Moderation Questions

Moderation Questions

The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.

This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.

Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.

Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.

So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.

Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.

So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.

We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.

Thanks.

I change my mind all the time

So, USA#1?

by mongidig k

I agree. Everybody has chosen their side and nothing is gonna change their mind.

It's telling that you think that.

by Victor k

I agree that we should be able to speak our minds

I know how you feel and you know how I feel. Why can't we voice how we really feel about what each other say's? It's very strange how a person would think everybody in the I/P thread should get along. This conflict has been going on for many years and it's not pretty. The conversation in the I/P thread should mirror what is going on in reality. It's a big waste of time having a watered down highly moderated version of real life.

It's telling that you think that.

What's it telling you?

by mongidig k

What's it telling you?

That you won't change your mind no matter what facts are presented. You projecting it on to others is not surprising.

trending the opposite direction. but you never know! Trump's incompetence may bump us back up a few spots at this rate.

What's the latest mod policy in the i/p thread? Do i still have to pretend that posters [redacted], [redacted] and [redacted] aren't antisemitic?

If you're unable to tell criticism of the Israeli government and criticism of Jewish people apart and keep conflating the two that makes you the anti-Semitic one according to how it's defined.

by mongidig k

That's what I want to know. Do we still have to walk on eggshells and hope someone isn't having a bad day? Most importantly can we have fair and consistent modding that is appropriate for a very emotional thread? I'd like to point out that since the recent MOD replacement the discussion has become smoother and as far as I can see nobodies feelings have been hurt.

Here's a good rule of thumb. If you have a burning need to figure out exactly where the line is so you can tiptoe as close to it as possible, you have a problem.

If this was about insulting people, or going ad hominem, i would agree.

When this is about "which political content that is legal in my country is illegal here" i don't think there is any problem in the person trying to understand how much he can discuss political stuff he cares about (and which parties do campaign over!)

Not for me and i got accused multiple times by mods of that, because i get "too dangerously" close to "racism" or "transphobia" and so on (again, we are talking campaign points of actual parties, stuff elected politicians or candidates say)

the line is different for everyone.

Nothing you've said is remotely close to illegal, at least in the USA. I think people who want you banned want it because they think your opinions are vile.

Luciom predictably in with the I should be able to voice fascist opinions as they're the policies of actual parties now. Why don't you just come out and give us a taste of whatever it is you obviously want to say?

You are probably an exception. You don't care much about insulting people, and I know that you would like detailed guidance on how much advocacy of violence, race science, etc., the mods will tolerate.

Correct. Legality has nothing to do with it.

It is certainly true that people have complained for years that you have been treated with kid gloves. (I don't necessarily agree. I'm just noting that this has been a consistent complaint.)

Yet when he does choose to hurl insults at people, telling them, for instance, the only way they will ever be useful to...r and that anything that eliminates people like the..., those posts stay up.

He has nothing to complain about.

My point is I don't want to have to do any tip toeing. I simply want to speak my mind. I have no intent on attacking or hurting anybody. I just don't want to be getting used to what is acceptable by the new MOD and then one day the old MOD say's they are back and starts banning people.

by Rococo k

From Luc,,,, VERY little is acceptable.

Yet... Luc, you must absolutely see that your racists posts seem to avoid deletion MORE than others. Perhaps the mods need to have you check your privilege at the door.

There is no line to straddle for you Luc. Lifetime Achievement Award.

mong.... it will always be that way.

Let me ask you this: the american VP just went to Europe to make a speech, how can it make sense for an american political forum not to be allowed to discuss the content of his speech with all it's ramifications, and to endorse it in full or in part?

Vance said various things, among them he criticized immigration policies into the EU very harshly. How is it possible that i cannot elaborate on why i agree with him , with AfD, and the reasons in detail? it's a fundamental political topic of our era.

Yet i am not doing it because it's impossible to do it properly in this forum without getting banned.
