President Donald Trump
I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?
So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at
naw, it's great. i love paying more for ****. sign me up
LOL stupid ****ing MAGATs
it's great.
carry on
Are we sure this tariff issue is a bad thing? I get it if you hate Trump it is.
This just sounds like a bunch of poor sports in here.
Very hard to get serious detailed analyis at the moment but it's best it's a very dangerous game requiring great skill and a deft touch.
Like most of us 'poor sports' I very much doubt trumps grasp on all this (to put it mildly). But as per usual no-one really knows how this will all play out.
or there is some vague sense even in the pro tariff world, given the UK didn't have a trade surplus with the USA it's already incredible to have any tariff at all but at least they are lower
I dunno but there's a fair bit of noise about some deal whereby we in the uk give trump & co a lot of what they want on meat imports, digital services tax etc in return for some deal
It's not so much the tariffs we charge the usa as food standards, regulation, taxing profits etc
(This plus defense pretty much encapuslated why I was so against brexit).
Seems many of the tariff numbers in his list are completely made up. 39% EU Tariffs? Wat. South Korea is not tariffing the US at 50%
They might all be completely made up. 90% Vietnam tariffs? On what?
Nasdaq futures down 4.5%

man tariffs suck and I say this from the right of trump on economics.
you can try to justify them on non economic terms here or there for some stuff, it's usually just an excuse, but in those cases they tend to be less disastrous because being targeted (to a sector or country) they don't disrupt the whole economy too much.
but lol paying more for all imported stuff when you are near full employment in particular is just ******ed.
it's not like you can manufacture everything yourself ESPECIALLY if you don't want a ton of immigration.
there aren't unemployed skilled welders or factory machine operators lying around waiting for a manufacturing resurgence. there isn't a ton of underutilized factory capacity that you can just turn on if needed.
most Americans capable and willing to contribute to production already do.
you are just going to pay more for the same stuff in most cases
Cockwomble gonna cockwomble.

I think they had to come up with a virtual number (that includes stuff that isn't explicitly a tariff but that you can "translate" into a tariff stretching the definition) to justify the retaliatory tariffs in a stronger way under IEEPA.
in theory IEEPA has a broad scope but the more he builds a case (however thin) to justify the tariffs under the law (the "emergency" that justifies them) the more his chances of that to hold in court.
they are counting non tariff barriers, fines to american companies, Digital service taxes, and VAT.
like some EU rules apply if you do x size of business worldwide, that's for them is a targeted tariff like tax on American big companies, what happens outside the EU should never enter into any consideration (they are actually right here).
Remember when the economy was so bad we needed trump to save us from financial ruin?
Hi guys
Probably a silly question but purely from a good bet situation/ bit of value, what do you guys think?
I don’t do politics and have absolutely no clue really so don’t be too harsh.
I saw Corey Bookers speech and thought (Republican or democrat let’s be neutral, that could be the next president of the USA speaking)
And so I had a few quid on him at 100/1 and see he has been going 80/1 to 50/1 with British books through the day,
So had a go on him at 100/1, but would anyone in the know of American politics like to tell me the real story and whether I should back him more or not?
Thanks a lot, Jon from the UK
I went and checked every single country that we have a trade surplus with from this list: https://wits.worldbank.org/CountryProfil...
100% showed up as 10/10 on the list
except Belgium, which doesn't seem to appear at all
