It isn't really the defense being crap in isolation, it's massively influenced by the lack of control and ability to progress the ball in midfield that in turn puts pressure on the defense.
That combined with insane inability to create.

The ante-post PL market is very small compared with the weekend markets. The big teams tanking meant overall the bookies cleaned up that season.
