcohol.

Trump doesn't need legislation / EO - the companies understand the weight of his implied threats.

Do you think this is better or worse?

Like would you rather the executive give public statements and propose legalization to achieve goals or just call industry head in behind closed doors and browbeat them and no one hears about it until a month later if it leaks.

I think using the actual power of the state to attempt to achieve an illegitimate goal is far worse than attempting to use moralsuasion yes.

Not sure why you think he can browbeat car companies especially when he cares a lot about jobs in that sector so any attempt to "punish" them would backfire for his own goals.

I don’t understand how you can consider the threat of government power to be any different than the actual use. For example - these law firm EOs. Trump targets a few firms with these, and one or two bend the knee. Now stories are out that other firms are back channeling to avoid a similar order coming out to target them. Trump himself gave an interview claiming firms are falling over themselves to deal with him rather than be hurt.

As for the car tariffs, I brought that up as an example of intimidation using private conversations rather than public governmental acts. I wasn’t saying I thought it was going to actually work. In fact, I think we would both agree that this is terrible for him and will backfire. And yet they’re still doing it…

The threat of abuses of gvmnt power would be serious but we don't have any proof of that for car companies especially given as I said we know for a fact he cares a lot about employment in that sector (unlike say in colleges or law firms).

The likes of Stephen Miller, the ones who actually do believe in fascism.

yep, it's this dude

Miller lasted through all of Trump 1, unlike some 90% of Trump's other staff, and he got brought back for Trump 2. I think part of his success lies in the fact that he seems to have no interest in stealing any of Trump's spotlight; Miller doesn't want to become personally famous, he's truly politically minded.

I also remember someone claiming that Miller and a few other smart people intentionally placed their office a floor up from the Oval Office or wherever Trump spends most of his time, because Trump is well-known to hate climbing and descending stairs (ffs), and so Miller et. al. is never the target of Trump's regular furious rants, which occasionally escalate into firings.

Dunno if it's true, but it's fun to think about, so, hey. I think it was maybe Maggie Haberman who reported this.

Edit: for the record, I'm kinda terrified of Stephen Miller. He is one Adolf Eichmann-style mother...

I guess the Trump admin is just openly doing Putin's bidding.

I’m thinking of the Alwsys Sunny implication scene. “Oh don’t look at me, you wouldn’t be in any danger”.
