President Donald Trump

I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?

So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at

How do any of you know it's a stupid idea? I know the Trump haters don't like it. I've seen plenty of evidence this is exactly what we needed. I don't know for sure how this will end up but I do know the doom and gloom is premature.

Yeah, there are still almost 9 hours until the NYSE/NASDAQ free fall starts.

Is the market fall catching you by surprise?

I know it was only two words and you probably missed it and are not evading the question because you're holding nothing but a bag of dogshit, so please respond:

Post evidence.

I'm grunching here, but the freefall started last week.

Here is a 1 hour video that does in-depth on the tariffs. This guy reverse engineered the formula they used to determine the tariffs for each country, and its even more ******ed that you could imagine. It has horrible assumptions all over the place. Like it assumes any trade imbalance is strictly due to unfair policies. Never mind that different countries have different natural resources and skill sets.....

There was nothing to reverse engineer. Pretty basic math that they attempted to make look fancy and sophisticated with a lot of unnecessary Greek letters

Yeah. Steal US IP and use slave labor to make products screw you tariffs. Sell us a crop or raw material that cannot be made in the US, also screw you tariff. Putting people that don't put any thought into things might not have been smart.

Explain to me how wiping out 5+ trillions in less then a week (and probably more coming ) helps in anyway Americans …

Cockwomble cratering continues

To any morons insisting this is a blip or not a big deal, I think this deserves restating:

by diebitter k

There's no market bounce coming.

There's not even a dead cat bounce.

It's more the cannonball fired deliberately into the floor bounce.

Which isn't a bounce, it's a blast crater.

It's all so predictable, Trump thinks China will blink, and they won't. EU will be concerned by both Trump and cheap goods dumping from China and will react to deal with both. Trump won't blink either until the GOP rebel, which I don't think they will with any solidarity. Only the people can stop this, and I don't have much faith in that either. People might start dying at protests even.

Trade wars inevitable, crash inevitable.

Definitely starting to feel like a grift for the billionaires to buy up a load of cheap stock. I doubt Trump is even knowingly in on that, he's just been manipulated into it - you'd be wiser to keep such a dumdum in the dark about things. Watch that space, and remember if Trump does it once, he will almost certainly be manipulated to do something similar again before his term is up.

Musk to become the worlds first trillionaire?

60 Minutes segment about the 238 sent to a Salvadoran mega-prison. The Trump administration says they’re all gang members, but 60 Minutes could find no criminal records for 75 percent of them. The guy they said is a gang member (Andry Hernandez Romero) is actually a gay hair dresser.

FTSE down 5% today already, looks like it's stabilised now tho

Only 5 and a bit hours till American stock markets open, and there's so much winning.

President Trump has launched a “global economic war against the whole world” that will usher in an “economic nuclear winter”, said a high-profile Wall Street financier and Trump supporter.

Ackman, a vocal supporter of Trump during the election, said: “By placing massive and disproportionate tariffs on our friends and our enemies alike and thereby launching a global economic war against the whole world at once, we are in the process of destroying confidence in our country as a trading partner, as a place to do business, and as a market to invest capital.”

So much winning.

AP: Judge says deportation of Maryland man to an El Salvador prison was ‘wholly lawless

The U.S. government’s decision to arrest a Maryland man and send him to a notorious prison in El Salvador appears to be “wholly lawless,” a federal judge wrote Sunday in a legal opinion explaining why she had ordered the Trump administration to bring him back to the United States.

There is little to no evidence to support a “vague, uncorroborated” allegation that Kilmar Abrego Garcia was once in the MS-13 street gang, U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis wrote. And in any case, she said, an immigration judge had expressly barred the U.S. in 2019 from deporting Abrego Garcia to El Salvador, where he faced likely persecution by local gangs.

“As defendants acknowledge, they had no legal authority to arrest him, no justification to detain him, and no grounds to send him to El Salvador — let alone deliver him into one of the most dangerous prisons in the Western Hemisphere,” Xinis wrote.

She said it was “eye-popping” that the government had argued that it could not be forced to bring Abrego Garcia back because he is no longer in U.S. custody.

“They do indeed cling to the stunning proposition that they can forcibly remove any person — migrant and U.S. citizen alike —to prisons outside the United States, and then baldly assert they have no way to effectuate return because they are no longer the ‘custodian,’ and the Court thus lacks jurisdiction,” Xinis wrote. “As a practical matter, the facts say otherwise.”

Not sure the stock being cheap is consistant with the rest. It would make the case for it being a blip and those who are sellling being wrong.

I'ma bit of a moron who isn't as confident about how it will play out with the usa economy as most seeem to be but I suspect a big gain for the rich will be very favourable tax cuts.

Stocks are dirt cheap after a major crash - as long as you have money to invest at that point.

If there is a crash, I would expect to make at least 20-40%, probably more, on a general portfolio in maybe 2 years if I started buying once it craters. The dividends will be good when stocks are cheap, and this will in turn make the price rise as demand returns.

Get it?

Sure buying at the bottom is a great way to make money. One of those strategies that looks awesome after the fact while mamy lose their shirts cos they think it's the bottom

If this is about trump destroying profits and hence value which is the objection to his tariffs then the stocks aren't now cheap, they just reflect the companies being worth less.

I dont think trump/etc have this under control and the real bottom seen by history may be very hard to call.

So yes i think i get it.

Ok but there is a high chance markets are overestimating the relevancy of international trade especially for some names that don't necessarily make their money in ways linked to international trade.

The portion of devaluation linked to generic increased recession fears is typically the part that allows you to buy "low" (relatively speaking)

You buy when the average P/Es are close to or in single digits. At that point, even if it continues to drop it's still a good investment.

Maybe the share market stuff needs its own thread, as it's gonna dominate this thread for the time being?

It may well become a good investment again but that doesn't restore the destroyed value. Unless the billionares sold before the crash or have laods of cash (like buffett might have) I dont think that can be some plan to make them rich). Using this to favour usa companies / restrict foreign regulation etc may make them richer but that's kinda trump's point. Tax cuts can also make them richer

I think a market/economics thread on this is a very good idea.

yes, that's exactly the precondition

Hell, even I saw this coming and sold off everything in stocks before the first tariff skirmishes. If I know-nothing like me saw it, then...

but the billionaires like musk etc can't sell it off like we can.

Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk alone lost a combined $42 billion in the first day according to a quick google. Going to be a lot more by now.

I do remember some major dumping happening in November last year, but can't find out much about more recently.

Also, Elon's was moaning about tariffs, which is a contra-indication.

Maybe I'm seeing a plan that isn't there...

I do know if you look into any major crashes, it's the very rich that come out of it even richer.

by mongidig k

You guy's lost. Trump won and is President. I'm not tired of winning. Are you tired of whining?

Yep, the stupids won. We already knew that. I admit I underestimated the magnitude of stupid though.
