MLS/Liga MX Season Thread Now Featuring Inter Messi

Your Defending Champs:

Canada - MONTRÉAL
MLS Cup - Seattle
US Open Cup - Atlanta
Liga MX - Los Rayados de Monterrey
CONCACAF Champions League - Los Rayados de Monterrey

2020 MLS Cup Odds:

CONCACAF Champions League Bracket:

Biggest Departues:

Nacho Piatti from Impact to San Lorenzo
ZLATAN from LA Galaxy to AC Milan
Wayne Rooney from DC to Derby County
Brian Fernández from Portland to jail (I think)
Nico Gaitán from Chicago to Ligue 1 side Lille

NEW Players (w/summaries just for 72o):

Chicharito to LA Galaxy (age: 31) - needs no introduction. All time leader for El Tri (México) w/51 goals. Broke in w/Man Utd, notching 3 straight 10+ goal seasons, more recently bagged 16 goals in 55 matches for Westham, and comes to LAG from Sevilla.

Claudio Pizarro to Inter Miami (age: 25) - another fairly important piece for El Tri where he has 23 caps. Comes from los Rayados where he's already won a few titles in only a couple seasons. Although probably not a top 3 player for Monterrey, they'll be glad to part with him for the 20 million price tag Inter Miami agreed to pay. When he's on he's very good, but he's also very inconsistent. Should dominate in MLS though imo.

Jürgen Locadia to Cincinnati (age: 26) - IMO, the most interesting signing. Notable in that he's the only player in the top 8 most valuable MLS players who doesn't play in LA or ATL. I'm still not sure how Cincy pulled this off. Big time goalscorer w/45 in 127 matches for PSV Eindhoven. He's be a golden boot frontrunner if he played for a better team.

Mauricio Pereyra to Orlando (age: 29) - Uruguayan attacking mid comes from Russian side Krasnodar w/23 goals in 154 appearances. Caps w/Uruguay's U20s but never made an appearance for the nat'l team.

Alan Pulido to Sporting KC (age: 28) - The Mexican isn't really in the nat'l team picture anymore, but is coming off a great season for Mexican giants Chivas where he finished as joint golden boot winner.

Robert Beric to Chicago (age: 28) - 25 caps with Slovenia and comes from Ligue 1 side Sainte-Étienne w/a pretty solid goal scoring record, 26 goals in 81 matches over 5 seasons.

Lucas Zelarayán to Columbus Crew (age: 27) - The Argentine attacking midfielder has been a key player for Liga MX's best side in recent years, Tigres, with 113 appearances and 21 goals over 5 seasons.

Edison Flores to DC United (age: 25) - Yet another player from Liga MX. The Peruvian winger has been a stalwart for their national team with 13 goals in 47 appearances and was a regular for Morelia over the past 2 seasons.

Felipe Mora to Portland (age: 26) - Wildly inconsistent, but can bang in goals when he's on. Comes from Liga MX's Pumas.

Lucas Cavallini to Puebla (age: 27) - Has been great for Canada w/11 goals in only 17 apps. Another player from Liga MX (Puebla) w/ a very respectable 29 goals in 75 matches for a Liga MX bottom feeder side that doesn't score often.

Luis Binks to MONTRÉAL (age: 19) - Comes from Tottenham's academy thanks to Thierry Henry's connections. Supposedly Tottenham's 2nd best young CB.

Intra-league Moves:

DARWIN from Minnesota to Houston
Walker Zimmerman from LAFC to Nashville
Wil Trapp from Columbus to Inter Miami
Katai from Chicago to LAG
Nagbe from ATL to Columbus
Gressel from ATL to DCU
Romell Quioto from Houston to IMFC

Moment of the season so far:

by 72off k

crazy that brian white has been nearly as productive, and he's just some guy that nyrb didn't want

Which is odd b/c in his time at NYRB he had 14g 4a in less than a full season's worth of minutes, and at 22-24 years old.

Tigres-Crew highlights prob worth checking out for the lulz. They drew leg 1 in Columbus at 1-1 which is probably a result that you'd think would sink the Crew. Even moreso when they gift Tigres a goal early on, but miraculously they pulled it out, so MLS won't be shut out in the semis (all 4 semifinal teams were seemingly gonna be Liga MX).

Messi will have to conjure up some of that old magic tonight if Miami will advance. They lost 2-1 at home and will need a bunch of away goals in Rayados place.

even though the match is in Mexico, I'm expecting a couple of dubious ref calls to go Inter Messi's way tonight (just like vs. Nashville). it would be a boost attention-wise for CCL to have Inter Messi in the final.

Didn't watch, but Miami must have been pathetic. And saw in the highlights that Callender gifted Rayados a goal early.

Miami had only 5 total attempts all game (1 on goal) in a match where Rayados would be content to sit back and soak up pressure. Pathetic.

Don't watch enough to know for sure, but it seems like a GM Lebron situation where Messi just wanted to bring in his friends rather than construct the best squad possible. They're still one of the better MLS squads, but with Messi plus using that money instead on the best players available in North and South America (most of whom would've loved to play with Messi), they could've been something special.

Portland Timbers - Los Angeles FC
DC United - Orlando City
New York City - New England Revolution
New York Red Bulls - Chicago Fire
Charlotte - Toronto FC
CF Montreal - FC Cincinnati
FC Dallas - Seattle Sounders
Sporting Kansas City - Inter Miami

Real Salt Lake - Columbus Crew
San Jose Earthquakes - Colorado Rapids
Vancouver Whitecaps - Los Angeles Galaxy

on the glass half full side for vancouver fans, the canucks got a big win tonight.

But the MLS day belongs to Inter Messi winning at Arrowhead stadium packed with 72k fan...and horrific SKC defense (watch the highlights if u don't believe me!)

coming into today:

Goals + Assists/90
1. Lionel Messi • Inter Miami 2.15
2. Luis Suárez • Inter Miami 1.53
3. Fafà Picault • Vancouver W'caps 1.36
4. Robin Lod • Minnesota Utd 1.34
5. Giorgos Giakoumakis • Atlanta Utd 1.30
6. Josef Martínez • CF Montréal 1.20
7. Dante Vanzeir • NY Red Bulls 1.17
8. Felipe Mora • Portland Timbers 1.16
9. Christian Benteke • D.C. United 1.13
10. Cristian Arango • RSL 1.11

today:

30' Vanzeir D. (Carmona W.) [NYR]
49' Rojas M. (Messi L.) [INT]
51' Messi L. (Suarez L.) [INT]
62' Rojas M. (Messi L.) [INT]
69' Suarez L. (Messi L.) [INT]
75' Suarez L. (Messi L.) [INT]
81' Suarez L. (Messi L.) [INT]
90+7' Forsberg E. (Penalty) [NYR]

starting to think that these guys are ok at the soccering

and hey look, another 5-assist mls game. maybe next time he'll do 6

What do you mean by another 5 assist game, has someone done it before? Vanzeir had 4 assists earlier in a game, and we were wondering if that would tie a record? Anyway, Messi has now blown past that with the 5 assist game (against Vanzeir no less) and even added a goal along with 5 assists. His overall #s are just silly:

8 matches (7 starts), 10 goals, 12 assists

He's had multiple goal contributions in all matches except 1 (only 1 goal in that 1) and he's had at least a goal and an assist in 6 of 8 matches. He also has an ongoing streak of at least 3! goal contributions in 3 straight matches.

He's already missed 4 matches though and they might start to rest him even more before the playoffs. The goals record for a season is 34 by Vela. That's probably out of reach, b/c Messi likes to set up others, but the assist record is 26 (by Valderrama in 2000), and that's a possibility. That's a record that's seemingly been out of reach as the next best tally is 20 assists, but if Messi gets close, I'm sure he could focus on setting up teammates more and break it.

oops yeah thats what i meant, 1+5 a pretty good game huh

even with the copa this year, messi should take a good run at that assist record

solid attacking team

It was a weekend where the team was celebrating their 50th anniversary as a club, and their Saturday match against Austin FC brought out fans in droves. A total of 32,465 fans packed BC Place to see their team play to a 0-0 draw. That is the most fans to ever attend a Whitecaps game in their MLS era.

[...] Sartini went on to say that this won’t be a longstanding record for the Whitecaps as a much larger crowd is expected to pack the stadium in about two weeks when Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF come to the city for the first and only time this season on May 25.

lol yeah kind of funny to set a new record and then smash it again in 3 weeks. not sure what the max capacity is these days but i guess we're about to find out. should be 50-60k

Would you put him up there with MLS legends like Zardes and Wondo?

messi needs a bigger body of MLS work to be mentioned in the same breath as those two

~30th minute: montreal 2 - 0 messi

imfc also had a good pk shout just before the 2nd goal but the ref declined to even look at it, lol pretty shocked over here

rojas ghana messi, 2-1

edit: now 2-2 lol

Hot start to the season for Montreal, but now everyone's injured and they suck again.

3 Miami goals and Messi without a single scorepoint might be a first.

that 2nd quakes goal is legitimately one of the most embarrassing goals I've ever seen conceeded.

timbers really need to be disbanded immediately after that.

wonder how much that ref had bet on vancouver

i mean that was a pk at the end, but yeah overall they seemed to get more decisions than normal. or perhaps he was just letting them play because it's technically a derby

ya don't really have an issue with that being a PK but almost the exact same play on the other end and don't even var it.

Inter Miami CF manager Gerardo "Tata" Martino defended the decision to rest Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets for the game against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday at BC Place,

hope any whitecaps fans going to this didn't fork out a lot of money in advance for tix

there's gonna be a riot

well that's quite an ending in sea.
sea scores to go to up 2-0 in the 96" (9" added).

game ends 1-1.

Socialism now redistributing goals!
