MLS/Liga MX Season Thread Now Featuring Inter Messi

Your Defending Champs:

Canada - MONTRÉAL
MLS Cup - Seattle
US Open Cup - Atlanta
Liga MX - Los Rayados de Monterrey
CONCACAF Champions League - Los Rayados de Monterrey

2020 MLS Cup Odds:

CONCACAF Champions League Bracket:

Biggest Departues:

Nacho Piatti from Impact to San Lorenzo
ZLATAN from LA Galaxy to AC Milan
Wayne Rooney from DC to Derby County
Brian Fernández from Portland to jail (I think)
Nico Gaitán from Chicago to Ligue 1 side Lille

NEW Players (w/summaries just for 72o):

Chicharito to LA Galaxy (age: 31) - needs no introduction. All time leader for El Tri (México) w/51 goals. Broke in w/Man Utd, notching 3 straight 10+ goal seasons, more recently bagged 16 goals in 55 matches for Westham, and comes to LAG from Sevilla.

Claudio Pizarro to Inter Miami (age: 25) - another fairly important piece for El Tri where he has 23 caps. Comes from los Rayados where he's already won a few titles in only a couple seasons. Although probably not a top 3 player for Monterrey, they'll be glad to part with him for the 20 million price tag Inter Miami agreed to pay. When he's on he's very good, but he's also very inconsistent. Should dominate in MLS though imo.

Jürgen Locadia to Cincinnati (age: 26) - IMO, the most interesting signing. Notable in that he's the only player in the top 8 most valuable MLS players who doesn't play in LA or ATL. I'm still not sure how Cincy pulled this off. Big time goalscorer w/45 in 127 matches for PSV Eindhoven. He's be a golden boot frontrunner if he played for a better team.

Mauricio Pereyra to Orlando (age: 29) - Uruguayan attacking mid comes from Russian side Krasnodar w/23 goals in 154 appearances. Caps w/Uruguay's U20s but never made an appearance for the nat'l team.

Alan Pulido to Sporting KC (age: 28) - The Mexican isn't really in the nat'l team picture anymore, but is coming off a great season for Mexican giants Chivas where he finished as joint golden boot winner.

Robert Beric to Chicago (age: 28) - 25 caps with Slovenia and comes from Ligue 1 side Sainte-Étienne w/a pretty solid goal scoring record, 26 goals in 81 matches over 5 seasons.

Lucas Zelarayán to Columbus Crew (age: 27) - The Argentine attacking midfielder has been a key player for Liga MX's best side in recent years, Tigres, with 113 appearances and 21 goals over 5 seasons.

Edison Flores to DC United (age: 25) - Yet another player from Liga MX. The Peruvian winger has been a stalwart for their national team with 13 goals in 47 appearances and was a regular for Morelia over the past 2 seasons.

Felipe Mora to Portland (age: 26) - Wildly inconsistent, but can bang in goals when he's on. Comes from Liga MX's Pumas.

Lucas Cavallini to Puebla (age: 27) - Has been great for Canada w/11 goals in only 17 apps. Another player from Liga MX (Puebla) w/ a very respectable 29 goals in 75 matches for a Liga MX bottom feeder side that doesn't score often.

Luis Binks to MONTRÉAL (age: 19) - Comes from Tottenham's academy thanks to Thierry Henry's connections. Supposedly Tottenham's 2nd best young CB.

Intra-league Moves:

DARWIN from Minnesota to Houston
Walker Zimmerman from LAFC to Nashville
Wil Trapp from Columbus to Inter Miami
Katai from Chicago to LAG
Nagbe from ATL to Columbus
Gressel from ATL to DCU
Romell Quioto from Houston to IMFC

puskas award nominee from last night:

big to pick up b2b wins going into the break

Beautiful goal

been a lot of embarrassing performances this season but philly may have just taken the cake.

messi-less mia gets 2 red cards and scores the game winner with 9 men vs 11.

So I went to Red Bull v. Toronto on Saturday.

My dad (who isn't a soccer fan) and 6 year old niece were up from North Carolina and came with my wife and 2 year old son.

On 9 minutes they stop the game for "storms in the area". Skies were clear, there was no rain. They made people leave their seats and pack the concourses in 98 degree heat. It was "fireworks night" so there were tons of families with small kids there (the stadium was still half full)

For 2 hours they had people crammed in the concourses with no visible lightning or fain. About 1:45 in there were some lightning very very off the distance with low rumbling thunder following after close to a minute.

In short, there was absolutely no reason to stop the game. By time the game resumed the game could have been finished.

I get lightning is a threat but they were way way way way too overcautious in this situation.

By comparison, Yankee Stadium, which was sold out and closer to the storm than RB Arena was able to finish their game uninterrupted. They were in the bottom of the 8th inning when Red Bull resumed.

Just an absolutely atrocious job by Red Bull or MLS (I'm guessing it's the latter bc I see delays all the time on tv, but this was the first one I experienced in person. Hopefully they're not all as unnecessary is this). It makes me never want to go to a game ever again, especially if there is even the smallest hint of weather in there.,

Add to this zero communication from Red Bull how long the delay was expected to last or when they expected to start. Kids lying in the middle of the concourse, families with small children sweating their asses off.

We eventually left after an hour and 15 minutes. That parking lot is a **** show so we sat in that traffic for an hour and 15 minutes. We weren't the only ones who packed it in having traveled 2 hours and waited another hour + to see 9 minutes of football under dry skies with zero lightning in sight.

LOL MLS

I saw that game was delayed on Saturday (I needed NYRB to complete a parlay) and just figured a massive summer storm sprung up over the stadium.

on the positive side, at least the red bulls won

but yes otherwise lol mls.

how on earth is what happened at the end of the ATL/TOR game legal and how on earth could the tor keeper be so stupid?

and with literally no time remaining how was there not one single tor defender paying attention to warn the keeper?

that's just one of the most absurd things I've ever seen.

Play in question at 6:35. Yah, it took so long to develop that it's pretty surprising that no TOR player or anyone else was screaming at the keeper.

brian white confirmed big time back to being the goat oat. showin the usmnt how its done with a hattrick last night, here's the best one

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdYvNTcI...

wild 4-3 game, fun

gyasi zardes wins the game for Austin FC with two 2nd half goals (btw LOL at the nycfc GK....zardes did the same obvious juke on both goals)

maybe GREGG should have had him on the USMNT instead of pepi???

FC Cincinnati - Inter Miami 6:1
Orlando City - DC United 5:0
Columbus Crew - Toronto FC 4:0
Real Salt Lake - Atlanta Utd 5:2

twas goals this week

miami had been doing well without messi.....

didn't even realize that the 1st leg of the canadian cup happened last night

whitecaps squeezed out a 1-0 win @ pacific fc (victoria), while forge fc (hamilton) beat loltfc 2-1. was almost 2-0, but toronto got one back at the end, which sucks. would be pretty funny if forge can hang on there, and vwfc can win a 3rd straight title by only beating cpl teams. then again, forge also beat montreal, would be pretty epic if they won while defeating all 3 canadian mls teams, especially because the final will probably be in front of a big crowd in vancouver

so apparently philly union have the yank messi (cavan sullivan), who just made his pro debut the other day, breaking freddy adu's record for youngest appearance in mls. supposedly he's one of the best young prospects in the world, and comes from quite a footballing family:

His father, Brendan, played for five clubs over a six-year professional career in the A-League. Prior to that, Brendan Sullivan was an All-Ivy selection at University of Pennsylvania and starred at St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia. He then went on to coach at his alma mater. His mother, Heike, played Division I soccer and captained the University of Pennsylvania women's team. Cavan's older brother Quinn was a U.S. youth international who also plays for Philadelphia Union. Two other brothers, twins Declan and Ronan, are also youth soccer players, with both currently attending YSC Academy and playing for MLS NEXT affiliate FC DELCO.

His cousin is Chris Albright, an American international who played two seasons for the Union, and his grandfather is Larry Sullivan, who served as the head coach at Villanova from 1991 to 2007. Sullivan's uncle, Bryan Sullivan, was a Division I goalkeeper at Philadelphia Textile and was also on the coaching staff at Villanova.

the older brother is 20 and has been a meaningful player with the union for a few years now with 82 appearances over 4 seasons since turning pro, and seems to be a regular starter this year. also had 10 goals in 19 games for usa#1 at the u20 level.

his maternal grandfather also has an interesting story:

Klaus Krippendorff (March 21, 1932 – October 10, 2022) was a communication scholar, social science methodologist, and cyberneticist. and was the Gregory Bateson professor for Cybernetics, Language, and Culture at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication. He wrote an influential textbook on content analysis and is the creator of the widely used and eponymous measure of interrater reliability, Krippendorff's alpha. In 1984–1985, he served as the president of the International Communication Association, one of the two largest professional associations for scholars of communication.

whatever any of that means...

anyway yank messi has already been signed by manchester city, but he can't move there until he's 18 years old, and apparently he'll be here in mls at least until he's 16 ... so, go see him live while you can, i guess?:

If he develops rapidly, he can conceivably play in Europe at age 16, but cannot do so in England. In that scenario, continental European clubs that share ownership with Manchester City—Spanish side Girona, Belgian side Lommel, Italian side Palermo, and French side Troyes—would be possible destinations for a loan.

and one last thing:

Sullivan is eligible to represent Germany or the United States.

would be extremely funny if he turned out to be good and then went on to play internationally for germany, i would have a nice chuckle about that one. seems unlikely due to all his connections to usa#1, and how his family is such a fixture in the pennsylvania soccer scene specifically, but who knows. stranger things have happened...

or maybe he'll be an adu-level bust and never amount to much, who's to say

freddy a deux, electric boogaloo

MLS "All Star" Game vs. Liga MX "All Stars" is tomorrow night. Match is in Columbus, OH (no home field advantage for Liga MX is the significance)

3 way betting Line (per Draftkings): MLS -115 / Liga MX +265 / Draw +310

messi and his vampire team mate are out.

MLS -115 has to be the worst betting option, yes? Can any Liga MX experts (*cough* Fossilkid *cough*) explain otherwise?

mls starting lineup quite a bit better imo even without messi and suarez

mls has won the last two as well

my guess is it'll be bet to wait until actual starters are known and how much they'll be playing

dk has steamed towards USA overnight, sharp books have not moved the line

so there's a little value now on backing mexico there but not much

lololololololol MLS biggest embarrassment ever how on earth was this collection of losers favs lmao

ya always good money in fading lolmls

17' Berterame G. (dos Santos J. + Dilrosun J.) [LMX]
17' Cucho Hernandez (Rossi D. + Busquets S.) [MLS]
41' Idrissi O. (Fidalgo A.) [LMX]
68' Brunetta J. (Gustavo Ferrareis + Huerta Valera C. S.) [LMX]
69' Meza M. (Brunetta J. + Deossa N.) [LMX]

think we can all agree this happened because one man was unavailable thru injury

well mls seems to be having the last laugh in leagues cup. liga mx has been getting absolutely annihilated thus far: 1-2-6 in the first 9 matches. even lowly san jose got a win.

mls rules baby!!!

Necaxa had 14 shots on target in a 1-0 shutout loss. I think that might be the most shots I've seen on frame without a goal.

Gonna be hilarious if Leagues Cup is just all MLS teams by the quarterfinals.

Sorry I missed your pregunta above 702, I wouldn't know much anymore about Liga MX anyway, I was only following it closely when I lived in CDMX from 2018 to 2021.

ah, ok. no worries - for some reason I thought you regularly followed liga mx and south american soccer. maybe I'm thinking of liverpool instead.

going into today's matches, liga mx is now 1-3-7 vs. mls with 8 total goals scored. a couple of the games have been like what fossil mentioned above - the mls team was massively outshot but luckboxed a shutout somehow. it's not a hot take that mls defenses are lol bad so I reckon this liga mx goal drought has to be short-term variance.

looking back at 2023 leagues cup, liga mx started off 2-4-4 before going 5-0-2 the next seven matches. maybe they just need a match to ease into the tournament.

didn't even realize that the whitecaps played last night

5' Berhalter S. [VAN]
17' Veselinovic R. (Berhalter S.) [VAN]
----------
88' Kamara K. (Bouanga D.) [LAF]
90+5' Bogusz M. (Martinez D.) [LAF]

nearly choked it away, but won the shootout. lafc, u got berhalter'd lmao

stakes seem clear for the home match vs tijuana:
win = top of the group and unam or monterrey in the knockout round
draw = a ko match vs austin
loss = out

not sheriff home vs a mexican team is better than @austin ..... but hopefully they don't lose lol

edit: ok i see that tijuana suck so vwfc will beat them, and then lose at home to monterrey who are apparently the #1 seed in this thing. final answer

also noticed that loltfc are the lowest ranked team in this tournament lmao

monterrey definitely did not look like a #1 seed last night - they were awful tbh

if vancouver make it out of the group stage, can you please make your avatar jay beagle?
