1. Make actual NBA stars compete in the dunk contest. Players that people actually want to see and can handle the spotlight. Not guys that are going to choke their brains out and constantly miss their dunks. Something like 3 stars + 1 rookie/g-league player.
2. If that's not an option, then just have ever player be an outsider that specializes in dunk contests.

I think it should be Powell but people like the landmaek of making an all-star game. Powell is an all-star in the east and his later improvement is what the award should be all about.

Last 10 winners had an average of +7.9 and the lowest was Randle in 2020 at +4.6

Horrible format for the ASG. Actually don't mind it for the Rising Stars but for the actual games it is terrible. They tried emulating the NHL but there is nothing interesting about it with basketball.

As an NBA fan in Ireland, the kind of fan that has a Dunc’d on prime sub, I have never watched a single second of an All Star game. This gnawing about the All Star game has been going on 20 years. I can see how it was significant in the 80’s and 90’s when it would have featured players you would hear were good but may never be able to see in your TV market. That’s not the world we live in today. You can watch endless amounts of free footage of all players on YouTube, it will never be exciting to see them, there is no mystery anymore about the best player on a small market west coast team.
Bill Simmons was talking about how the 1987 All Star game was a great game, maybe the best. And the last good one was in 2001. You have to be older than 50 to hold such an opinion. We’re locked in a present media cycle where you have a lot of old men moaning about the NBA, feels a bit tired.
I will say stopping games half way through to do presentations seems weird. But none of the analysis is asking whether the NBA is unhappy with it. Much like the focus on tv viewers misses the reality of customers watching from alternative viewing options - the NBA is making lots of money. To really fix the All Star game you’d probably have to know exactly what Silver and the NBA feel about the weekend’s success and objectives.
