In other news

In the current news climate we see that some figures and events tend to dominate the front-pages heavily. Still, there are important, interesting or just plain weird things happening out there and a group of people can find these better than one.

I thought I would test with a thread for linking general news articles about "other news" and discussion. Perhaps it goes into the abyss that is page 2 and beyond, but it is worth a try.

Some guidelines:
- Try to find the "clean link", so that links to the news site directly and not a social media site. Avoid "amp-links" (google).
- Write some cliff notes on what it is about, especially if it is a video.
- It's not an excuse to make outlandish claims via proxy or link extremist content.
- If it's an editorial or opinion piece, it is polite to mark it as such.
- Note the language if it is not in English.
- There is no demand that such things be posted here, if you think a piece merits its own thread, then make one.

You and I have very different definitions of privilege.

It's fine to do that--just don't try to BS people with meritocracy fairytales.

If she somehow doesn't land on her feet immediately out of college, I'll make a few calls and fix it in about 20 minutes.

Ah. The famous 'classless society'.

Ah. The famous 'classless society'.

For it to be classless, that should be true even if his daughter was terribly under average at everything.

But he claimed she is way above average in educational outcomes (so IQ), which is why the idea of a few calls fixing any problem isn't a class issue. The same calls could be made by a teacher that took her into serious consideration for ex.

In a society where class is actually important, the IQ 88 daughter of a upper middle class person has a way better income and status path in life than the IQ 112 daughter of a low-middle class parent. That's not the case at all in the USA nor that comes out of inso comments.

In the USA if your parents make 150k per year you are NOT much more likely to marry someone who makes 150k per year than if your parents make 55k. And that's how class is preserved , through inter-class marriage.

“88”

A number less than 100 clearly chosen at random.

you deeply misunderstand this

to lift yourself up by your bootstraps is a physically impossible task, it is used to say that nothing can be done except to joke about how ****ed you are

I only heard the main metaphor of overcoming difficulty by sheer force of will.
I.e the american dream where everyone can become rich or someone through hard work.

I'm sure you understood which meaning I was refering to.

Im pretty sure the genesis of it was the right being *******s by telling people who cant help themselves to do the impossible anyway and stfu. Maybe ita the redneck in me but it was clear as day that they were asking them to do somehing that they couldnt.

...but phrases evolve so who knows who its used now. Its likely interpreted as pulling up your pants or some dumb ****.

to be symmetric with 112 and within one sigma (which is usually 15 for IQ), not sure what you mean here

She has been a perfect 4.0 student her entire life and carried that into university life so far. She'll stand head and shoulders above all the other riffraff in the job market and I try to remind her that the many many millions of people out there living their best lives aren't spending their free time complaining to everyone who will listen.

If she somehow doesn't land on her feet immediately out of college, I'll make a few calls and fix it in about 20 minutes. There are a million opportunit

I think you're pretty delusional about the current job market. Like 10-15 years ago if you were unambitious you could just get a job at Microsoft, Apple, Meta etc just show up put in your 40 hrs a week not be terrible at the technical aspects and you could plan on retiring there. Now tech has become like finance where that's not going to cut it. Your daughter seems to know a lot more than you if she realizes a 4.0/ gold star in 3rd grade spelling doesn't mean much.

Sure. Choosing one sigma (15) ie 85 so natural but silly trolling fool Luciom can't resist the Adolf.

My understanding of the statement as well.

This is how I always understood it as well.

How could a computer possible get started without human intervention when it needs to follow instructions to follow instructions.

That's by far the most common usage currently. Similar to walked to school uphill both ways, a camel/rope passing through the eye of a needle etc. Am impossible task used to illustrate difficulty. I don't recall it ever being used as a synonym for impossible task like a cambric shirt with no needle work in Scarborough Fair.

8 is my favorite number and sometimes you have to use 88 when 8 is taken and boy do random people on reddit think thats some massive dog whistle

I literally used 88 because the wi-fi password in the chinese joint i went to dine that evening was 88888888 (which i gather is a good luck thing for them) so i had the 88 in my head

88 is numerical code for Heil Hitler, H being the eight letter of the alphabet. 88 is a well known neo nazi code, so maybe that's what Jal thought you meant, not without merit, in fairness, due to it being generally well known, even if you didn't personally mean this. I don't know the 112 reference. 12 is used by the Aryan Brotherhood but again I never heard of 112.
