Moderation Questions
The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.
This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.
Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.
Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.
So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.
Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.
So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.
We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.
Thanks.
So we do or we don’t want bans now? Seems almost like it’s very selective based on everyone’s individual agendas. Cool, have fun with that!
Lucy is honestly the only person I’d advocate banning. The guy posts 100 times a day and inevitably every thread in politics becomes derailed by his psychotic eugenics sideshow. Even if you have the guy blocked he is impossible to avoid
Dude is a sociopath without a single take with any value. Forum is better without it
No, the problem is that banning people becomes a norm in itself. If people were to be banned for racism you'd be one of the first, with your support of the neo-Nazis at Charlottesville. Yes, we do remember.
And I’m not sure what male-centered pseudo-reality you claim to occupy and present as truth with a capital T, but bans were always simply for racism, bigotry, and verbal abuse. You’re lasting butthurt over catching a few yourself is not novel or interesting. I was always pretty nice to you iirc. Move along, friend.

I have my faults but this is a quite stunning paragraph of poor reads and it's not surprising your moderation was so poorly received by people across the political divide.
Also, it's "your", not "you're".
Racists want to be racist and Trump haters want to be verbally abusive. That’s my fault how exactly?
Again I’ll ask, why do you have so many feuds with people? It is everyone else, or is it you?
This may come as a shock to you but the owners don’t actually want a subforum where people are freely comparing Muslims to animals, Jews to Nazis, immigrants to parasites, etc. The owners don’t want a little eugenics outpost on their site where people can discuss which race is naturally fatter or lazier or of lesser value to humanity. And plenty of posters don’t want to post in a place where it’s allowed either, including me.
So which of the above are you SO upset about being moderated? Illuminate me.

If this place upsets you so much why are you here?
So that means we only have the Trumpers Trump thread, the 2nd term trump prediction thread, the trump tariff thread and the trump economy and poker thread left.

The owners of a bar might not be overwhelmed with joy about some drinkers spouting racism either, but they don't employ someone to monitor the conversations and either clasp their hand over people's mouths or physically eject them. A lot of people are moderately to severely racist and pretending otherwise by deleting their posts or temp banning them doesn't do any good.

That's an NVG-worthy analogy. Patrons' conversations at a bar aren't transcribed on their walls and/or recorded and replayed whenever the jukebox is idle for posterity. If they were, I suspect your local proprietor might well employ your suggested methods to monitor them more closely and take remedial action when needed.
We're all racists crossnerd

I think its mostly a strategy from the owner's belief on what is best to help the site grow or at least slow down its demise.
They don't want the outright bigotry in print, but they want those posters consistently posting, minus their horrendous takes (reasons for deletions) but also reasons for not perma banning.
I obviously don't know how the revenue exactly works, but I'd imagine that someone like Lucium is going to be good to some degree for overall impressions and clicks when he's posting 100 times a day and everyone else is consistently clicking, fueling an increase in the ads being viewed.
This "feud" is one-sided. I like your posts and look forward to reading them. The only problem I have is your style of moderation. You're the one who's been (and still is) abusive. Maybe you should cast a critical eye at yourself instead?
* waits to be told to **** off again *

You're probably right in which case someone should set up a server job to delete all non-stickied posts older than, say, a month, capping the amount of stored racism at any one time at about 3,000 posts (Luciom's monthly output).

LOL. It's definitely not this. The owners don't give a **** what the mods of the Politics forum do. Ban half the regs. Ban no one. Delete posts. Don't delete posts. Ownership doesn't care. Or if they do care, they don't make their views known to the Politics mods.

As far as I am aware, this site has no revenue streams, and if it does have some revenue streams I'm unaware of, I'm pretty sure they are completely unaffected by the presence of or traffic to this subforum.
Well, like I said, you’re gonna have to be specific about which forms of racism you’re upset that I moderated. Because I only ever banned for bigotry and verbal and abuse. If you want more bigotry, Jal, it’s on the menu now. Be happy 😀
I never want more bigotry but it's important that people are aware of the actual (rather than self or otherwise censored) views of people they're conversing with. You must have noticed how, since the restraints have lifted, most posters have now cottoned on to who Luciom really is? The lack of moderation has worked against him and his agenda.
Bro! I was born Jewish. I had a Bartmitzvah. My parents asked me afterward if I would like to continue my Jewish education. I said hell know, I'm watching football on Sundays and this stuff is weird.
Between your spelling mistakes and you freeing up your Sundays to watch football, you aren’t very convincing that you were ever a practicing Jew. You are definitely in second place behind Luciom for most racist poster but there is a pretty big gap. How Luciom didn’t catch his 99th temp ban or permaban for those posts is beyond me.
But sure, close the thread and just let the POS post whatever he wants….

So you never want more bigotry but also you don’t want to ban Luciom. Got it.
If you wanted to perma Luciom you’ve had plenty of opportunity, so I guess we agree.
It’s about the long term. Giving him enough rope by letting him show the forum who he really is, is far better than a series of temp bans that only teach him to colour between the lines better. As I said, it’s pretty clear that people who were unaware of his real beliefs are now more vocal in their condemnation. When it reaches a critical mass and most of his death wish posts are met with nothing but scorn and derision he might as well leave.
A really poor long term approach to politics and belief.
Language really matters. The need to call people names and run them off may be satisfying but it is is piss poor politics.
No one’s talking about name calling, that’s on you.
Your prescribed remedy of dealing with fascists was put to the test in your dreadful forum that was closed down when it became overrun with fascists who you wanted people to be nice to, one of whom, mongi, is back here again.
